Mrs. Goar was born in DeLeon, Texas, and moved to Estancia in the mid1920s where she taught school She married Robert Keith Goar in 1931. They moved to the Claud community north of Clovis in 1936 where she lived until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband. Survivors include four sons, John Fratus of Amarillo, W. Shade of Houston, Texas, Lane K. of Clovis and Hershel D. of Burleson, Texas; a sister, Ivy Gates of Moab, Utah; a brother, John Sides of Victoria, Texas; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Oklahoma Betty Jo Naumann Winters GUYMON, Okla. - Betty Jo Naumann Winters, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Terry Armstrong, pastor, and the Rev. Jim Maynard, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Homes. Mrs. Winters was born in Protection, Kan. She married Irvin Edward Winters in 1947 at Liberal, Kan. They moved to Guymon in 1957 from Sterling. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and competed in the Senior Olympics at Dunaway Manor. Her husband preceded her in death in 1989. Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Behne and Brenda Noland, both of Guymon; two sons, Irvin L. Winters and Jimmy Joe Winters, both of Guymon; two sisters, Jessie Lawson of Greensburg, Kan., and Mary Windel of Alder, Mont.; two brothers, Carl W. Ashwood GUYMON, Okla. - William H. "Bill" Ashwood, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Henson-Novak Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Elmer Conley of Booker, Texas, officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Fort Gibson National Cemetery at Muskogee, Okla. Mr. Ashwood was born in Muskogee. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He married Frances Mae Schickling in 1958 in Philadelphia. They moved to Guymon in 1978 from Fairview. Mr. Ashwood was a speech and hearing teacher in the Fairview and Guymon schools for many years before retiring. He was a member of the United Church of God. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Janice Ashwood of Guymon and Deidre Danece Ashwood of Weatherford, Texas; a sister, Mary Wozniak of Muskogee; four brothers, Tommy Ashwood, Dick Ashwood, Johnny Ashwood and Jack Ashwood, all of Muskogee; and a granddaughter. Elsewhere Glen Allen Smith ARLINGTON - Glen Allen Smith, 60, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999. Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens at Clovis, N.M., with Jim Prince officiating. Arrangements were by SteedTodd Funeral Home of Clovis. Mr. Smith was born in Vernon, S.D., and lived most of his childhood in Texas. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1955. During his 30-year career, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, seven Air Medals, Meritorious Service Medal, and an Air Force Commendation Medal, plus numerous service awards. After retiring from the Air Force, he was a ground school instructor for American Airlines until his death. He was married to Loretta Jean for 34 years. Survivors include his wife; a son, Mark Allen Smith of Honolulu, Hawaii; a daughter, Kimberly Buchanan of Quantico, Va.; two brothers, Marlon Smith of Nebraska and Rodney Smith of San Diego, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Gladys Workman LUBBOCK - Gladys Workman, 90, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Broadway Church of Christ Chapel with Joe Burks and Bill Starcher officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park by Sanders Funeral Home. Mrs. Workman was born in Sipe Springs and moved to Lubbock in 1923 from Meadow. She was a graduate of Lubbock High School and Draughon's Business College. She retired from the Retail Merchants Association after 30 years of service and then retired as a professional typist in 1995. Mrs. Workman was a member of Broadway Church of Christ and the Couples Class No. 4. She was a charter member of Lubbock Christian University Associates. She married Raleigh W. Workman in 1936 at Lubbock. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984 and by a son, Raleigh W. Workman Jr., in December. Survivors include a sister, Pauline Rogers of Lubbock; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family will be at 407 N. Adams St. Doug Walston Doug Walston, 65, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Dec. 20, 1998. Mr. Walston was born in Vernon. He was a longtime Lubbock resident and had lived in Fritch for four years before moving to Amarillo two months ago. He was a retired dentist with the state of Texas. He was preceded in death by his wife, Darleane Walston, in 1965. Sidwell, 94, of Amarillo, a former Pampa resident, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Presbyterian Church at Pampa with Dr. Edwin Cooley, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Pampa by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mr. Sidwell was born in Monticello, Ky., and was raised in Blacksville, W.Va. He graduated from Blacksville High School in 1921. He attended Davis and Elkins College for one year. He left West Virginia at the age of 17 to begin a career in the oil and gas business, a career that spanned over 75 years. He settled in Oklahoma and spent the next 10 years in Wyoming, Texas and Kansas working for oil equipment