Arrant, 80, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000. Services were held Wednesday with the Rev. F.M. Byford, of Paramount Baptist Church, officiating. Burial was in Llano Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Arrant was born in Shields. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1950 and moved to Amarillo in 1959. He was a computer tech specialist for IBM. He was a member of the Paramount Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Martha Arrant; three sons, Gayland Arrant of Bedford and Neal Arrant of Amarillo and Bryan Arrant of Artesia, N.M.; a brother, Bill Arrant of Amarillo; two sisters, Nell Hefner of Lubbock and Lolly Oakes of Hobbs, N.M.; and six grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Faith City Mission; City Church; Crown of Texas Hospice, 1000 S. Jefferson St., Amarillo, TX 79101; or a favorite charity. KRESS - Doyle C. Barham, 82, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000, in Amarillo. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Cremation and arrangements by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Barham was born in Russett, Okla. He was a farmer and a construction worker for Swisher County. He retired in 1986. He married Willie Mae Walker in 1950 at Hollis, Okla. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Max Barham and Dorman Walker, both of Lubbock, Winfred Walker of Thackerville, Okla., and Doyle Walker of Amarillo; a sister, Marie Barham of Madill, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. LUBBOCK - Daniel Edward Barrett, 80, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel at Plainview with the Rev. Randy Land officiating. Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens at Plainview. Mr. Barrett was born in Bowie and grew up in Cotton Center. He served in the Army during World War II. He had farmed in Cotton Center and was a member of First Baptist Church in Cotton Center. He married Bertha Irene Kester in 1939 at Plainview. She died in 1975. Survivors include three daughters, Patricia Heathcoat of Lubbock, Carolyn Nicholson of Amherst and Norma Kuykendall of Wolfforth; two sons, Wayne Barrett of Amherst and Glenn Barrett of Lubbock; two brothers, Doug Barrett and Calvin Barrett, both of Cotton Center; six sisters, Virginia Easley of Dumas, Josephine Shultz and Gertrude Downs, both of Lubbock, Wanda Horseford and Darlene Ashley, both of Cotton Center and Faye Barlett of Petersburg; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. PAMPA - Betty Jameson Carter, 69, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Memory Gardens Cemetery with her son, the Rev. Mark Carter, pastor of the Redeemer of Lutheran Church at Claremore, Okla., officiating. Arrangements are by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mrs. Carter was born in Odonnell. She graduated from Odonnell High School. She moved to Pampa in 1959 from Oregon. She had worked as a waitress at the Coronado Inn and Dyers Bar-B-Que. She was a charter member of the Bible Church of Pampa. She married Cecil V. Jameson in 1953 at Amarillo. He died in 1974. She also was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Carter, in 1997. She married E.B. Carter in 1985 at Pampa. Survivors include her husband; four sons, Glenn Jameson and Mike Slaughter, both of Pampa, Mark Carter of Claremore and Mike Carter of Phoenix; two daughters, Judy Leard of Odessa and Sharon Valdez of Austin; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. TULIA - Katherine Cole, 87, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Davenport officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral Home. Mrs. Cole was born in Montague County. She moved from Wichita County to the Union Hill community in Swisher County, where she attended school. She also attended school in Tulia. She had lived in the Arney community for many years and moved to Tulia in 1960. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Tulia. She married Claude Cole in 1929 at Tulia. He died in 1970. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Marjorie Cole. Survivors include a daughter, Janice Cowart of Cedar Crest, N.M.; three sons, Wayne Cole of Ridgecrest, Calif., Fred Cole of Amarillo and Larry "Happy" Cole of Tulia; a sister, Margaret Diller of Odessa; a brother, Jack Watts of Palo Pinto; five granddaughters; and two great-grandchildren. PLAINVIEW - Marie Cooper died Thursday. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Lemons Funeral Home Memorial Chapel with Dr. Travis Hart, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park. Mrs. Cooper was born in Tenaha and grew up in Clarendon. After graduating from high school in Clarendon, she graduated from Southern Methodist University. Before moving to Plainview in 1949, she lived in Washington, El Paso, Phoenix, and Tulsa, Okla. