Ethan was born and raised in Pampa. Survivors include his parents; a sister, Miranda Davis of the home; his grandparents, Robert Anderson of Las Vegas, Benito Chavez and Donna Anderson, both of Pampa, and Irma Alexander of Paducah; and his great-grandfather, Alvin King of Pampa. The family suggests memorials be to Northwest Texas Hospital Pediatric ICU at Amarillo. Bertha E. Taylor CHILDRESS - Bertha E. Taylor, 95, of San Antonio, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Johnson Funeral Home of Childress with the Rev. Lemmy Pike of Assembly of God Church officiating. Burial will be at Childress Cemetery. Mrs. Taylor was born in Harmon County and moved to Childress in 1915. She moved to San Antonio in 1972. She married William "Mack" Taylor in 1925 at Childress. Survivors include a daughter, Gwen Fisher of San Antonio; a son, Michie Taylor of Odessa; a sister, Tressie Guynes of Dallas; a brother, Arthur Newberry of Dallas; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Raymond Lassen CHILDRESS - Raymond Lassen, 80, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Johnson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ivan Allen of First United Methodist Church of Childress officiating. Private burial will be in Childress Cemetery. Mr. Lassen was born in Childress and served as staff sergeant in the Army during World War II. For 43 years, he was employed as a machinist by BurlingtonNorthern Railroad. He was a member of Childress Masonic Lodge No. 695 AF&AM, chapter council and commandry. He married Ernestine Rickman in 1946 at Childress. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jimmy Lee Lassen and David Glen Lassen, both of Longview, and Donald Ray Lassen of Plano; and four grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Childress Hospice or Meals on Wheels. Ruth Fite CHILDRESS - Ruth Fite, 68, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim McCurley of the church and the Rev. Alan Egerton of Bible Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Carey Cemetery in Carey by Johnson Funeral Home of Childress. Miss Fite was born in Frio County and was a quadriplegic since the age of 16 due to a car accident. She was owner and operator of a telephone answering service and a member of First Baptist Church. She also did telephoning for clubs, churches and civic organizations. Survivors include a sister, Fannie Coyne of El Paso, and two brothers, Horace W. Fite of Ceres Golas and Ross David Fite of Comitan Chiapas. Wanda Hitt DARROUZETT - Wanda Hitt, 60, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church in Darrouzett with the Rev. Gary McDonald officiating. Burial will be at Darrouzett Cemetery by Good Samaritan Funeral Service of Booker. Mrs. Hitt was born in Claremore, Okla., and grew up in Big Lake. She graduated from high school in Borger in 1957. She was employed as a sales clerk in various department stores in Borger until her marriage. In 1969, Mrs. Hitt moved to Darrouzett. She was a member of the Church of Christ and past member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She married Haskel Hitt in 1958. Survivors include her husband; a son, Michael Dean Hitt of Jackson, Miss.; a daughter, Rhonda Howard of Amarillo; and six grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Darrouzett or a favorite charity. George Slovacek BOOKER - George Slovacek, 91, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Booker Christian Church with Chuck Lightfoot and Jim O'Banion officiating. Burial will be in Sophia Cemetery by Good Samaritan Funeral Service. Mr. Slovacek was born in Rouchovany, Czechoslovakia, and moved to Booker when he was 6 months old. He attended Liberty Country School. In 1973, he retired after 23 years with the Beaver County Highway Department. He was a farmer and a member of Booker Christian Church. He married Prudence Dye in Beaver. He was preceded in death by his wife and by a son, LeRoy. Survivors include a son, Marvin Slovacek of Booker; three stepdaughters, Delores Islas of Oklahoma City, Alverna Hill of Amarillo and Anna Lois Gordanier of New Mexico; two sisters, Sophia Henton and Hattie Cates, both of Booker; 26 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Amarillo Lawrence W. Hellmann Lawrence W. Hellmann, 88, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999, at Panhandle. Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., by the Rev. Raymond Crosier of St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church by the Rev. Crosier and the Rev. Ken Keller. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Hellmann was born in Umbarger and moved to Amarillo in 1945 from Hereford. He had been a dispatcher with Santa Fe Railway, retiring in 1977 after 50 years. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic Church. He married Mary Louise Kearns in 1942 in Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a son, Steven Hellmann of Grand Prairie; a daughter, Helene Smith of Houston; a brother, Francis M. Hellmann of San Mateo, Calif.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family requests memorials be to a favorite charity or St. Anne's Nursing Home at Panhandle. Virginia Christine Foster Virginia Christine Foster, 82, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Robert Slaton, superintendent of the West Texas District Assemblies of God Church and the Rev. Stan Fortenberry, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Foster was born in Tulsa County, Okla. She was a life member and supporter of the Assembly of God Church. She married Raymond C. Cooper in 1935. He died in 1970. She married the Rev. E.R. Foster in 1974. He died in 1990. She also was preceded in death by two stepsons, E. Ralph Foster and David D. Foster. Survivors include two sons, Larry Cooper of Amarillo and Daniel Cooper of Corpus Christi; a brother, Joe Daniel of Amarillo; two sisters, Violet Bellis of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Rosa Lee Hirsch of Nashville, Tenn.; two stepsons, Galen Foster and Darrell Foster, both of Amarillo; four grandchildren of the Cooper family; 13 grandchildren of the Foster family; 29 great-grandchildren of the Foster family; and five great-great-grandchildren of the Foster family. Ernest Shaw Ernest "Slim" Shaw, 78, of Amarillo, died Monday, March 15, 1999. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Funeral Home, Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40 with the Rev. Robert Field officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Shaw was born in Arkansas. During World War II, he served in the Navy on the USS Reed and USS Harringer. He moved to Amarillo in 1950. He married Frances Rhody in 1946 at Clovis, N.M. Survivors include his wife; a son, Jim Shaw of San Diego; a brother, Bill Shaw of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Jettie of Childress; a grandchild; and a greatgrandchild. Lillian Norris Riney Lillian Norris Riney of Amarillo, 94, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, Ivy Chapel, 2820 Virginia Circle. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Riney was born in Eldorado, Ark., and moved to Hamlin in 1908. In 1923, she graduated from Hamlin High School and then attended Texas Woman's University in Denton and Hardin Simmons College in Abilene. Mrs. Riney lived in Panhandle and then Clarendon before moving to Amarillo in 1953. She was active in her church, Parents-Teachers Organization and was an Avon representative for more than 30 years. She married Will A. Riney Jr., in 1933 at Abilene. Survivors include two daughters, Willetta March of Amarillo and Frances Knight of Denton; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. VanNoy Marjorie H. VanNoy, 89, of Arlington and a former Amarillo resident, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St. Mrs. VanNoy was born in Franklin, Mass., and moved to Amarillo in 1951 from New York. A graduate of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, she was a nurse with the Air Force. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She married C. Frank VanNoy in 1946. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1998 and by a son, Terry VanNoy, this year. Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Cox of Arlington; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the Alzheimer's Association Panhandle Chapter or the American Heart Association. New Mexico Charlie W. Miller CLOVIS, N.M. - Charlie W. Miller, 77, died Saturday, March 13, 1999. