Armstrong DUMAS - Joe C. Armstrong, 85, former longtime resident of Sunray, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 1999. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Sunray Baptist Church at Sunray with the Rev. Philip Hilton of Sunray Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Armstrong was born in the Stewart community, Rusk County, where he had lived since 1941. Two years ago, he moved from Sunray to Pueblo, Colo. He was an operator at Diamond Shamrock and a member and deacon of Sunray Baptist Church. He married Lonnie B. Wheeler in 1940 in Rusk County. She died in 1990. Survivors include a son, Jerry Armstrong of Pueblo; a daughter, Jomyrle Smith of Chama, N.M.; two brothers, Tilden Armstrong of Paducah, and W.B. Armstrong Jr. of Hermleigh; a sister, Jewel Smith of Longview; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to Sunray Baptist Church, P.O. Box 550, Sunray, TX 79086. The family will be at 1003 Avenue R in Sunray. C.B. Watson GRUVER - C.B. "Red" Watson, 77, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 1999. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Gruver Cemetery with the Rev. Jerry Moore officiating. Arrangements were by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mr. Watson was born in Tahoka and lived in Spearman for 52 years. He was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps and a plumber. He married Billie Jean Watson who died in 1952. Survivors include his daughter, Carol Hunter of Houston; a sister, Marie Jennings of Burkburnett; a brother, Jack Key of Amarillo; and two grandchildren. Clifford Beavers DIMMITT - Clifford Beavers, 81, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999. Services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home Ivey Chapel with the Rev. Howard Rhodes, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Castro Memorial Gardens. Mr. Beavers was born in Bowie where he attended schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he lived in Dimmitt for 60 years. Mr. Beavers worked for the Ford dealership as an auto mechanic and for Dimmitt Implement. He was a Baptist and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Lodge No. 8056. Survivors include two daughters, Pam Prince of Midland and Dede Thomas of Paris, Texas; a son, Darrell Beavers of Dallas; a sister, Marzell Powell of Dimmitt; five grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. Faye Davis MEMPHIS - Faye Davis, 87, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Church of Christ in Memphis with Bill Mayes officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Memphis Funeral Home. Mrs. Davis was born in Paradise in Wise County. She was a homemaker and member of the Church of Christ. She married Trilton T. Davis in 1931 at Memphis. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Don Davis of Memphis and Ben Davis of Hammon, Okla.; a daughter, Joy Jouett of Estelline; 10 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and five great-greatgrandchildren. The family will be at 1703 Peachtree in Memphis. Valarie Green FLOYDADA - Valarie Green, 75, died Friday, Aug. 13, 1999. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in First Christian Church with the Rev. Wendell Horn, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Floyd County Memorial Park by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home. Mrs. Green was born in Tahoka and graduated from Tahoka High School. In 1952, she moved to Floydada where she was employed for 19 years at the Co-op as office manager. The Chamber of Commerce awarded Mrs. Green employee of the month. Since 1957, she was a member of First Christian Church of Floydada where she helped with Bible School, was church treasurer, served as a deacon and was on the church board. She married James Starks Green in 1947 at Lubbock. He died in 1977. Survivors include two sons, James Phillip Green and Sam Key Green, both of Floydada; a brother, Ed Bartley of Tahoka; three sisters, Loretta Tekell of Tahoka, Jerine Dorsey of Fort Worth and Illa Stroud of Cross Plains; and six grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. Roy Samuel Brown SILVERTON - Roy Samuel Brown, 88, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Tulia, and the Rev. Randy Mullin, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Silverton Cemetery by MyersLong Funeral Directors of Silverton. Mr. Brown was born in Kennedale. He owned and operated a truck hauling business, farmed, served as county commissioner for Precinct IV, served on the Silverton School Board and owned and operated Silverton Farm store. