Nesbitt Norman P. Nesbitt, 73, of Amarillo, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Nesbitt was born in Reading, Mass. He moved to California at age 6. He joined the Navy in 1943 and served until 1946. He moved to Amarillo in 1948 from California and worked for Santa Fe Railway, retiring in 1986 as a conductor. He was a Scottish Rite Mason and a member of San Jacinto Masonic Lodge No. 1330 and Khiva Temple. He also was a member of the United Transportation Union and First Baptist Church. Mr. Nesbitt married Joyce Beauchamp in 1962 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jeanette Hill of Rogers, Ark., and Debbie Wolf and Amy Hughes, both of Amarillo; a son, Joe Burks of Amarillo; a sister, Muriel McDowel of Torrance, Calif.; three brothers, Carl Nesbitt of Conyers, Ga., Bob Nesbitt of Hesperia, Calif., and Dick Nesbitt of Torrance; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to the American Cancer Society. The family will be at 6503 Palacio. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 Harriet Parsley Harriet "Polly" Parsley, 95, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Travis, pastor of Family Life Fellowship, officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell Ave. Mrs. Parsley was born in Hill County and moved to Amarillo in 1942 from Clarendon. She was a homemaker and member of Family Life Fellowship. She married Robert B. Parsley in 1946. He died in 1961. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Beth Clower. Survivors include four daughters, Brownie Jester, Roma Harris and Lavonda Slaughter, all of Amarillo, and Barbara Johnson of Tucumcari, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-great-grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 Ladonna Jeane Dreyer Ladonna Jeane Dreyer of Amarillo, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Funeral Home, Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with Dr. Howard Batson of First Baptist Church and Dr. Gene Byrd, vice-president of Amarillo College, officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum North. Mrs. Dreyer was born in Hutchinson, Kan. In 1979, she resigned her professorship in Oklahoma City and returned to Amarillo where she was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Dreyer was a teacher and was published by the Educational Research Institute of Chicago. She also authored a textbook. She was a life member of NEA, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Kappa Delta Pi. She married Robert H. Dreyer in 1969 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a stepdaughter, Tracy Lee Campbell of Oklahoma City; a stepson, Michael Dreyer of Midland; two sisters, DeEtta Depew of Missouri and Glennis Smith of Florida; and a brother, Dennis Chase, of Louisiana. The family suggests memorials be to Amarillo College Foundation or a favorite charity. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 New Mexico Stella M. May CLOVIS, N.M. - Stella M. May, 81, died Saturday, March 4, 2000. Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Church of God with the Rev. Tim Hillier of the church officiating. Burial will be in the Portales Cemetery at Portales by Steed-Todd Funeral Home. Mrs. May was born in Portales and was a lifetime resident of the Portales and Clovis area. She worked as a presser for Clovis Steam Laundry and then was a foster parent for mentally-handicapped young adults. In later years, she provided day care for infants and young children. She was a charter member of Clovis Church of God. She married Sam W. May in 1951 at Clovis. He died in 1975. Survivors include a brother, K.P. Jaquess of Portales; a sister, Laura Loflin of Clovis; two stepbrothers, Richard Stelzig of Virginia and Bill Stelzig of Kentucky; and three stepsisters, Sally Rogers of Mississippi, Betty Cumpton of Texico and Agnes Ford of Fort Sumner. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 Oklahoma Jim Matthews TEXOLA, Okla. - Jim Matthews, 57, died Saturday, March 4, 2000. Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Texola Baptist Church with Charlie Floyd officiating. Burial was in Texola Cemetery by Fatheree-Albert Funeral Home of Erick. Mr. Matthews was born in Houston and grew up in Clute, Texas. In 1978, he moved to Texola where he was a self-employed entrepreneur. He married Linda Wilkinson in 1994 at Lake Tahoe, Nev. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Judith Elaine Matthews, and a son, Douglas James Matthews. Survivors include his wife; a son, Joel Matthews of Canfield, Ohio; a daughter, Casey Eberle of Durango, Colo.; and four grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 Evelyn Carol Cowan BALKO, Okla. - Evelyn Carol Cowan, 59, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Balko Baptist Church with Evelyn Stone and Joe Day officiating. Burial will be in Bethany Cemetery by Clark Funeral Service of Beaver. Mrs. Cowan was born in Liberal, Kan., where she graduated from high school. She received her certification from a two-year college to became a registered nurse. Mrs. Cowan worked as a nurse prior to becoming a homemaker. She was a member of the Gray Community Church, the Boyd Home Demonstration Club, past leader of the Balko 4-H and a Balko FFA Mom from 1986 until 1994. She married F. DeWayne Cowan in 1967 at Perryton. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Byron Cowan of Cleveland, Texas and Daron Cowan of Ulysses, Kan.; and a grandson. Wright, 75, formerly of Borger, died Sunday, March 5, 2000. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Burks-Walker-Tippit Chapel with Bill Goble, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Williams Cemetery at Tyler. Mr. Wright was born in Trinity County. He lived in Borger, Palestine and Houston before moving to Tyler 20 years ago. During World War II, he served in the 29th Tactical Air Command and participated in several battles, including the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He received the French Croix de Guerre and other honors. Mr. Wright was a manager for Western & Southern Insurance Co. and was named among "Who's Who of Texas" in 1973-74. He was a member of Tyler Christian Church. He was a past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1789 in Borger. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Nina Rebecca Wright Jones. Survivors include his wife, Sara Rebecca "Becky" Wright; a son, Herman Howard Wright II of Borger; a daughter, Donna Wright Russell of Tyler; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 Dr. Robert E. Holland LUBBOCK - Dr. Robert E. Holland, 82, died Monday, March 6, 2000. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Resthaven Funeral Home Abbey Chapel with the Rev. Paul Cunningham officiating. Additional services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Presbyterian Church in Lincoln, Neb. Burial will be in Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln by Roper and Sons Funeral Home of Lincoln. Dr. Holland was born in North Platte, Neb., and graduated from high school in Lincoln in 1935. He completed his undergraduate studies and earned his medical degree from the University of Nebraska. His residency in psychiatry was completed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Houston. Dr. Holland also completed a course in medical administration at the Veterans Hospital in Topeka, Kan. He maintained a private practice in Grand Island, Neb. He then was employed by the Veterans Administration at hospitals in Waco, Northampton, Mass., Chillicothe, Ohio, Leavenworth, Kan., and Lubbock in 1976. During World War II, Dr. Holland served in the Army, with a rank as major. At his retirement, Dr. Holland was acting director of the Veterans Administration clinic in Lubbock and assistant director of the Veterans Hospital in Amarillo. He was a member of Rotary International in Lubbock, adjunct professor at Texas Tech University, and a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He married Viola "Vi" Elizabeth Doughtery in 1945 at Wheatley, Oxford County, England. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Ellsworth Holland III of Lubbock and Richard Scott Holland of Lincoln; two daughters, Joan Marie Holland and Patricia Ann Holland, both of Chapel Hill, S.C.; two brothers, Kenneth Holland of Lincoln and David Bruce Holland of Prairie Village, Kan.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to service Friday at the funeral home. They suggest memorials be to the American Diabetes Association. Willie Lee Majors and Alton Graves, elder, officiating. Burial will be in City of Levelland Cemetery. Mr. Hall was born in Franklin and was a long-time Levelland resident. He was a farmer. He married Ethel Mae Reed in 1971 at Levelland. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Jo Ann Hall, in 1968. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Holy Family Catholic Church with the Rev. Pete Otto officiating. Burial will be in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery by Foskey-Lilley-McGill Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Mrs. Hindman was born and raised in Nazareth and attended school there. After her marriage, she moved to Borger. She returned to Nazareth in 1947. She was a homemaker and a member of the Senior Citizens, Holy Family Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and Catholic Daughters. She married Lew V. Hindman in 1938 at Nazareth. He died in 1966. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Smith of Aurora, Colo.; a brother, Clarence Schulte of Nazareth; a sister, Theresa Wills of Groom; and a grandson. The family suggests memorials be to the Nazareth Museum or Holy Family Cemetery. Viewing continues at the funeral home until 8:30 a.m. today then will be at the church from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. today. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 Clarence Upton PAMPA - Clarence Upton, 85, died Tuesday, March 7, 2000. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors Colonial Chapel with Paul Nachtigall, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Mr. Upton was born in Hart, Okla., and was an Army veteran of World War II. He worked at a grain elevator in Memphis then moved to Pampa in 1947. Mr. Upton was a custodian for the Pampa Independent School District and U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1657. In 1992, he moved to Moore, Okla., then returned to Pampa in 1994. He moved to McLean in 1995 and returned to Pampa in 1998. He married Edna Cox in 1968 at Pampa. She preceded him in death. Survivors include three sisters, Dorothy Searl, Drucilla Totty and Imogene Adams, all of Pampa. Mrs. Anderson was born in Aledo, Okla., and moved to Perryton four years ago from Cheyenne, Okla. She was a homemaker and member of the Methodist Church in Cheyenne. Her first marriage was in 1923 to A.J. Trollinger who died in 1931. She married Gilbert Anderson in 1976 at Cheyenne. He died in 1996. Survivors include two daughters, Yvonne Rogers of Perryton and Beth Revis of Panhandle; a brother, Buford Seago of Stillwater, Okla.; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. He died in 1972. Survivors include two sons, Lupe Castillo and Danny Castillo, both of Hereford; three daughters, Belinda DeLeon of Houston and Dalia Hernandez and Selma Castillo, both of Hereford; a brother, Segundo Bosquez of Hereford; four sisters, Elva Marry of Hereford, Olga Bolado of Houston, Ofelia Maldonado of Fort Collins, Colo., and Josefina Robles of Lamar, Colo.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Leonard Forsythe, pastor of Bible Baptist Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Brown Funeral Directors. Mr. Gourley was born in Jerktail, Mo., and was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired as a welder and artist and moved to Tucson six years ago. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Harold Allan Ross, in 1999. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; two sons, Billy Gourley and Bobby Gourley, both of Tucson; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Randy Chelf of Tyler and Bruce Chelf of Brenham; a daughter, Jan Mozingo of Tyler; a sister, Juanita Bell of Fritch; four grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. Mr. Martinez was born and raised in Hereford where he attended schools. He was a cement finisher. He was a member of La Iglesia de San Jose. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Ann Martinez of San Diego; six brothers, Joe I. Garcia of Amarillo, Herminio Garcia of Roswell, N.M., Hilario Garcia, Telesfor Garcia, Johnny Amaro and Peter Amaro, all of Hereford; four sisters, Daisy Garcia and Anita Amaro, both of Hereford, Adelina Lucero of Villa Nueva, N.M., and Celia Flores; and three grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 William H. Brownlee SPEARMAN - William H. Brownlee, 76, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today in First United Methodist Church in Spearman. Cremation was by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mr. Brownlee was a longtime Spearman resident and a retired farm laborer. There are no known survivors. Amarillo Daily News, March 9, 2000 Horace G. Hunter QUITAQUE - Horace G. Hunter, 97, died Wednesday, March 8, 2000. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church in Flomot with the Rev. Nathan Mulder, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Flomot Cemetery by Myers-Long Funeral Directors of Quitaque. Mr. Hunter was born in Howard County, Ark., and moved to the Turkey area in 1923. From 1961 until 1971, he owned and operated a cotton gin in Flomot. He also managed the Quitaque Coop Gin during which he built a new gin and delinting plant. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Flomot and the Quitaque Masonic Lodge. He married Adeline Young in 1919 at Howard County. She died in 1990.
