Hughes St. Mrs. Mathis was born in Stanford. She attended Carver High School in Amarillo. She married Adolphus Mathis in 1959. Survivors include a son, Adolphus Mathis Jr.; two daughters, Sandra Mathis and Sherry Mathis; her mother, Tracy Mae Oliver of Amarillo; six sisters, Margaret Jones, Linda Williams and Helen Kay Oliver, all of Amarillo, Dorothy James of Dallas, Lynette Bonner of San Lando, Calif., and Frances Taylor of Tucson, Ariz.; five brothers, James Williams of Phoenix, Robert Johns of Pueblo, Colo., J.C. Oliver Jr. of Chicago and Raymond Johns of Houston and Everett Oliver of Austin; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Henry D. Gregory Henry D. Gregory, 80, of Amarillo, and a former Memphis, Texas, resident, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd., Pioneer Chapel. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Fairview Cemetery at Memphis, with the Rev. O.K. Bowen of First Baptist Church of Memphis officiating. Mr. Gregory was born in Dublin. He attended Tarleton State University and Oklahoma State University. He served as 18th District Commander of the American Legion from 1982 to 1984. By the time he was elected district commander, he had held most elected positions in his home post, 175 at Memphis, which he joined immediately after World War II. He served five years' active duty in the Army during World War II, 39 months in the South Pacific as member of the 25th Infantry Division. He was a medic and experienced combat in the Northern Solomons, the Philippines, and on Guadalcanal, where he was injured. After the war, he left active duty as a staff sergeant but was recalled during the Berlin crisis in 1962 to serve with the 49th Armored Division at Fort Polk, La. After more years of both reserve and National Guard duty, he retired from the Army Reserve in 1967 with the rank of master sergeant. His military awards and decorations include the Purple Heart, the Philippines Liberation Medal with one bronze star and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with four bronze stars. He also was active in the Memphis Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge and Baptist church. He retired after 43 years of federal civil service with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service. He was living in Amarillo at the time of his death. He married Margaret Stevens in 1941 at Hillsboro. She died in 1993. Survivors include two sons, Gary Gregory of Rio Hondo, and Charles Gregory of Amarillo; a daughter, Ann Goodson of Amarillo; a brother, W.D. "Buck" Gregory of Stephenville; a sister, Helen Tackett of Copperas Cove; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson. The family will be at 5107 S. Austin St. Art Wimsatt Art Wimsatt, 64, a former Amarillo resident, died Saturday, March 13, 1999, at Midland. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Llano Cemetery with Tom Monroe officiating. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Wimsatt was born in Los Angeles and moved to Amarillo more than 35 years ago. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He had worked for Herzfeld Beauty Supply of Amarillo as the warehouse supervisor for 15 years. He moved to Midland in 1997 and worked for Stewart and Stevenson as a warehouse leadman. He married Linda Penn in 1963 at Tucumcari, N.M. She died in 1991. Survivors include a daughter, Lynette Bolton of Midland; a son, Tom Wimsatt of Amarillo; a sister, Margaret Reardon of Las Vegas, Nev.; two brothers, George Wimsatt of Mesa, Ariz., and Jack Wimsatt of Midland; and two grandchildren. The family will be at 1619 N. Marrs St. Ethel Combs Ethel Combs, 90, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Park Funeral Home, Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Combs was born in Sherman and previously lived in Seminole, Okla. A longtime Amarillo resident, she retired from the laundry room at Pantex. She married Roy Combs at Holdenville, Okla. Survivors include a daughter Norma Jean Cuttrell of Stinnett; two brothers, Esmel Rannals of Paris and Desmel Rannals of Honey Grove; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Vera Marie Bassett Vera Marie Bassett, 76, of Amarillo, died Monday, March 15, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., with the Rev. Alan Ford, pastor of Southwest Baptist Church, officiating. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Waco Memorial Park in Waco. Mrs. Bassett was born in Newlin. She graduated from Ouachita Baptist University with a major in elementary education and then taught second grade at Glenwood, Oakdale and Bible Heritage Christian schools. She also taught at schools in Waco until her retirement. Mrs. Bassett wrote several books, including "Wendy the School Turtle" which was co-authored by Jan Walters. An amateur photographer, she had several photos appear in local papers. After her husband's death, she returned to Amarillo and came out of retirement to teach at Bible Heritage Christian School. A member of Southwest Baptist Church, Mrs. Bassett participated in mission projects in Mexico and Indonesia. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Leonard R. Bassett, in 1982. Survivors include four daughters, Mitzie Pyle of Marble Falls, Gaynell Weaver of Phoenix, Renee Tankersly of Pearcy, Ark., and Rosalinda Tovar of Waco; a son, Randy Bassett of Tucson; a brother, A.J. Mrs. Lloyd was born in Plevna, Kan., and was raised in Winfield, Kan. She graduated from high school in 1946 at Winfield. She married Harold Oliver Lloyd in 1946 at Winfield. They moved to Guymon in 1956 from Abilene, Texas. She was a Baptist church member and attended the Church of Christ. She was a homemaker and an active member of the Mothers and Daughters Home Extension group and had served as Texas County Fair Superintendent for 30 years. Survivors include her husband; three children, Harold W. Lloyd, Pamela Jean Powell Lloyd and Larry Gene Lloyd, all of Guymon; a brother, Jamie Marker of Escondida, Calif.; two sisters, Sarah Daughertry of Fullerton, Calif., and Patty Newland of Grants Pass, Ore.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Vera Lawanda Lamm SAYRE, Okla. - Vera Lawanda Lamm, 86, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Rose Chapel with Tom Cooksey and Ray Smart officiating. Burial will be in Erick Cemetery. Mrs. Lamm was born in Sayre and grew up in the Mayfield community where she attended school. After her marriage, she moved to the Lamm family farm north of Erick and then moved to Sayre in 1950. She moved to Perryton, Texas, in 1991. She married Elbert Harvey "Jack" Lamm in 1928 at Sayre. She was preceded in death by her husband and two sons, Jackie Jr. in 1928 and Bobby Joe in 1974. Survivors include two daughters, Joy Barker of Dimmitt, Texas, and Donna Aven of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; two sons, Jackie Lamm of Perryton and Gary Lamm of Beggs; six grandchildren; and 19 greatgrandchildren. New Mexico Faye Leadean Horton ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Faye Leadean Horton, 72, died Saturday, March 13, 1999. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery at Pampa. Mrs. Horton was born in Seminole, Okla. He married Ora Loranzo Horton in 1942 at Seminole. She was an Army wife and in her early married years, lived in various places throughout the United States. She moved to El Cajon, Calif., in 1948 and worked as a bookkeeper for an automobile agency, retiring in 1989. She moved to Albuquerque in 1989 and worked for Strickley Southwestern Lighting and Furniture. She was a Baptist. Survivors include her husband; a son, Travis Loren Horton of Jamul, Calif.; a daughter, Eunice Karen Shultz of Los Padillas, N.M.; four brothers, Robert Thomas of El Cajon, Wayne DeLoach of Albuquerque, Jerry DeLoach of Oakridge, Ore., and Larry DeLoach of Crestwell, Ore.; a sister, Betty DeLoach of El Paso, Texas; six grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren. She married Corky Godfrey in 1983 at Pampa. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS McFarland and VD5 Squadron. Both received Presidential Citations. He was a longtime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9022 of Dumas. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tonja Jean Shumow in 1994. She retired from a ladies clothing store and was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Hereford. She married Dr. B.J. "Doc" Weaver in 1946 at Clovis. The family will be at 815 East Park Ave. Dessie Mae Steele McCracken HEREFORD - Dessie Mae Steele McCracken, 95, of Wichita, Kan., died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery by Gililland-Watson Funeral Home. Mrs. McCracken was born in Groom and moved to Hereford in 1923. She attended West Texas State College and went to California to study piano. On her return to Texas, she attended Southern Methodist University. She taught piano for many years. With her husband, Mrs. McCracken was instrumental in founding Kings Manor/Westgate in Hereford. She was a member of Hereford Music Club, Eastern Star, Hereford Senior Citizens and First United Methodist Church where she served as choir director. She was named Lions Club Sweetheart. She married J.C. McCracken in 1931 at Hereford. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993 and by a son, John Martin "Jack" McCracken, in 1980. Mr. Oles was born in Arenac County, Mich., and attended schools in Arenac and Bay City, Mich. He moved to Armstrong County in 1931 and worked on ranches in Mills, N.M., and Goodnight. Mr. Oles served as Armstrong County Commissioner and was pivotal in the creation and building of the Armstrong County Community Center. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Claude. He married Marguerite Waggoner in 1940 at Clarendon. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lea Margaret Clements of Columbia, S.C., and Shirley Anne Dalluge of Tulia; a son, James R. Oles of Claude; a sister, Albina Lindsey of Flint, Mich.; a half-sister, Sophie Zimmer of Flint; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family will be at 303 Hermosa. They suggest memorials be to a favorite charity. Ollie Y. Ellison CHILDRESS - Ollie Y. Ellison, 95, died Monday, March 15, 1999. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Childress Cemetery with Bill Mayes of Childress Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Mr. Ellison was born in Upshur County. He was employed as a barber by the Chrysler Corp. In 1921, he married Ruth, who died in 1986. There are no known survivors. Bill Goff PLAINVIEW - Bill Goff, 59, died Friday, March 12, 1999. Cremation and arrangements were by Lemons Funeral Home. Mr. Goff was raised and attended schools in Sparta, Wis. At age 16, he started driving trucks and became a long haul truck driver. In 1978, he moved to Omaha, Neb., followed by moves to Anderson, Ind., in 1980, Amarillo in 1992 and Plainview in 1993. He married Mittie Hembree in 1992 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Celeste Smith of Plainview; his mother, Leona Goff of Sparta; a brother, James Goff of Sparta; three sisters, Carol Laxton, Dawn Kruks and Sandi Wegner, all of Sparta; and a grandchild. Emmie Loraine Allen PLAINVIEW - Emmie Loraine Allen, 83, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Neil Unwin of the First Assembly of God and Roger Foote of Northside Baptist officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Aspermont. Mrs. Allen was born in Fannin County and was raised in Aspermont where she lived until after her marriage. In 1944, she moved to Lockney followed by a move to Plainview in 1953. Since 1980, she had lived in the Windwood Apartments. She married Cecil Clyde Allen in 1931 at Aspermont. He died in 1979. Survivors include seven daughters, Alice Loraine Morgan of Caldwell, Idaho, Martha Jane Martin of Middleton, Idaho, Alma Nell Shugart of Soper, Okla., Ruth Ann Rushin and Bonnie Lou Voyles, both of Plainview, Jeanette Barker of Muldrow, Okla., and Cathy Sue Sellers of Henderson; five sons, Lee Clyde Allen and Melvin Lynn Allen, both of Plainview, Dee Glenn Allen of Kress, Stevy Jay Allen of Idabell, Okla., and Ricky Dean Allen of Wichita Falls; a sister, Oramay Patton of Weatherford; 31 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Anglin was born in Hall County and attended Memphis High School in Memphis. An Army veteran of Korea, he was a member of the 101st Airborne. Mr. Anglin was employed as a truck driver by Cudd Bros. Trucking and John Holton. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Glynn Moore Post No. 6439 and attended the Primitive Baptist Church. He married Ferna Royal in 1954 at Memphis. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Dody Roy Anglin. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Lynn Anglin of Amarillo and Cody Anglin and Mickey Anglin, both of Wellington; two brothers, Lanton Anglin of Memphis and Charles Anglinj of Philadelphia; and 11 grandchildren. Born in Wellington, Mr. Peeples graduated from Samnorwood High School in 1950. A lifelong resident of Collingsworth County, he retired after more than 40 years of farming. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Wellington. Survivors include two brothers, Rex Peeples of Darrouzett and E.B. Peeples of Wellington; and three sisters, Lola Estes of Wellington and Mona Mellott and Estelle Gregory, both of Springfield, Ore. Elsewhere Virginia Toler Wood ARLINGTON - Virginia Toler Wood, 91, a former Amarillo resident, died Monday, Jan. 4, 1999. Burial was in Greenwood Memorial Park at Fort Worth by Greenwood Funeral Home of Fort Worth. Mrs. Wood was born in Kansas, and moved to Arlington in 1988 from Amarillo, where she had lived about 45 years. While living in Amarillo, she was active in the Opti-Mrs. Club, the Telephone Company Pioneer Wives and had been the leader of Girl Scout Troop 50 for many years. She and Robert E. "Bob" Wood had been married over 50 years. He died in 1994. Survivors include two sons, Robert E. Wood Jr. of Dallas and Thomas F. Wood of Bisbee, Ariz.; a daughter, Nancy Hurt of Arlington; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson. Nicky Jesse Savage FORT WORTH - Nicky Jesse Savage, 56, a former Amarillo resident, died Wednesday, March 10, 1999. Mr. Savage was born in Clovis, N.M. He was a plumber. Bill Strickland officiating. Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Llano Cemetery in Amarillo. Mrs. Elliott was born in Kansas City, Kan. She grew up in Canyon where she graduated from high school. After her marriage, she lived in La Cross, Kan., and later on the old Elliott place near Hale Center. She moved to Midland in 1993. She married Sam L. Elliott in 1928. He preceded her in death. Survivors include a sister, Louise Leveritt of Midland, and other relatives. Blaylock DENVER, Colo. - Clay R. Blaylock, 70, died Sunday, March 14, 1999. Memorial services will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Newcomer Family Mortuary Chapel in Lakewood. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery in Sedalia, Mo. Mr. Blaylock was born and raised near Sedalia, Mo., where he went to school. He entered the Air Force in 1951 and joined Central Airlines, now Frontier Airlines, in 1957 when he moved to Denver. In 1986, he retired from Frontier and became regional sales manager for Scheduled Airlines Traffic Offices. While employed by Sato Travel, Mr. Blaylock became director of corporate communications, general manager, chief executive officer and chairman of the board in the corporate office in Arlington, Va. He retired in 1992. Mr. Blaylock served as chairman of the Air Traffic Conference Military and Government Traffic Committee and member of National Defense Transportation Association, National Passenger Traffic Association, American Society of Association Executives and National Industrial Recreation Association. He served on the Denver Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee. Mr. Blaylock was a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church of Amarillo and the Littleton Elks BPOE No. 1650. Survivors include a daughter, Lisa K. Blaylock of Denver; three sons, Ronald D. of Amarillo, Donald G. of Hallandale, Fla., and Randall J. of Aurora; two brothers, T. Jack and Don L., both of Columbia, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, P.O.
