Harrington BORGER - Merle F. "Jelly" Harrington, 85, died Thursday, June 1, 2000. Services were at 11 a.m. Monday in Wesley United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Floyd-Harp, pastor, officiating. Burial was in Westlawn Cemetery by Brown Funeral Directors. Mr. Harrington was born in Newton, Kan., and had lived in Borger 74 years. He retired as an electrician for Fish Construction. He was a Methodist. He married Alice Louise Miller in 1939 at Phillips. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Merle Harrington Jr. of Arlington and Robin Harrington and Clyde Harrington, both of Borger; a daughter, Mary Klein of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; a brother, Claude Harrington of Houston; 10 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors. Mrs. Williams was born in Calera, Okla., and had lived in Borger since 1945. She was a homemaker and a member of Bunavista Baptist Church. She married Gene Williams in 1942 at Durant, Okla. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Ronald Gene Williams of Roanoke and Terry Dale Williams of Ridgeland, Miss.; a daughter, Sandi Coffey Wells of Ridgeland; a brother, Bill J. Ferguson of Blanco; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery by White Funeral Home of Lubbock. Mrs. Thomas was born in Paducah. She graduated from Brock High School. She lived in White Deer and Wheeler before moving in 1978 to McLean, where she lived 22 years. She moved to Idalou in May. She was a substitute teacher and librarian and editor of the McLean News. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, McLean Meals on Wheels and First United Methodist Church. She married Dorman Willard Thomas in 1944 in Tarrant County. He died in 1988. Survivors include a son, Buddy Thomas of Spearman; three daughters, Sandy Clark of Pampa, Debby Beaty of Idalou and Donna Payne of Lubbock; her mother, Velma Kindard of Lubbock; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and member of First United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She volunteered at the Square House Museum and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Erudite Fine Arts Club and a past member of the PTA. She married Elten Vance in 1935 at Oklahoma. Survivors include her husband; a son, Don Vance of Panhandle; two daughters, Carolyn Hedrick of Panhandle and Joyce Cockrell of Fritch; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She graduated from Friona High School in 1962 and attended West Texas State University in 1963. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church and the Rebekah Lodge. She was a member of the Clovis Women's Bowling League. She married C.B. Eddins in 1963 at Friona. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Belinda Anthony and Katie Parker, both of Friona; a brother, Roscoe W. Parr Jr. of Nolanville; and five grandchildren. Mr. Fortin was born in Highland Park, Mich., and graduated from St. James High School at Highland Park in 1941. During World War II he served with the 12th Defense Battalion, First Marine Division. In 1945 he played with the Chicago White Sox farm team and in 1946 signed with the St. Louis Browns. He was traded to the Pampa Oilers and moved to Pampa in 1946. He attended Texas Tech University at Lubbock for three years. He coached Little League baseball teams and was a charter member of Pampa Optimist Club. In 1990 he retired from ECI of Amarillo as plant manager. He was a Catholic. He married Vernell Bynum in 1948 at Pampa. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Mike Fortin and Gary Fortin, both of Amarillo and David Fortin of Lakin, Kan.; a daughter, Debbie Davis of Pampa; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of the Nazarene. She married Grady Haddock in 1933 at Shamrock. He died in 1953. She married Elmer Winters in 1960 at Pampa. He died in 1968. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Janelle Wood, in 1964. Survivors include a son, Eddy Haddock of Amarillo; two daughters, Rose Heard and Saundra Sutton, both of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren; and her friend and care giver, Roena Merriss of Amarillo. He worked as a maintenance foreman for Southwestern Public Service Co., retiring in 1985. He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church and the DAV Chapter No. 26. He married Billie Ruth Gruver in 1946 at Torrance. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Ken R. Johnson and Jerry D. Johnson, both of Amarillo and John V. He graduated from Amarillo High School and earned an associate degree from Texas State Technical College. He served in the Army and the Navy. He was self-employed in the trucking business and a process server in Houston for a number of years. He was also in the farming and ranching business. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Sonja Ray Grimes in 1991 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Joseph Smith Jr. and Teri Smith, both of Houston and Joel Smith of Pueblo, Colo.; three daughters, Sherry Cortez of Fort Worth; Darla Stern of San Bernardino, Calif.; and Beckie Black of Brownwood; two stepsons, Rick Grimes and Tim Grimes, both of Amarillo; his father, B.M. Smith of Columbus, Ohio; two sisters, Melva Dene Roach of Columbus and Velva Gene Jeppson of Logan, Utah; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