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Mission Garden of Memories with Robert Forss and Frank Phillips officiating. Arrangements are by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mr. Miller was born in Ada, Okla. He married Mildred Geraline Burns in 1940 at Clovis. They moved to California shortly after their marriage. He worked as a boilermaker/layout in a cement-manufacturing company. He returned to Clovis in 1986. He was a member of Masonic Ashlar Lodge 306 AF&AM at Colton, Calif. He was preceded in death by his wife and a daughter, Janice Miller. Survivors include three children, Charles G. Miller of Portland, Ore., William Eugene Miller of Conroe, Texas, and Robert Paul Miller of Crescent City, Calif.; a brother, Russell Miller of Farmington; and 14 grandchildren. Oklahoma Madeline Harland TEXHOMA, Okla. - Madeline Harland, 91, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Church of Christ in Texhoma with Jim Cauldwell of Tulsa and Fred Riley officiating. Burial will be in Texhoma Cemetery by Dawson-Welch Funeral Home. Mrs. Harland was born near Texhoma. In 1924, she graduated as class valedictorian of Texhoma High School. She attended Panhandle State University and taught fourth grade in Texhoma. Mrs. Harland assisted her husband farming, was a member of the Oklahoma Homemakers Club and was active in the Church of Christ her family helped establish in the early 1900s. For many years, she taught ladies' and children's Bible classes and taught via correspondence African students in the World Bible Study Program. For more than six years, Mrs. Harland lived in Gruver where she was a member of the Church of Christ and Golden Agers Club. She married Otto August Harland in 1927 at her home. He died in 1975. Survivors include five children, Elene Green of Gruver, Texas, Joyce Chisum of Dalhart, Texas, Paul Harland of Texhoma, Mary Beth Blake of Yukon and Judy Morgan of Fritch, Texas; a brother, Carl Muller of Tulsa; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cline was born in Honey Grove. She was a former member of the Gruver Methodist Church and was a dietitian for the Gruver public schools for 30 years. She married Floyd Cline in Amarillo. He died in 1976. She also was preceded in death by a son, Larry Lee Cline. Survivors include two brothers, Cecil Shelton of Vidor and Derl Tucker of Sherman; a sister, Betty Sandridge of Tulsa, Okla.; and two grandchildren. "Bill" Carey, 72, died Friday, March 12, 1999, in Amarillo. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Bella Vista Community Church, 75 East Lancashire, Bella Vista, with the Rev. David McKay officiating. Arrangements are by Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Ark. Mr. Carey was born in White Deer, Texas. He graduated from White Deer High School in 1943 and attended college at John Tarleton University and West Texas State University. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Northern Natural Gas Co. after working more than 32 years and moved to Bella Vista in 1984. He married Alice Bonner in 1956. She died in 1993. Survivors include a son, Mark Carey of Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Carmen Garcia of Odessa, Texas; a brother, Marion Carey of Hobbs, N.M.; two sisters, Wilda Fay Anderson of Amarillo and Maxine Milligan of Dallas, Texas; and two grandchildren. Simon F. Mirabel HILL CITY, Minn. - Simon F. Mirabel, 35, died Monday, March 15, 1999. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Hill City Baptist Church with the Rev. Lonnie Lee officiating. Burial will be in Shovel Lake Cemetery by Sorenson-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin. Mr. Mirabel was born in Tucumcari, N.M., where he attended elementary school until he moved to Hill City. In 1981, he graduated from Hill City High School and then enlisted in the Army and served until 1984. He had lived in Fountain, Colo., Lubbock, Texas, and Dallas. In 1988, Mr. Mirabel returned to Hill City. He was employed as a carpenter by Morton Buildings and was a member of Hill City Baptist Church. He married Ann Marie McNeil in 1982 at Swatara. Survivors include his wife; three children, Jacob Mirabel, Kendra Mirabel and Hannah Mirabel, all of Hill City; his parents, Henry and Mary Mirabel of Amarillo; five brothers, Henry Mirabel of Lubbock, Eddie Mirabel and Richard Mirabel, both of Albuquerque, N.M., Jimmy Mirabel of Amarillo and Jerry Mirabel of Alamogordo, N.M.; and five sisters, Louisa Dolly, Carol Mirabel, Yolanda Apadaco and MaryEllen Mirabel, all of Amarillo, and Sylvia Valdaquez of Portales, N.M. The family will receive friends from noon until service time Friday at the church.