supply companies. In 1934, he founded Texwell Corp. for the exploration of oil and natural gas. Oil Well Servicing Co. Inc. was established in 1938, followed by Beacon Supply Co. in 1947. He established La Coma Corp. in 1948 and had extensive gas production in Collingsworth and Wheeler counties. Mr. Sidwell ranched in Collingsworth, Hemphill and Wheeler counties. He was a member and an elder of First Presbyterian Church of Pampa, the Masonic Lodge at Shawnee, Okla., and Khiva Shrine in Amarillo. He served on the executive board of Cal Farley's Boys Ranch for 30 years and was a former member of the board of the Amarillo Children's Home. He served as mayor of Pampa from 1962 to 1963 and served on the Pampa School Board of Trustees. In 1958, Mr. Sidwell was awarded an honorary doctorate degree from Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia. An autobiography of his life "One Man's Journey" was published in 1983. He married Sarah Pauline "Polly" Reid in 1928 at Shawnee, Okla. Survivors include his wife; a son, E.R. "Gene" Sidwell of Amarillo; a daughter, Ann Fatheree of Fair Oaks Ranch; a brother, Bob Sidwell of Pampa; a sister, Edna Emmitt of Hutchinson, Kan.; eight grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. George Edward Hobbs George Edward Hobbs, 74, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard Batson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Hobbs was born in Childress and had lived in Amarillo for 46 years. He was an Army veteran of World War II and received the Purple Heart. He was employed by the Veteran's Administration Hospital in the refrigeration department for 12 years. He was a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society and First Baptist Church. He married Imagean Ruby Grussendorf in 1946 at Childress. Survivors include his wife; a son, Dan E. Hobbs of Amarillo; a sister, Marie Whisler of Vandalia, Mo.; and two granddaughters. The family will receive visitors at 4001 Linda. Clifford Thompson Clifford Thompson, 81, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with the Rev. Allen Norris of Immanuel Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Thompson was born near Deport and moved to Amarillo in 1945 from Clovis, N.M. He was an Army veteran. He worked as a grounds foreman for AISD, retiring in 1981. He married Grace Ezula Scott in 1946. She died in 1985. Survivors include two sons, Ray Edward Thompson and Clifford Wayne Thompson; a daughter, Margaret C. Thompson of Amarillo; a brother, Richard Thompson of Claude; a sister, Merle Huey of Belen, N.M.; and three grandchildren. He later moved to Dallas. He was a construction worker. Survivors include a brother, Lloyd Mayberry of Amarillo; three sisters, Frankie Reese of San Diego, Margie Johnson of Luling and Dorothy Mayberry of Gonzalez. Mrs. Meredith graduated from HardinSimmons University and taught school for several years. Twelve years ago, she moved to Amarillo from Dumas. She was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Dumas. She married Dr. D.W. Meredith in 1942. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Michael D. Meredith and William R. Meredith, both of Amarillo; a sister, Wanda Ehlert of Wichita Falls; and three grandchildren. Dewey May Dewey May, 72, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. May was born in Clarendon and was a longtime Amarillo resident. He was a Navy seaman first class during World War II and the Korean War. In 1991, he retired after 23 years as warehouse supervisor for Affiliated Foods. He married Nola Pinkley in 1945 at Modesto, Calif. She died in 1980. Survivors include two sons, Mike May of Schulenburg and Eric May of Amarillo; two daughters, Beverly Flatt and Debbie Fike, both of Amarillo; two sisters, Betty Stewart of Bedford and Linda Hightower of Lubbock; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Area Fred Haley Tinsley Sr. PAMPA - Fred Haley Tinsley Sr., 81, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the First Christian Church with the Rev. Darrell W. Evans, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery with graveside rites by Pampa Masonic Lodge 966 AF&AM. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Tinsley was born in Gainesville. He graduated from Cadet Pilot Training at Marfa in 1945 and served in the Army Air Corps as a second lieutenant during World War II. He worked for Cabot Corp. for 38 years, retiring as a supervisor in sales. Following his retirement, he was vice president for PUMPCO for 10 years. He was a member of the Pampa Masonic Lodge 966 AF&AM, Lubbock Scottish Rite Consistory, Khiva Temple of the Shrine in Amarillo and the Pampa Shrine Club. He was president of the Top of Texas WBCCI in 1989 and was a member, deacon and elder of First Christian Church. He married Juanita Phy in 1937. They moved to Pampa in 1939. Survivors include his wife; a son, Fred H. Tinsley Jr. of Houma, La.; a daughter, Becky Lynn Tinsley Dossett of San Benito; two brothers, S.A. "Shorty" Tinsley of Keyes, Okla., and Tom Tinsley of Arlington; a sister, Helen Tinsley Crow of Huntington Beach, Calif.; and six grandchildren. Mary Lou Collier FRIONA - Mary Lou Collier, 73, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Calvary Baptist Church in Friona with