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution and First Baptist Church and Pastor's Class in Plainview. She married B.O. Cooper in 1936 at Amarillo. He died in 1978. Survivors include a son, J. Carlton Cooper of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. DIMMITT - Bertha Doran, 85, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in East Mound Cemetery in Matador with the Rev. Royce Jennings, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Matador, officiating. Arrangements are by Seigler Funeral Home of Matador. Miss Doran was born in Whiteflat. She had lived in Dimmitt for 45 years, moving from Motley County. She taught elementary school and retired from the Dimmitt Independent School District. She was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors include four nieces; and five nephews. Craig Dougherty, 34, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000. Services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Martin Road Chapel, 15th Avenue and Martin Road, with the Rev. Bill Gehm of Grace Community Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Dougherty was a lifetime resident of Amarillo and graduated from Palo Duro High School. He worked for the City Parks Department, as a stage hand at the Civic Center and as a route driver for Coca-Cola. He was a member of the National Rifle Association. Survivors include his wife, Tina Dougherty; a daughter, Paige Dougherty of Amarillo; his parents, Jimmie and Judy Dougherty of Amarillo; a brother, Mike Dougherty of Amarillo; and grandmother, Pauline Packebush of Amarillo. The family will be at 2008 Walker. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home. HENRIETTA - James Harl Hargis, 74, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in Oklahoma City. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery at Henrietta. Mr. Hargis was born in Romi, Okla. He worked as a drilling superintendent. He married Mae Kirby in 1954 at Clayton, N.M. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Charla Hargis of Spearman; three sons, Randy Hargis of Elk City, Kent Hargis of Spearman and Kirby Hargis of Katy; four brothers, Leo Hargis and Lawrence Hargis, both of Wichita Falls, Clyde Hargis of Henrietta and Doyle Hargis of Mossy Rock, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Visitation will be from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. CLOVIS, N.M. - Robert "Bob" Meyer, 95, formerly of Clovis, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000, in Liberal, Kan. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Steed-Todd Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens. Mr. Meyer was born in Indian Territory, Okla. He worked as an auto mechanic for Hanes Chevrolet (later known as Meadors-Stewart Chevrolet and then Doc Stewart Chevrolet). He moved to Liberal 12 years ago. He was a member of Western Street Church of Christ in Liberal. His wife, Jewell Meyer, preceded him in death. Survivors include a son, Bob Meyer of El Dorado, Kan.; and two daughters, Barbara Boone of Amarillo, Texas, and Beverly Pierce of Moriarty; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Carrie Michaelis of Aurora; a son, Trent Tyler of Little Rock, Ark.; her mother, Dorthy Dearman of Amarillo; two sisters, Carla Dearman of Irving and Glenna Hickman of Amarillo; and a brother, Larry Dearman of Canyon. Donald Ray Osborne, 65, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000. The family will be at 917 N. Carolina St. Dolores Maryann "Dee Dee" Paul, 83, of Canyon, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000. Memorial services were at 10 a.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church Chapel in Amarillo with Norman Stuppi officiating. Burial was private. Cremation and arrangements were by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mrs. Paul was born in Belleville, Ill. She graduated as valedictorian of her class at Belleville High School in 1935. She attended Washington University in St. Louis on a scholarship and graduated cum laude with a degree in chemistry in 1939. She worked for Standard Oil and also studied electronics. During World War II, she taught radio to Army Air Corps cadets. After the war, she and her husband, W.A. "Bill" Paul Jr., started a residential construction business. She designed the floor plans and decorated the homes they built around the Panhandle. Mrs. Paul was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo and the Amarillo Garden Club. In 1978, she moved back to Canyon, where she volunteered at Palo Duro Hospital and Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. She