Gunter Lorene O. Gunter, 81, of Amarillo, died Monday, Jan. 10, 2000. Miss Gunter was born in Shamrock and was a longtime resident of Amarillo. She was a switchboard operator for the Amarillo's Veterans Affairs Health Care System. She later transferred to Oklahoma City to work in government communications, retiring in 1981. Miss Gunter was a member of Coulter Road Baptist Church. Survivors include a sister, Callie Combest of Amarillo; a brother, Uil Gunter of Olton; and a special friend, May Tippin of Amarillo. Mr. Alewine moved to Amarillo in 1970 from South Carolina. In 1992, he retired as a maintenance man from Flavorland Beef. He married Ruth Ball in 1967 at Memphis. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Loretta Holtzapple and Linda Hinkel, both of Amarillo, and Kathy Riddlehotter of Raleigh, N.C.; three sons, Charles and Ronnie Alewine, both of South Carolina, and James Gann of Amarillo; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Two years ago, she moved to Houston. She married Nestor Padilla in 1957 at New Mexico. He died in 1982. A retired accountant, he served as comptroller for Ramsey Kantz in Orange and H.B. Heild in Beaumont. He was active in Cub Scouts and held offices at St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Mr. Russell was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church and the Audubon Society. During World War II, he was a captain and a tank commander in the Army. He received the Gold Star for service in the European theater where he fought at the Battle of the Bulge. He married Virginia Russell in 1991 at Houston. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie Lea Baird, in 1985; and by a daughter, Sharon Kay Baird, in 1953. Mr. Zimmer was born in Dalhart and was a lifetime resident of the Stratford area where he farmed and ranched. He also farmed and ranched in Colorado and Turkey, then had a water well service in Sherman County. From 1964 until 1972, he served as Sherman county commissioner in Precinct No. 1. He was considered the mayor of Zimmerville. Mr. Zimmer was honored as the 1999 Stratford Jamboree Old Timer King. He was a supporter of the Stratford Fair, Jamboree and Barbecue. He also supported and furnished beef for the Multiple Sclerosis Beef-A-Thon. He was a member of Dumas Masonic Lodge, the Elks Lodge, was a Shriner and a 4-H sponsor and leader. He married Elizabeth Ellen Brandt in 1946 at Dalhart. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Andrea Zimmer of Stratford; two sons, Bill Zimmer of Stratford and Bob Zimmer of Gruver; two sisters, Willienell Haynes of Amarillo and Fern Bellah of Canyon; six grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Mr. Wooldridge was born in Hardesty and graduated from Hardesty High School in 1947. He had worked for Langston Buick and later became a partner in the business. He then worked for the Guymon public school system as a bus mechanic, retiring in 1993. Mr. Wooldridge was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, where he served as an usher and Sunday school teacher. He married Mary Louise Young in 1949 at Clayton, N.M. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Gayle Godwin of Lincoln, Neb., and Crystal Caddell of Guymon; a son, Bryan Wooldridge of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Olene Overton of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Yvonne Ralstin of Guymon; and nine grandchildren. She moved to Anadarko from Childress in 1968. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Olen Dee Gudgel, and by her second husband, Alonzo L. Pittman. Survivors include four sons, Bonny Edward Gudgel of Elizabethtown, Ky., John Allen Gudgel and Paul F. Pittman, both of Anadarko, and Larry D. Gudgel of Beaver Creek, Ohio; four brothers, Robert L. Banks, Joseph L. Banks, Jerry Don Banks and J.B. Banks, all of Lubbock, Texas; a sister, Vernie Wright of Amarillo; a half-brother, Roy Hondashell of Childress; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, Jan. 13, 2000 L. Dean Rentfro PURCELL, Okla. - L. Dean "Corky" Rentfro, 70, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000. Mass of Christian burial was at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with the Rev. Ross officiating. Arrangements were by Yoakum-Damet Funeral Home of Purcell. Mr. Rentfro was born in Dalhart, Texas and served with the Navy during World War II. In 1991, he retired as cable foreman from GTE. He then moved to his ranch in Seymore. Mr. Rentfro was a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. He moved to Purcell last year. He married Charlotte Schumacher in 1963 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Tressa Maden Cornett of Norman; two sons, Trigg Rentfro of Amarillo and Scott Rentfro of Norman; his mother, Bonnie Rentfro of Hickory Creek, Texas; and a sister, Judy K. Rentfro of Hickory Creek; and a granddaughter. Amarillo Daily News, Jan. 13, 2000 Elsewhere James Abbott Applegate MIDLAND - James Abbott Applegate, 78, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Christ Episcopal Church at Burlington, Iowa, with the Rev. Patrick Genereux officiating. Burial was in Aspen Grove Cemetery at Burlington by Prugh Funeral Service of Burlington. Mr. Applegate was born in Burlington. He was an Army veteran of Wold War II. He retired as an electrical engineer at Pantex. He was a classic-car collector and a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He married Mary C. Hart in 1966 at Burlington. She died in 1988. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Cearley, of Midland. The family suggests memorials be to the Salvation Army. Amarillo Daily News, Jan. 13, 2000 Minerva Hobart Batts FORT WORTH - Minerva Hobart "Tiny" Batts died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000. Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Trinity Episcopal Church followed by a private burial. Arrangements are by Martin Thompson Funeral Home of Grapevine. Mrs. Batts was born in Canadian of Panhandle pioneer parents. She attended school at Ashley Hall in Charleston, S.C., and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Raleigh, N.C. She pledged Pi Beta Phi at the University of Arizona then graduated from the University of Texas in 1952. She moved to Fort Worth in 1953. In 1979, Mrs. Batts was named Altrusa Club First Lady. She was an administrative assistant for community relations with Texas Utilities from 1973 until 1992 and founder and executive director of Leadership Fort Worth from 1972 until 1994. Mrs. Batts was a recipient of the United Way Hercules Award. She served as president of the Fort Worth Symphony and Fort Worth Junior League, was on the board of directors and executive committee of Circle T Girl Scouts, chairman of the Fort Worth Conservation Council and first vice-president for Tarrant County branch of the American Association of University Women. A member of the Assembly and Jewel Charity Ball, Mrs. Batts also did volunteer work for the Child Study Center, Fort Worth Zoo, Mayfest and Juvenile Probation Department. Survivors include three children, Stuart Hobart Batts of Fort Worth, Robert Lynn Batts of Richmond and Mary Batts Estrada of Austin; a brother, Timothy Dwight Hobart of Pampa; a sister, Marilyn Hobart Campbell of Wichita Falls; and three grandchildren. The family will receive friends after the services at the Rivercrest Country Club.