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Silverton. He married Zollie Mae Bomar in 1933 at Silverton. She died in 1987. Survivors include a son, Dr. Samuel Bomar Brown of Anniston, Ala.; a brother, Richard Lloyd Brown of Roscoe; and two sisters, Doris June Brown Lambert of Fort Worth and Alene Brown Freeman of Dallas. Samantha Shea Alvis PLAINVIEW - Samantha Shea Alvis, infant daughter of Richard and Melissa Alvis, died Friday, August 13, 1999. J.L. Prendergast PANHANDLE - J.L. "Jack" Prendergast, 78, died Saturday, August 14, 1999. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Les Hall officiating. Arrangements are by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Mr. Prendergast was born in Duff, Neb. and moved to Panhandle from Kit Carson, Colo. in 1952. He was a veteran of the Air Force and was a doctor of osteopathy until his retirement in 1985. He was a member of the National and State Osteopathic Associations and was a Methodist. He married Phyllis Clark in 1942 at Yuma, Ariz. Survivors include his wife; two sons, James C. Prendergast of Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and George K. Prendergast of Kerrville; and six grandchildren. Robert Carroll Benson PLAINVIEW - Robert Carroll "Bob" Benson, 53, died Saturday, August 14, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Ninth and Columbia Street Church of Christ with Mike Prather, minister, officiating and Kevin Igo assisting. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Elmwood Cemetery in Abilene by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Benson was born in Merkel, where he attended schools. He received a bachelor's of science degree in agricultural education from Texas A&M University in 1968, graduating with honors. He later did graduate work and served with the Army in Korea. For 28 years, he worked with the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. In 1972, he was named assistant county agent for Hale County and, in 1973, became county agent in Mitchell County. In 1984, he was named Hale County agent. In 1988, he received the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of County Agricultural Agents. In 1994, he received the Texas Superior Service Award from the Texas Agricultural Extension Service. He served as superintendent of the Plainview Stock Show and South Plains Fair in Lubbock and was chairman of the Panhandle Parade of Breeds. Mr. Benson was a member of the Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ. He married Jannie Lou Walker in 1966 at College Station. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kyle Benson of Kernersville, N.C. and Bryan Benson of Plainview; a daughter, Shelia Lewis of Tyler; his mother, Helen Benson of Merkel; a sister, Ann Scott of Merkel; and a granddaughter. Amarillo Catarina Pesina Catarina Pesina, 69, of Amarillo, died Thursday, August 12, 1999. Vigil services will be at 6 p.m. today in Colonial Funeral Chapel, 1010 West Ninth. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Saint Hyacinth's Catholic Church with Pat Carathers officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Pesina was born in Uvalde and moved to Amarillo in 1992 from Hereford. She worked for Outreach Health Services as a home health care giver for 17 years and was a member of St. Hyacinth's Catholic Church. She married Domingo Pesina in 1948 at Littlefield. He died in 1996. Survivors include four sons, Rufus Pesina of Dallas and Domingo Pesina Jr., Martin R. Pesina and Richie Pesina, all of Amarillo; two daughters, Elizabeth Mendoza and Dora Perez, both of Amarillo; a brother, Sefeino De Los Santos of Roswell, N.M.; five sisters, Delfina Pesina, Elida De Los Santos, Guadalupe Flores, Hope Martinez and Olga De Los Santos, all of Hereford; 19 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. New Mexico Alice Lea Mattlock Dunning BROADVIEW, N.M. - Alice Lea Mattlock Dunning, 89, died Saturday, August 14, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church in Grady with the Revs. Bill Birdwell and Gene Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Grady Cemetery by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis. Mrs. Dunning was born in Bell County and moved to Clovis in 1929. She was a farmer and rancher and a member of First United Methodist Church in Grady. She married Clyde "Spin" Dunning in 1929. He died in 1998. Survivors include a son, Sunny Dunning of Grady; a daughter, Minnie Joe Hultman of Clovis; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Oklahoma Wynona Cooper TEXHOMA, Okla. - Wynona Cooper, 47, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Christian Church with Lloyd Mattock officiating. Burial will be in Texhoma Cemetery by Dawson-Welch Funeral Home of Texhoma. Mrs. Cooper was born in Amarillo and moved to Texhoma where she attended schools. She was active in First Christian Church. She married Bill Cooper in 1973 at Texhoma. She was preceded in death by a son, Scott Ray Cooper, in 1997. