Vigil services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Brentwood Chapel at Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St., in Amarillo. Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Umbarger by Bishop L.T. Matthiesen, Monsignor Harold Waldow and Monsignor Joe Bixeman. Monsignor Sonderman was born in Dayton, Ohio, and ordained a priest in Cincinnati, Ohio, for the Diocese of Amarillo. His appointments for the Diocese included: chaplain of St. Francis Convent; rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral; pastor of St. Mary's; pastor of St. Francis; pastor of Blessed Sacrament; Vicar General; Vice Chancellor; and Diocesan Consultor. He was also assistant pastor of St. Joseph's at Rowena and of St. Anthony's at Dalhart; chaplain of Loretto Hospital at Dalhart; pastor of St. Peter and St. Paul at Dumas; pastor of St. Francis Xavier at Hermleigh and St. John the Evangelist; pastor of St. Alcie at Plainview; pastor of St. John's at Borger; pastor of Mission of St. Ann's at Stinnett; and pastor of St. Mary's at Umbarger. Monsignor Sonderman had been assistant editor for the West Texas Register in 1957 and was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor in 1985. He later retired to St. Joseph's Home for Priests at Panhandle. Survivors include a sister, Louise Hunt of Elm Grove, Wis.; and a brother, Donald Sonderman of Northville, Mich. Amarillo Globe-News Jan. 1, 2001 Maxine Smith Maxine Smith, 64, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000. Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Llano Mausoleum Chapel with Mr. Gene Shelburne of Anna Street Church of Christ officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Smith was born in Stillwell, Okla. After graduating from Chalocko Indian School in Oklahoma, she moved to Amarillo and worked as a beautician and as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Co. After retiring, she worked in retail sales for Gattis Shoes and in the shoe departments of The Hollywood and Dunlap's. She married Coy G. Smith in 1993 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Sabrina K. Skidmore Blake of Amarillo; a son, Gregory Van Skidmore of Amarillo; a sister, Lorene White; a brother, Nelson Dunnaway of Stillwell; and a grandchild. "Red" McGill, 72, of Amarillo, died Saturday, Dec. 30, 2000. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Stephen United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Smith officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in North Fairview Cemetery at Wellington by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. McGill was born in Wellington. After graduating from Wellington High School, he attended Amarillo College and served with the Navy during World War II. He later served with the Texas National Guard and worked in the Fire Protection Engineering Department at Pantex. A member of Wellington United Methodist Church, he was active with Kids, Inc., Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the school board of the River Road Independent School District. He married Helen Caldwell in 1952 at Wellington. His son, Jerry D. McGill, died in December. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Terri Lyn Starkey of Tallahassee, Fla.; a son, Jim McGill of Amarillo; two sisters, Helen Walters of Phoenix and Elizabeth Murray of Tulsa, Okla.; two brothers, John K. Arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mrs. Seymour was born in Post and was a longtime resident of Amarillo. A housewife, she was a member of Trinity Fellowship Church. She married Clarence Seymour in 1946 at Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Carol Honea of Amarillo; a son, Gary Seymour of Amarillo; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The body will not be available for viewing. Amarillo Globe-News Jan. 1, 2001 New Mexico Samuel Eugene Hastings CLOVIS, N.M. - Samuel Eugene Hastings, 84, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000. Cremation has taken place. No services are planned. Burial will be in Houston National Cemetery at Houston by Muffley Funeral Home. Mr. Hastings was born in Alief. He served with the Army Air Corps during World War II and later retired as a Staff Sergeant. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 654 in Houston. He returned to Clovis this year. A former longtime resident of Hereford, Mr. Long was retired from careers in real estate sales and the trucking industry. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Corps. He married Ruth Menefee in 1942 at Yuma, Ariz. