Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors of Dumas. Mr. Freeman was born in Gray, Okla., and had lived in Dumas for 43 years. He served in the Army during World War II. Mr. Freeman worked for the Excel Helium Plant for many years before his retirement. He married Irene Johnson on March 23, 1954, in Clovis, N.M. He was preceded in death by a son, James Paul "Jimmy" Freeman, who was killed in Vietnam in 1968; by two brothers, Kenneth Freeman and Alvin Freeman; and by a sister, Edna Threlkald. Burial will be private. Mrs. Smith was born on July 11, 1940, in Beaumont, to John and Mary Posey. She graduated from South Park High School and attended Hotel Dieu School of Nursing, Lamar University and graduated from Chenier Business College in business administration and accounting. She entered the Marine Corps, where she met and married Alfred E. Smith of New York. Mr. Smith preceded her in death. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star with more than 42 years of service. She was a charter member of the Marine Corps League of Beaumont. She helped organize and served in several offices of the South Park Neighborhood Association in Beaumont. She was most proud of her volunteering with the numerous nonprofit organizations, where she received several awards and recognition. She also was preceded in death by a sister and a brother. Amarillo Globe-News, June 1, 2001 Alfred Douglass Wirtz GUYMON - Alfred Douglass "Doug" Wirtz, 70, died Sunday, May 27, 2001, in Little Rock, Ark. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Jim Jacobson officiating. Arrangements are by Henson-Novak Funeral Directors. Mr. Wirtz was born on May 11, 1931, in Brownfield, Texas, the son of Malcolm and Raye Wirtz. He attended school in Amarillo and Amarillo College. A husband, father, businessman and longtime Guymon resident, Doug served in the 36th Division of the Texas National Guard from 1950 to 1962, obtaining the rank of first lieutenant. On Nov. 3, 1951, Doug was united in marriage with Betty Joyce "Betsy" Hicks in Waco. They lived in Amarillo, Albuquerque, N.M., and Roswell, N.M. In 1965, they moved to Guymon, where he partnered with this father in the lumber business. They purchased Youstler Lumber Co. in 1967 from Juanita Youstler and E.T. Guymon Jr., and renamed it Wirtz Lumber & Supply Inc. Doug was very active in community affairs, he was a member of the Kiwanis, serving as president from 1972 to 1973 and received the "Kiwanian of the Year" in 1987. Doug supported the Boy Scouts of America in varying capacities. He served as Scout Master, Explorer sponsor, vice president of Adobe Walls Council and president for Adobe Walls Council for two years. In 1981, he received the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to youth, and in 1994 he was awarded the James E. West Fellow citation. Mr. Wirtz also served as past director in the Guymon Chamber of Commerce and director of the Oklahoma Lumberman's Association. He was a youth sponsor for the Presbyterian Church. He was actively involved in the beginning stages of the Guymon Centennial planning committee. He was preceded in death by both of his parents. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Betsy; a daughter, Kim Bloss and her husband, Mike Bloss, of Lakewood, Colo.; a son, Larry Wirtz and his wife, Shelley Wirtz, of Guymon; a brother, Joe Wirtz and wife of Washington, Maine; and four grandchildren, Natalie and Cassie Bloss of Lakewood and Molly and Clara Wirtz of Guymon.
