Jeffrey PAMPA - James E. Jeffrey, 78, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Mary Ellen & Harvester Church of Christ with Glen Walton, minister of North Amarillo Church of Christ and Tim Walker, minister, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Jeffrey was born in Bearden, Okla., and was raised in the Boles Children's Home with the Church of Christ. He moved to Pampa in 1970. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He graduated from Southern Methodist University Law School and was in private practice until 1970 when he began working for the Cabot Corp. He was a member of the Optimist Club and was a past president of the board of directors of the Genesis House. He also was a member of the Mary Ellen & Harvester Church of Christ where he taught Sunday school for several years. He married Dorothy Jean Wharton in 1958 at Abilene. He was preceded in death by two sons, James Robert Jeffrey in 1977 and Thomas Hardy Jeffrey in 1987. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Ann Marie Thompson of Pampa; a sister, Polly Warner of Plano; and two grandchildren. The family requests memorials be to The Boles Children's Home in Quinlan. Tommy Dean Elliff TULIA - Tommy Dean Elliff, 60, a former resident of Tulia, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in Rockwall. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Wallace Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home. Mr. Elliff was born in Rotan and moved to Tulia when he was a boy. While in Tulia, he attended schools, worked at the Mid-Plains Body Shop and served in the National Guard and the Army Reserves. In 1982 he moved to Rockwall, where he owned and operated the Carousel Collision Center and was a member of the First Baptist Church. He married Regina Geraldine Wiess, his former wife, in 1963. Survivors include a daughter, Stacy Hansen of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; a son, Kent Elliff of Lucas; a half brother, H. Don Elliff of Midlothian; a half sister, Joyce Deal of Midlothian; and three grandchildren. Dorothy Kay Gray TURKEY - Dorothy Kay Gray, 56, of Navasota, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999. Mrs. Gray was born in Garnet, Kan. and moved to Texas 25 years ago. She married Don Gray in 1979 at Houston. Survivors include her husband; a son, Doug Terry of Lewisburg, Kan.; a daughter, Shala Graeve of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Joan Howard of Splendora; two brothers, James Kenneth Dykes of Olathe, Kan. and Howard Dykes of Joplin, Mo.; and six grandchildren. Amarillo Lee Roy Lowrance Lee Roy Lowrance, 85, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Georgia St. Mr. Lowrance was born in Corsicana and raised around the Roaring Springs area. He moved to Amarillo in 1942 and worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a conductor for more than 50 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Trainmen and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge. He also was a member of the First Baptist Church. He married Lillian Pauline Allen in 1935 at Roaring Springs. She died in 1998. Survivors include two sons, John Allen Lowrance of Cimarron, N.M., and Garre Don Lowrance of Amarillo; four sisters, Bertha Gunter and Elsie Fitzgerald, both of Amarillo, Louise Horton of Midland and Doris June Dellamonica of Fort Lee, N.J.; six brothers, Aubrey Lowrance and Cliff Lowrance, both of Amarillo, Billy Joe Lowrance of Ridgeway, Colo., Doyle Lowrance and J.N. Mr. Beal was born Utpica, Okla., and had lived in the Amarillo and Houston areas. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery at Panhandle by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mrs. Smith was born in Howe. In 1939, she moved to Panhandle, where she was a member of the Erudite Club. In 1963, she moved to Amarillo, where she was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and the Gleaners Sunday school class. From 1985 until 1987 she served as president of High Plains Baptist Hospital Auxiliary, where she was a volunteer. She married J.P. Smith in 1938 at Claude. Survivors include her husband; two sons, John Phillip Smith Jr. of Panhandle and George William "Bill" Smith of Amarillo; a brother, George Knox Carnes of Corpus Christi; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Pico, 77, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Bell Ave. Chapel, 5400 Bell St. Burial will be in Memory Gardens. Mrs. Pico was born in Canton, Ohio and moved to Amarillo in 1984 from Mobile, Ala. She was a professional wrestler and instrumental in starting women in the profession 61 years ago. Her professional name was Ann Lavern. Mrs. Pico was a Catholic. She married Robert L. Pico in 1950 at Florida. He died in 1989. Survivors include a son, Bobby Pico of Amarillo; two daughters, Mary Nelson and Roberta DeLeon, both of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. The family suggests memorials be to Olivia's Angels. Canyon Zina Corene Vaughan Zina Corene "Corky" Huguley Vaughan, 74, of Canyon, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in the First Baptist Church of Olton with the Rev. Kyle Streun, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Halfway Cemetery at Halfway. Arrangements are by Holley Funeral Home Inc. of Canyon. Mrs. Vaughan was born in Maryfield in Hale County. She was a member of Canyon Christian Church. She had worked in the nursing field most of her life. She worked at Amhurst Co-op Hospital at Littlefield and in a doctor's office at Clovis, N.M. Survivors include a son, Dan Vaughan of Canyon; two sisters, Thelma Kersh of Olton and Ola Curry of Clovis; three brothers, A.G. Huguley of Olton, Marvin Huguley of Clovis and Don Huguley of Olton; and six grandchildren. Coy Wheeler Coy Wheeler, 83, of Canyon, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Primitive Baptist Church at Amarillo with Don R. Watson and R.A. Tindall officiating. He served with the Army during both World War II and the Korean War and retired from the Army as a Master Sargent. He married Opal in 1946 at Montgomery County, Tenn. He is survived by his wife. New Mexico Alma Ward TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Alma Ward, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in Dunn Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Elder Wayne Venable of Clovis and the Rev. Cliff Miller of Logan, N.M., officiating. Burial will be in the family plot of the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Ward was born in Post, Texas, and had lived in Tucumcari since 1922. In Tucumcari, she attended schools, was a school bus driver for the Tucumcari Public School System and, with her family, owned and operated the Ward Sand and Gravel Co. She was a member of Primitive Baptist Church and was active in the Tabosa Extension Club. Survivors include a son, Wayne Ward of Ruidoso; two daughters, Doris Ward of Albuquerque and Evelyn Mayfield of Lucadia, Calif.; a sister, Ruth Miller of Tucumcari; a brother, Bill Tatum of New Kirk; six grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, in 1977 and two sons, Jerry Ward and Art Ward. The body will be available for viewing until service time at Dunn Memorial Chapel. Garner Sorge TUCUMCARI, N.M. - Garner Sorger, 97, a former longtime Tucumcari resident, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999, in Mineola, Texas. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Immanuel Baptist Church in Tucumcari with the Rev. Herb Roever, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the family plot of the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery. Arrangements are by Dunn Funeral Home. Mr. Sorge was born in Winnsboro, Texas, and was a longtime resident of Tucumcari before moving to Mineola several years ago. In Tucumcari, he was the owner and operator of the Morning Glory Grocery Store for many years, and was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge AF&AM Post 27. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Mae, and by a son, Joe H. Sorge. Survivors include his wife, Fay; a son, Jack Sorge of Mill Creek, Wash.; a brother, Bruce Sorge of Orange, Texas; two sisters, Buna Rogers and Ruby Caldwell, both of Winnsboro, Texas; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. The body will be available for viewing at Dunn Funeral Home from Monday evening until services time Tuesday at the church. Oklahoma Lucille M. McCubbin TULSA, Okla. - Lucille M. McCubbin, 78, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 1999. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today in St. Mary's Chapel. Arrangements are by Ninde Funeral Directors Garden Chapel. Mrs. McCubbin was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a longtime volunteer for St. Francis Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Welnack of Naperville, Ill.; two sons, Bill McCubbin and James McCubbin, both of Amarillo; a sister, Jean Patterson of Texas; and four grandchildren.
