Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Copeland was born in Claude. She moved to Borger in 1926 from Amarillo and ran a grocery business with her husband. She returned to Amarillo in 1951. She was a unit clerk at Northwest Texas Hospital. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She married George Copeland in 1922 at Panhandle. He died in 1972. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathleen Copeland, in 1925; and by a son, George Copeland Jr., in 1956. Survivors include a daughter, Frances C. Smith of Amarillo; a sister, Ruby Harris of Portales, N.M.; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and 11 greatgreat-grandchildren. A retired truck driver, he had worked for ABF Trucking. He had lived in Las Cruces for two years. Mr. Shields was born in Raton. He graduated from Clayton High School at Clayton in 1963. He also was a graduate of West Texas State University at Canyon. He had been a truck driver for Northern Mountain Contractors of Taos. He is survived by Donald L. "Donnie" Shields of Clayton. Visitation will be all day today at the funeral home. Amarillo Daily News, May 5, 2000 James C. Sowers CLAYTON, N.M. - James C. Sowers, 97, died Thursday, May 4, 2000. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hass Funeral Home with the Rev. Andy Husted, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Mr. Sowers was born in Cherokee Indian Nation. In 1924, he graduated from Clayton High School. He was a railroader and a carpenter and had lived in Albuquerque and Raton from 1937 to 1944. He lived in Hurley until 1995 and spent the winters at Mesa from 1970 to 1991. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge since 1935. He married Dorothy Robinson in 1987 at Mesa, Ariz. She died in 1996. He also was preceded in death by a wife, Sigrid Southerland Sowers, in 1986. He is survived by nieces and nephews, including David and Joyce Sowers. Burial will be at 3 p.m. today in Rose Hill Cemetery at Tulia by White Funeral Home. Mrs. Dillahunty was born in Swisher County. She attended school in Tulia and Canyon and was part of Tulia's championship women's basketball team in 1920. While in Canyon, she was the women's champion tennis player of 1921. She moved to Lockney in 1946 from Tulia and to Lubbock in 1994. She had taught school in Swisher County and was a homemaker. She was a member of Westside Church of Christ in Lockney. She married L.A. "Berry" Hooten in 1926 at Tulia. He died in 1951. She later married Voy Dillahunty. He died in 1968. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Gwendolyn Hooten, in 1936; and by a son, John L. Hooten, in 1987. Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn Mattison of Lubbock and Joyce Churchwell of Plainview; two sisters, Hazel B. Ford of Hereford and Merelene Buford of Dallas; 14 grandchildren; 35 greatgrandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. "Bud" Ellison, 83, died Thursday, April 20, 2000. Services were at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 24, in the Monnie Springs Assembly of God with the Rev. Walter Fowler and the Rev. Bennie Stickley officiating. Burial was in the Kennerly Cemetery by Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth Funeral Home of Little Rock. Mr. Ellison was born in Houston, Ark. During World War II, he served in the Navy. He worked for Pulaski County as a mechanic until his retirement in 1982. Services are 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Monte Wike officiating. Burial will be in East Mound Cemetery by Seigler Funeral Home. Mr. Cox was born in White Flat. He had worked harvesting wheat and in oil fields, while living in the Texas and Oklahoma area. He also had worked for the Matador Ranch. Mr. Cox lived in Blue Springs, Mo. for 15 years before moving to Grain Valley six years ago. He had owned and operated a prosthetic business at Blue Springs. He made braces and prosthesis for Kansas University Medical Center until he retired. He was a member of the Duncan Road Baptist Church at Blue Springs. Survivors include a son, David Cox of Pierce City, Mo.; two daughters, Deanna Coleman and Adena Holloway, both of Cassville, Mo.; a stepson, Jeff Davis of Grain Valley, Mo.; a sister, Dorothy Russell of Matador; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. During World War II, he served in the Army. He lived in Hooks before moving to Childress, where he was a longtime resident. He worked for Childress Lone Star Gas, retiring in 1974. He moved to Quanah four years ago. He was a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion in Childress, and had been a volunteer fireman. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He married Nila Richardson in 1938 at Hollis, Okla. Survivors include his wife; a son, Joe Owen of Hewitt; and two grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the Goodlett Cemetery. Amarillo Daily News, May 5, 2000 Billy Joe Stevens PAMPA - Billy Joe Stevens, 72, died Tuesday, May 2, 2000. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Memory Gardens Cemetery with the Rev. Todd Dyess, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Stevens was born in Memphis. During World War II, he served as a sergeant in the 4th Air Depot Supply Squadron of the Army Air Corps. He received military honors before his discharge in 1947. He served as chief of police in Winters from 1962 to 1975. He worked as a pipe fitter and was a member of the Pipe Fitters Union. Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Suit of Fritch; four sons, Rodney Stevens of Muldrow, Okla., Randy Stevens of Midland and Ronnie Stevens and Roger Stevens, both of San Angelo; two sisters, Wanda Hutchison of Arvada, Colo., and Linda Rainey of Amarillo; a brother, Gayle N. Amarillo Daily News, May 5, 2000 Terry Moore PANHANDLE - Terry Clarence Moore, 32, died Wednesday, May 3, 2000. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Perkins, pastor, and the Rev. Max Bowlin, pastor of First Baptist Church of Springfield, Colo., officiating. Burial will be in the Panhandle Cemetery. Arrangements are by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors. Mr. Moore was born in Lamar, Colo., and graduated from Springfield High School at Springfield. He married Suzy Ferguson in 1987 at Pampa. They lived in Springfield before moving to Alamosa, Colo., to attend Adams State College, where he graduated in 1996. He also studied at West Texas State University. He was a sportscaster at KSLV Radio in Monte Vista, Colo., and then worked for the Valley Courier newspaper in Alamosa. He moved to Panhandle in 1995. Mr. Moore began his career at the Amarillo Globe-News as a part-time sports clerk in 1996. He later worked as a sportswriter and outdoors writer before moving to the regional news department as a staff writer. In July 1998, he learned he had lung cancer. A few weeks after the diagnosis, Mr. Moore wrote the first of a series of columns detailing his day-to-day struggle with the disease. In April, he won first place in the Class AAA division for General Column Writing at the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors annual meeting. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ben Moore and Brett Moore; his father, Bill Moore of Cassville, Mo.; his stepmother, Edna Moore of Cassville; three sisters, Barbara Bills of Iowa and Glenna Claunch and Sandra Mullins, both of Springfield. Mrs. Vaughan was born in Hollis, Okla. She was a Baptist. She married Elmer Vaughan in 1925 and they moved to the Haylake Community in Briscoe County. He died in 1953. She also was preceded in death by a son, Denzil Vaughan, in 1983. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Pace, in 1979.