was a member of the Professional Educators Organization Sisterhood and was involved in the scholarship program. She helped form the Dolores and W.A. Paul Endowment Fund. Survivors include her husband; two sons, David Paul of Amarillo and Ken Paul of Angleton; and a sister, Ruth Kienle of Corvallis, Ore. ROARING SPRINGS - Delbert Perryman, 61, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Roaring Springs Cemetery with the Rev. Rickey Lawrence, pastor of Roaring Springs Full Gospel Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Seigler Funeral Home. Mr. Perryman was born in Dickens County. He lived in the Afton community and graduated from Patton Springs High School. He had lived in Tyler for five years before returning to Roaring Springs several years ago. He was a truck driver and had worked as an oil field chemical engineer. Mr. Perryman married Janice "Pee Wee" Brooks in 1957 at Afton. Survivors include his wife. CLAUDE - Carl Burton "Buck" Phelps, 85, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Fairview Assembly of God Church in Amarillo, with the Rev. Cliff H. Houghton, pastor, and the Rev. Max Beggs of Amarillo officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors. Mr. Phelps was born in Lamar, Okla., and lived in Phillips from 1942 until moving to Claude in 1981. He retired from Phillips Petroleum Co. He was a Mason and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 719 and a member and Past Master of Adobe Walls Masonic Lodge No. 1355. He was a member of Fairview Assembly of God Church in Amarillo. He married Opal Lee Authur in 1933 at Lamar. His son, Aubry Phelps, died in 1992. Survivors include his wife; a son, Ryland Lee Phelps of Amarillo; three daughters, Chris Graves and Virginia Bagwell, both of Claude, and Kay Sam of Amarillo; two brothers, Ned Phelps of Washington and Nick Phelps of Oklahoma; a sister, Irene Brown of Oklahoma City; two half sisters, Hazel and Goldie, both of Amarillo; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. GUYMON, Okla. - Jeff Audry Poteete, 100, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Henson-Novak Funeral Chapel with Gerald Stewart, minister of the Church of Christ in Perry, and Scott Smith, minister of the Church of Christ in Guymon, officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors. Mr. Poteete was born in Solgohachia, Ark. He attended school in Conway County. He was a farmer and carpenter. He moved to the Elmwood area in 1951 and worked at a dairy farm and at a gas station in Balko. He later moved to Goodwell and worked for Panhandle State University, retiring in 1971. He then moved to Guymon. He was a member of the Church of Christ and served as a deacon, Bible class teacher, song leader and lay preacher. Mr. Poteete married Maggie Parker in 1923. She died in 1960. Survivors include three daughters, Lavene Smith of Craig, Colo., and Nadene Evins and Gloria Grice, both of Guymon; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Dunaway Manor. Memorials will be accepted at the funeral home. CACTUS - Maria Ramos, 41, died Monday, Aug. 21, 2000. Services will be in Anahuac, Chihuahua, Mexico. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors in Dumas. Mrs. Ramos was born in Anahuac and had lived in Cactus for eight years. She was a production worker for Montford and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Cactus. She married Octavio Ramos in 1976 at Mexico. Elvira Merle Henry Rea, 77, of Canyon, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Memory Gardens Chapel with the Rev. Derrick Neil Sheckells, 38, formerly of Amarillo, died Sunday, Aug. 6, 2000, in Live Oak, Fla. Burial will be Sept. 2, 2000, in Kayser Eastview Cemetery at Mountainair, N.M. Mr. Sheckells was born in Albuquerque, N.M. He was a Navy veteran. He was an electrician and had worked in corporate security. Survivors include mother and stepfather, Tony and Mary Lou Reyna of Live Oak; his stepmother, Sharon Aikens, of Amarillo; two brothers, Shawn Sheckells of Moss Point, Miss., and Stephen Aikens of Amarillo; and two sisters, Carleen Hall of Fredericksburg and Denise Mumme of Burkburnett. SPEARMAN - Cecil A. Fryrear Sr., 81, died Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000. Services were at 4 p.m. Saturday in Union Church with the Rev. Bill Sparks officiating. Burial was in the Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Fryrear was born in Tuttle, Okla., and had lived in the Spearman area since 1944. He worked for the city of Spearman and retired from Enron as a truck driver. He married Naomi Randall in 1943 at Chickasha, Okla. Survivors include his wife; a son, Cecil Fryrear Jr. of Sanford Ranch; two daughters, Sue Tindell of Spearman and Donna Giddens of Mangum, Okla.; a brother, Finley C. FRIONA - Glen C. Stevick, 76, died Friday, Aug. 25, 2000. Mr. Stevick was born in Bovina and was a lifetime resident of Parmer County. After working as a carpenter and owning and operating Stevick Ditching, he farmed until his retirement in 1990. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Corps. He was a member of Sixth Street Church of Christ. He married Ruth McElroy in 1945 at Fort Myers, Fla. She died in July. His daughter, Sally Beth Stevick, died in 1982. Survivors include two daughters, Karen Harrelson of Friona and Janet LaFrance of Abilene; two sons, James Stevick of Hereford and Ronnie Stevick of Friona; a brother, Larry Stevick of Dallas; and a sister, Betty Kuykendal of San Francisco; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. He moved to Morton in 1945 from Lubbock. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corp. He owned and operated Jay's Garage in Morton. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the First Missionary Baptist Church. He married Alta Singleton in 1947 at Clovis, N.M. He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Don Studdard, in 1956. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jimmy Studdard of Levelland and Ronald Studdard of Plainview; three brothers, Hershel Studdard of Bellevue and Billy Joe Studdard and Forrest Studdard, both of Curryville, Mo.; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Ms. Walsh had worked for Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, Kmart and Albertsons, where she did food demonstrations. She was preceded in death by a son, Roy Allen Stewart. Survivors include two sons, Jon Walsh of Hillsboro, Mo., and Kevin Walsh of St. Genevieve, Mo.; a daughter, Patt Fore of Florissant, Mo.; three brothers, Steve Phillips of Amarillo, Charles Phillips of Eugene, Ore., and Ronald Phillips of Brady; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The family will be at 3208 S. Monroe St. in Amarillo. Omer A. Wood, 82, formerly of Amarillo, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, in Wichita, Kan. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St., with Dr. Charles Jones officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Wood was born in Hedley and attended Hedley High School. A longtime resident of Amarillo, he worked as a postal clerk until his retirement. He was a former member of Second Baptist Church in Amarillo, and a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Wichita. He was also a member of the Postal Union. During World War II, he served with the Navy. He married Lillian Mae Sharp in 1937 at Memphis. She died in 1983. His daughter, Gwen Vinez, died in 1983. Survivors include a daughter, Elaine Hood of Wichita; two sisters, Loyce Moffitt and Opal Johnson, both of Amarillo; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Former Amarillo head librarian and 1977 Texas Librarian of the Year, Alice Green, died Saturday, Aug. 26, 2000. She was 83. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 5401 Bell St., with President Robert J. Barton and Bishop Joe Lockwood officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Miss Green was born in Waverly, Kan., and moved to Amarillo in 1933. A graduate of Amarillo High School, she attended Amarillo College and West Texas State University. After receiving a degree in library science from the University of Oklahoma at Norman, she became a librarian in Terrell and later worked for the Texas State Library in Austin. In 1941, she accepted the job of general library assistant at the Amarillo Public Library. Six years into her career with the Amarillo library, then situated in a wing of the old Municipal Auditorium, Miss Green accepted the role of head librarian, according to Globe-News files. Under her leadership, the facility moved in 1955 to the former Bivins home at 10th Avenue and Polk Street. In the fall of 1976, the Amarillo Library moved to its present location at Fourth Avenue and Buchanan Street, which became the Central Library as North, Southeast and Southwest branches were constructed. During Miss Green's tenure, the library staff expanded from eight to 100. Miss Green served the Texas Library Association as vice chairwoman in 1972 and was honored as Texas Librarian of the Year in 1977. She suggested formation of the Friends of the Library in 1951 and began the first adult discussion groups in 1952. Upon her retirement in 1982, the Friends presented Miss Green a gift of an English holiday. While saying she didn't have any profound advice for today's generations, Miss Green endorsed the value of reading. "I'm a believer in the value of libraries and books," she said.