the Rev. Mrs. Collier was born in Farwell and was a lifetime resident of Parmer County. From 1984 until October, she lived in Kingsland. She was a member of Hoover Valley Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, First Baptist Church of Friona and member and secretary of Hoover Valley Home Owners Association. She married Robert E. "Preach" Collier in 1973 at Clovis, N.M. Her first marriage was to Lester Wilson Harrelson in 1945. She was preceded in death by Mr. Harrelson in 1973 and by a son, Lester Lee Harrelson, in 1974. Survivors include her husband; a son, Leslie Harrelson of Clovis; four sisters, Ogetha Langford of Clovis, Joyce Coffman of Farwell, Chris Pitman of Almagordo, N.M., and Bobbie Widner of Hereford; a stepson, Darrell Collier of Seagraves; a stepdaughter, Rita Richardson of Salt Lake City, Utah; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Qualls was born in Breckenridge and was a graduate of Pampa High School. She was a bookkeeper for Pampa Hardware and a member of Mary Ellen and Harvester Church of Christ. She moved to Amarillo nine years ago. Karl Marcy Gillespie CHILDRESS - Karl Marcy Gillespie, 89, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Childress Cemetery with the Rev. Dennis Boylan officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home. Mr. Gillespie was born in Cottle County and farmed in Cee Vee until 1945 when he moved to Childress. From 1946 until 1992, he was a rural mail carrier at Cee Vee. He married Jessie Smith in 1929 at Childress. Survivors include his wife; a son, Hildie Gillespie of Derby, Kan.; three daughters, Donna Hawkins of Amarillo, Della Henry of Canyon and Odessa Huff of Childress; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Travis Lightfoot FLOYDADA - Travis Lightfoot, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in New Salem Primitive Baptist Church of Floydada with Don Morton, elder of Primitive Baptist Church of Perryton, officiating. Burial will be in Floydada Cemetery by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home of Floydada. Mr. Lightfoot was born in Fluvanna and moved to Floydada in 1917 from Scurry County. He attend Community Center School and graduated from Floydada High School. After 25 years, he retired as parts manager for John Deere in Floydada. After his retirement, Mr. Lightfoot was employed by Walter Davis in construction for 10 years. He was a member and volunteer of Floydada Senior Citizens and attended Primitive Baptist Church. He married Letha Frances Lindley in 1936 at Haskell County. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kenneth Travis Lightfoot of Amarillo and Michael Glenn Lightfoot of Grand Junction, Colo.; a daughter, Nita Jo Carmack of Corsicana; two sisters, Cecille Weathers of Canyon and Gertrude Hollums of Waco; six grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity. Loreta Murrell TULIA - Loreta Murrell, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Rose Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor of First Baptist Church of Tulia, officiating. Arrangements are by Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. Murrell was born in Whiterock where she grew up and graduated from high school. She attended college in Commerce. She moved to Tulia in 1937 where she was a homemaker and worked for Anthony's for two years. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She married J.B. "Slim" Murrell in 1932 at Greenville. He died n 1977. Survivors include three children, Jeff Murrell of Amarillo, Delia Lynn Langston of Plainview and Paul Murrell of Tulia; a sister, Amy Carter of Greenville; two brothers, W.B. O'Pry and Robert Lee O'Pry, both of Greenville; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Max Garrett TULIA - Max Garrett, 70, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Graveside services will be at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in Albany Cemetery in Albany by Wallace Funeral Home of Tulia. Mr. Garrett was born in Abilene and grew up in Dublin where he graduated from high school. He attended Tarleton State University where he played basketball. He graduated from Texas Tech University where he was a member of ROTC, Delta Sigma Phi business fraternity and was past president of Arnold Air Society. From 1953 until 1955, he served in the Air Force. After his discharge, Mr. Garrett was associated with International Harvester then was general manager for Finger Motor Co. in Borger. He was assistant administrator of the hospital in Borger before moving to Tulia in 1975 where he retired in 1993 as administrator of Swisher Memorial Hospital. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Tulia. He married Jo Alice Harmon in 1947 at Corsicana. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Karen Alice Garrett of Amarillo and Julie Kay Fairchild of Dallas; a son, John Harmon Garrett of Leonard; and three granddaughters. Cremation and arrangements are by FreemanAbell Funeral Home of Hale Center. Mr. Ward was born in Venus and raised in the Children's Home of Lubbock. In 1958, he moved to Hale Center. He graduated from Estacado Trade School and was employed by the Hickory Inn in Lubbock and later by Furrs Cafeteria. He was a member of Hale Center Church of Christ.