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ron Long of Bedford and Rick Long of Watauga; a daughter, Becky Zeeck of Austin; a brother, Fred Long of Riverside, Calif.; three sisters, Anna Mae Bearden of Fort Worth, Bobbi Meyers of Duncanville and Waunita Paul of Canyon; and three grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Leon Springs First Baptist Church with the Rev. Charley Day officiating. Burial will follow in Mission Burial Park North by Mission Park North Funeral Directors. Mr. Stone was born in Beckham County, Okla. A former resident of Pampa, he served with the National Guard for nine years and moved to San Antonio 12 years ago. He retired from USAA in 1993 as a claims adjuster and examiner and was active with the Claims Associations of Texas. A member of First Baptist Church in Leon Springs, he taught Sunday school, coached Little League baseball, worked with the Can Sur Mount division of the American Cancer Society and played Santa Claus in the USAA Christmas Cheer program. Survivors include his wife, Lynell Stone; a daughter, Rae Lynne Stone of San Antonio; two sons, Jerry Stone of Arlington and Keith Stone of Lake Dallas; his mother, Mellie Stone of Sweetwater, Okla.; a sister, Reva Greer of Burns Flat, Okla.; and five grandchildren. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Boyd was born in Amarillo, graduated from Tascosa High School in 1969 and received a bachelor's degree in business and computer science from St. Regis University. She later worked for Phillips Petroleum and was a training manager for Indus in Dallas. She married Michael Clayton "Clay" Boyd in 1971 at Amarillo. He also died Thursday. Survivors include two daughters, Priscilla Karyn Boyd and Mary Jane Boyd, both of Austin; and two brothers, Bruce Wayne Jones of Amarillo and David Sheldon Jones of Lubbock. He worked at Phillips Petroleum. He was working as a business consultant for InterRel in Dallas. He married Priscilla Katherine "Kathi" Jones in 1971 at Amarillo. She also died Thursday. Dean McNamara, interim pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Loraine by Lemons Funeral Home. Mrs. Duke was born in Eastland County. She married Charles Melton Duke in 1917 at Eastland County. He died in 1974. She was also preceded in death by two sons and a daughter. Mrs. Layman was born in Wingate and moved to Deaf Smith County in 1936 from Seymour. She was a dietitian and a member of Assembly of God. She married Clarence Layman Sr., in 1935 at Clovis, N.M. He died in 1983. Her daughter, Iris Minis, died in 1990. Her son, Tommy Layman, died in 1946. Survivors include three sons, C.L. Layman Jr. of Hereford, Richard Layman of Copperas Cove and Wesley Layman of Lamy, N.M.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will be at 311 Star. A self-employed electrician, he was a member of First Baptist Church, Pampa Rifle Club and Pampa Amateur Radio Club. He married Robbie Messinger in 1970 at Greenbelt Lake. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Charles Patrick Chilton of Oklahoma City, Michael Alfred Chilton of Purcell, Okla., Jesse Steven Chilton of Pampa, and James Lynn Chilton of Lubbock; a stepdaughter, Jeanine Russell of Dallas; two sisters, Shirley Hargrove of Pampa and Opal Yount of Oklahoma City; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gearn was born in Shattuck, Okla., and moved to Castro County in 1948 and to Hereford in 1949. A bookkeeper, she worked as a secretary to her sons at Gearn Industries and was a partner in Gearn Machine Works. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the first Sweetheart of Hereford Country Club and a grade school mentor. She married Kenny D. Gearn Sr. in 1942 at Las Vegas Survivors include her husband; four sons, Geary Gearn and Tim Gearn, both of Hereford, Ken D. Gearn Jr. of Canyon, and Gordon Gearn of Oklahoma City; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends in Fellowship Hall following services. Burial will be in Floyd County Memorial Park by Moore-RoseWhite Funeral Home. Mrs. Covington was born in Stephens County and was a lifetime resident of Floyd County. After graduating from high school in Lakeview, she attended West Texas State Teachers College. A homemaker, she was a member of First Baptist Church. She married F.M. Covington in 1923. He died in 1974. Survivors include three sons, Bob Covington of Lubbock, Jack Covington of Lockney and Kent Covington of Floydada; a daughter, Jean Mayes of Dallas; two brothers, Buck Hall of Amarillo and Henry Hall of Artesia, N.M.; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
