He lived in Lefors for 55 years before moving to North Richland Hills a year ago. He worked for Cities Service, retiring in 1972. He was a member, deacon and Sunday school director at First Baptist Church. He married Vera Scott in 1934 at Hollis, Okla. She worked as a bookkeeper for Pampa Independent School District. She was a member of Pampa Fine Arts Association, Pampa Art Club, Pampa Senior Citizens Center, First Christian Church and Aquilla and Priscilla Sunday school class. She married Given Vance in 1942 at New York City. He died in 1985. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Davidson of Canyon and Barbara Dyer of Lakewood, N.J.; a son, Ted Vance of Puyallup, Wash.; three sisters, Helene Papageorge of Elmhurst, Long Island, N.Y., Bessie Peck of Pocatello, Idaho, and Irene Dodson of New York City; and six grandchildren. He retired from Shell Oil Co. and was a member of Hobart Baptist Church. He married Maxine Montgomery in 1941 at Oklahoma City. She died in 1995. Mr. Mertel was born in the Pakan community near Shamrock and had lived in this area all his life. He was a farmer and member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Mr. Mayberry was born in Lefors and had lived in Borger since 1950. He was a heavy equipment operator out of International Union of Operating Engineers No. 419. He married Zela Perdue in 1968 at Borger. She died in 1994. Survivors include six sons, J.D. Mayberry, Haley Mayberry and Terral Mayberry, all of Borger, Ricky D. Guinn Inc. and was a member of Faith Baptist Church of Fritch. He married Ida Owen in 1989 at Fritch. He was preceded in death by a stepson, Danny Dixon, in 1995. "Brink" Brinkley, 83, died Thursday, March 16, 2000. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jay Simpson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Kress Cemetery by Lemons Funeral Home of Plainview. Mr. Brinkley was born and raised in Leonard, attending schools in Leonard and Taylorville. During World War II, he served in the Navy and returned to Leonard after the war. In 1951, he moved to Kress. In 1978, Mr. Brinkley retired as manager of operations at Kress Co-op. After his retirement, he worked for Swisher County. He was a member of the Tulia Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason. He married Ollie Bell McBroom in 1936 at Leonard. She died in 1984. He also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mattie Lois. Survivors include three daughters, Eloise West of Lubbock, Elaine O'Daniel of Hart and Connie Heard of Allen; a son, Jim of Abilene; a brother, Bill Brinkley of Lawton, Okla.; two sisters, Helen Green of Leonard and Lilla Duncan of Lawton; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Amarillo Daily News, March 18, 2000 Edward Eugene Akers HIGGINS - Edward Eugene Akers, 87, died Thursday, March 16, 2000. Services will be at 2:30 a.m. Sunday in Higgins United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Don Cheshire and Don Travis, pastors, officiating. Burial will be in Higgins Cemetery by Mason Funeral Home of Oklahoma. Mr. Akers was raised near Follett, attended school in Loland and Higgins and attended high school in Austin and Follett. He attended college in Goodwell, Okla., and the University of Texas. After receiving his teaching certificate, Mr. Akers taught in Loland and at Buffalo School near Hooker, Okla. In 1940, he became a farmer and rancher south of Follett. In 1952, he moved to a ranch southeast of Higgins. Mr. Akers semi-retired in 1992. He served on the Shattuck school board. He also served on numerous civic and church groups. He married Leona Mae Bozarth in 1934. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sharon Merydith of Booker and Pam Tyson of Higgins; two sons, Larry of Oklahoma City and Monte of Austin; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 13 grandchildren. Mr. Harrell was born in Missouri and moved to Wellington in 1932 from Drumright, Okla. He was an Army veteran of World War II. In 1976, he retired as owner and operator of Ben Franklin's Variety Store in Wellington. He married Peggy Loving in 1940 at Wellington. She died in 1987. Survivors include a son, Ace Harrell of Wellington; a brother, Conard Harrell of Union City, Okla.; two grandsons; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Sanneman was born in Rochester, Minn., and grew up in rural Zumbrota. He graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1985 and studied at Rochester Community College and in Grand Rapids, where he received his fixed-wing pilot's license. He earned his helicopter pilot's license and flight instructor's license from Helicopter Flight in Minneapolis, where he was an instructor and worked in air-traffic control and on charter flights. He spent four summers in Alaska flying for TEMSCO Helicopters and one winter flying in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. In 1997, he joined Northwest Texas Healthcare Systems to pilot the Lifestar medical helicopter. He married Julie Ann Sorenson in 1995 at Columbia Heights, Minn. Survivors include his wife; his mother, Melinda "Linda" Sanneman of Zumbrota; a sister, Dawn Darcy of Lake City, Minn.; and his grandmother, Malinda Lorraine Sommerfield of Mazeppa. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Mr. Tinajero was born in Colecio, Mexico, and moved to Amarillo in 1921. He retired from the Fort Worth & Denver Railroad. He was treasurer of the Mexican Center Club and a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Victoria, in 1977. Survivors include four daughters, Dionisia Martinez of El Paso, Catalina Palacio and Amparo Lucero, both of Amarillo, and Carmen Hogan of Mission; seven sons, Lino C. Amarillo Daily News, March 18, 2000 Jack Earl Lancaster Jack Earl Lancaster, 72, of Amarillo, died Friday, March 17, 2000. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Paramount Baptist Church with Dr. Gil Lain, the Rev. F.M. Byford and the Rev. Robert Field, officiating. Committal services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Terrace Cemetery in Post by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Lancaster was born in Lynn County and lived in Southland for 17 years and in Lubbock for three years. He was the leader of his GUMMA military government team with the Army and stationed in Maebashi, Japan. He received his bachelor's degree and master's in education degree from Texas Tech University. Mr. Lancaster also did graduate work in administrative education and graduate work toward his Ph.D. He taught in Seminole and Post before moving to Amarillo in 1958 where he taught at Pleasant Valley Elementary School then was principal of Emerson Elementary School. From 1966 until 1986, he was the principal at Sanborn Elementary School. Mr. Lancaster retired from Amarillo Independent School District in 1986 then taught at San Jacinto Christian Academies for four years, retiring in 1992. Mr. Lancaster was a lifetime member of the Parents-Teachers Association, member of Texas Retired Teachers Association, National Educators Association, Texas State Teachers Association, Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, the Amarillo Education Association and the Paramount Baptist Church. He married Juanita Mosely in 1947 at Southland. He was preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie Jack Lancaster in 1952 and Jon Warren Lancaster in 1956. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kevin L. Lancaster, M.D., of College Station and Jonathan E. Lancaster of Amarillo; a sister, Sue Slone of Temple; two brothers, Jim Lancaster of Lubbock and Bill Lancaster of Salado; and a grandson. In 1986, she returned to Tulia and was a member of Life in the Word Assembly of God Church. She married Bacillio Contreras in 1994 at Tulia. Her first marriage was to Juan Garcia in 1956 at Lamesa. He died in 1986. Mr. Pierce was born in Hereford, Texas and lived a majority of his life in the Texas Panhandle. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Corps. He retired as a painter for the Bureau of Mines. Mr. Pierce was named "Honorary Cowhand" with Cal Farley's Boys Ranch. He was a Methodist. In 1997, he moved to Milburn. He married Neelie Reed in 1946 at Hereford. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Deborah Sweatt of Tishomingo and Donna Jones of Weatherford; a son, Danny Pierce of Liberal, Kan.; a brother, Ulys Pierce of Hereford; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
