He retired from the Fort Worth & Denver Railroad and worked for the Campbell Ranch. He was a member of Chaparral Hills Baptist Church in Amarillo. He married Mildred Crawford in 1936 at Waco. He graduated from high school in Silverton and earned degrees from Lubbock Christian University and Abilene Christian University. He moved to Vernon in 1987 from Lubbock. He worked as an athletic trainer and teacher for the Vernon Independent School District. He was a member and an elder at Wilbarger Street Church of Christ. Mr. Word was born in Higgins. He grew up in the Bishop community, where he attended school, until transferring to Higgins High School. He worked as a roughneck before starting his own truck driving business. He had worked with companies hauling oversized loads. He was a member of the Higgins Hospital Board, the fire department and had also been an ambulance driver. He married Ann State in 1960 at Higgins. He was preceded in death by an infant son. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Ronna Valentine of Arnett, Okla., and Rhea Walker of Perryton; his mother, Elma Lue Case of Lipscomb; a brother, Arba Word of Higgins; two sisters, Lee Nell Littau of Shattuck and Vera Hogg of Hooker; and a granddaughter. He died in 1979. He worked for the Herring Hotel as a bellhop; was a cab driver for Dependable Cab Co.; served as a red cap at Amarillo International Airport; and worked as a construction laborer during the building of High Plains Baptist Hospital. He earned his bachelor's degree in psychology / American history from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1954. He was the 1953 president and a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He graduated from Texas Christian University Brite Divinity College in 1957 with a master's of divinity degree in doctrine and theology. At TCU he was president of the Homiletic Guild (Student Body), he was on the Dean's Honor Roll. He served as senior pastor of First Christian Church at Panhandle. He was named Minister of the Year in 1960 by Texas Christian Churches. He was senior pastor of First Christian Church in Winfield, Kan., and had a program on radio station KNIC. Rev. Kennedy served as associate rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oakland, Calif., headmaster of St. Paul's School, the chaplain of Mills College and the chaplain of St. Paul's Towers, a retirement residence. He was headmaster of Heritage Ranch School in Calistoga, Calif., and served as the vicar of the Episcopal Church in Ignacio, Marin County, Calif. He served as vicar / rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Ben Lomond, Calif. He was president of the Scott's Valley Rotary Club and was the founding president of the San Lorenzo Valley Rotary Club. Rev. Kennedy served as rector of St. Jude's Episcopal Church in Cupertino, Calif. He retired in 1998. He served as interim rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Borger and had served as interim rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Amarillo since May. He had been a member of the Downtown Rotary Club, Lion's Club and the Chamber of Commerce Highway Committee. He had been a Cub Scout Master and was a member of the Polk Street United Methodist Church. He married Martha Atkinson in 1946 at Tucumcari, N.M. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kathy Potter of San Antonio and Bobbie Baldridge of El Paso; two sons, John Dryden and Randy Dryden, both of Amarillo; a sister, Doris Hubbard of Monahans; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. VanCamp was born in East Chain Township. She attended East Chain School, until becoming employed as a live-in housekeeper. She worked as a restaurant cook in Blue Earth, Minn. In 1955, she moved to Follett and then to Gage in 1956. Mrs. VanCamp was an active member of the Church of God at Gage. She married Claude Newman VanCamp in 1941 at Elmore, Minn. He died in 1994. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elkhart. He married Leota Warner in 1944 at Elk City.