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Bridget Branham of Dalhart, Texas; her parents, Voicie and George Fritz of Texhoma; two sisters, Yvonne Hass and Barbara Dick, both of Texhoma; two brothers, Lynn Fritz of Eufaula and Donovan Fritz of Amarillo; and a grandson. Roy Edward Gooch GUYMON, Okla. - Roy Edward Gooch, 83, died Friday, August 13, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Bunch-Roberts Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Horace Tyson of Bethel Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery. Mr. Gooch was born near Guthrie and attended school at Deer Creek, graduating in 1936. He moved to Guymon in 1948 and retired as a plant operator for Phillips Petroleum in 1978. He was a charter member of the Texas County Sheriff's Posse and a member of International Order of Oddfellows, Panhandle Sam's Camping Club, and Sunset Lane Baptist Church. He married Clessie Elizabeth "Marie" Tilley in 1939 at Hominy. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jerry Gooch of Guymon; a daughter, Judy Arnn of Broken Arrow; two brothers, Corrbett Gooch Jr. of Kansas and Loyd Gooch of Borger, Texas; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Katherine Scott Lile GUYMON, Okla. - Katherine "Kathy" Scott Lile, 56, died Friday, August 13, 1999. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors. Mrs. Lile was born in Wichita, Kan. and moved to the Oklahoma Panhandle in 1945. She attended schools in Guymon and graduated in 1961. She was a member of Victory Center. She married Dennis Lile in 1988 at Guymon. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Debra Dawn Bowers of Talihina and Kim Lile of Montrose, Colo.; five sons, twins Kent Kirkpatrick and Kelley Kirkpatrick of Keene, Mike Lile and Dane Lile of Vinita and Brent Lile of Booker, Texas; her mother, Clara P. Scott of Guymon; four sisters, Joyce Scott and Peggy Trotter, both of Guymon, Gayle Perkins of Kimball, Neb. and Carol McAdams of Allen, Texas; two brothers, Leonard Ray Scott and Larry Scott, both of Guymon; and 14 grandchildren. Elsewhere Jim Don Polsley HOUSTON - Jim Don "Jimmy" Polsley, 50, formerly of Amarillo, died Thursday, July 22, 1999. Private burial will be at a later date. Cremation was handled by Claire Brothers Funeral Home of Houston. Mr. Polsley was born in Amarillo. He graduated from Amarillo High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Texas Tech University and did graduate work at Rice University. Mr. Polsley had been employed at M.D. Anderson Institute and was a book publisher. He was a chess master and a Baptist. He is survived by his parents, Ray and Avis Polsley of Amarillo. NaDean Arnold BRADY - NaDean Arnold, 82, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999. Services were at 11 a.m. Saturday in Heritage Funeral Home Chapel in Brady. The body was donated to Texas Tech Medical School. Mrs. Arnold was born in Bowie. She was a sales clerk with Miller's for many years and a member of Southside Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Prissy Sorrell of Eden and Janice Rankin of Amarillo; three sisters, Lorena Gholson of Fort Worth, Eloise Mershon of San Angelo and Delores Whitten of Splendora; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Robert L. Chewning Sr. ARLINGTON - Robert L. Chewning Sr., 51, died Thursday, Aug. 12, 1999. Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Funeral Home of White Settlement. Burial was private. Mr. Chewning was born in Childress and lived in the Arlington area for more than 25 years. He was a member of Mensa. He was a former vice-president of Computerized Business Systems, a computer instructor at I.T.T., and an engineering aide for CADCAM Ventures. Survivors include a son, Robert Chewning Jr.; a daughter, Kellie Chewning; his mother and stepfather, LaJuana and E.G. Washer of Amarillo; two sisters, Glenda Hetrick and Paulette Strebeck, both of Amarillo; his grandmother, Foster Bussey of Childress; and a granddaughter. Francis H. Raef CHULA VISTA, Calif. - Francis H. Raef, 82, died Saturday, July 24, 1999. Services were in July at Church of the Most Precious Blood in Chula Vista. Arrangements were by Humphrey Mortuary of Chula Vista. Mr. Raef was born in Texas and worked as a dairyman for 30 years. He was a member of Knights of Columbus and an honorary life member of Assumption Counsel No. 3368. Survivors include his wife, Bernadina Raef; three daughters, Carol Wagoner of Iowa, Veronica Andreoli of Chula Vista and Adelia Otherson of San Diego; a son, Joseph Raef of Imperial Beach; five sisters, Ann Lewter of Oregon, Edith Beckman of Iowa and Ruby Gabel, Pearl Berres and Opal Walterscheid, all of Texas; a brother, Fred Raef of Arkansas; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
