She was a homemaker and a member of the Mangum Church of Christ. She married Frank Peeler in 1928 at Mangum. He died in 1970. She was a homemaker and gardener. She was a member of the Earth United Methodist Church, where she was active in WSCS and taught Sunday school. She married Floyd Ernest Burgess in 1926 at Vinson. He managed motels in Amarillo and Austin before retiring and returning to White Deer in the early 1980s. He was a Presbyterian. He married Irene Brock in 1952 at Clarendon. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ida A. Stewart, in 1950; and by a son, Gilbert Stewart, in 1998. Mr. Bruns was born in Snyder. He moved from Mountain Park, Okla., to Parmer County in the early 1930s. After 1937, he moved to the Stegall community in Bailey County and farmed. He moved to Clovis, N.M., and was a brakeman for the Santa Fe Railway. In 1947 he moved to Aiken and in 1951 returned to the farm in Parmer County. He was instrumental in bringing irrigation, natural gas and telephone service to southwest Parmer County. Mr. Bruns served as chairman of the Parmer County Republican Party and was director of Parmer County Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He married Ruby Nell Morris in 1937 at Clovis, N.M. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Morris Bruns, Jerry Bruns and Bruce Bruns, all of Muleshoe, and Mark Bruns of Littlefield; three daughters, Judy Watson of Breckenridge, Toni Tucker of Possum Kingdom and Jane Stephens of Shallowater; a sister, Ruth Briscoe of Muleshoe; a brother, Don Bruns of Muleshoe; seven grandchildren; and a greatgranddaughter. A graduate of Littlefield High School, he received his degree in animal husbandry in 1935. He was a member of the Senior Livestock Judging Team that won the International Livestock Judging Contest in 1934 and was a charter member of the Texas Tech Block and Bridle Club. He taught vocational agriculture in Antony, Claude and Panhandle school districts. He was the Gray and Carson County Extension Agent and was the first manager of the Texas Tech's Pan-Tech Research Farms in 1947. Mr. Smith pioneered promoting performance sale of beef bulls and organizing the first record beef cattle association, now known as Beef Improvement Federation. He received the Pioneer Performance Registry International Award in 1976 and the BIF Education Pioneer Award in 1977. He helped establish the Simmental Association and the Simbrah Association. He was a member of the Polk Street United Methodist Church and the Gleaner's Sunday school class, where he also taught. Mr. Smith was married to Phalba Carnes in 1938. She died in 1999. Survivors include two sons, Phillip Smith of Panhandle and Bill Smith of Amarillo; a sister, Mrs. S.A. Brooks of Groveton; a brother, Stanley Smith of Paoli, Okla.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. They moved to Dumas in 1943 and owned grocery stores in Dumas and Sunray. She was a member of United Methodist Church and the Women's Society of Christian Service. She also was a charter member of the Dumas Garden Club and a member of the Cotton Club. She and her husband moved to Amarillo in 1981. He died in 1986. Mrs. Collings was a Girl Scout leader and worked with youth groups. She was a member os St. Stephen United Methodist Church. Mrs. Carley was born in Waelder, Gonzales County, Texas, east of San Antonio. She moved to Crosbyton, Texas. She also farmed with her family in Roaring Springs, Texas, and Motley County, Texas. She was married to Dexter Dannie "Dan" Carley in 1926 at Crosby County. They lived in Dickens County, Texas, for 19 years before moving to Kalgary, Texas, then to the Bethel community in Portales. They had also lived in Farwell, Texas, and Spur. Her husband died in 1971. Mr. Bleiker was born and raised in Clayton and was a lifelong resident of the Texline and Clayton areas. In 1961, he married Judy Lee Rooney. She died in 1968. In 1973, he married Mary Moriarty in Clayton. He was a cowboy on area ranches and feedlots. He moved to the Des Moines area in 1977 and to Texline in 1983. Mr. Bleiker served in the New Mexico National Guard and was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. In 1920, he moved to Floyd County from Bryan County, Okla. He attended the Lone Star School and graduated from Lockney High in 1932. During World War II, he worked as a stem fitter on the steam locomotives. He owned Workman Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning and retired in 1976. He was director and founding member of the Lockney Senior Citizens Center. He was a member of Lockney Masonic Lodge, a 32nd Degree Mason, and past Worshipful Master. Mr. Workman was a member of the Lockney First United Methodist Church. He was married to Edna E. Snodgrass in 1935 at Lone Star. VanHooser, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2001, at Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Anderson, pastor of Keeler Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Garden at Highland Park Cemetery. Mr. VanHooser was born in Delaware County, Okla. He retired in 1989 as an engineer for the Texas Highway Department. In 1960, he moved to Borger with the Bureau of Reclamation. He served in the Army during the Korean War. In 1964, he married Elsie Jaunata Pardue. She died in 1966. A son, Hanns Eric VanHooser, also preceded him in death in 1987. Survivors include two stepsons, Gene Pardue of Amarillo and Jerry Wayne Matthews of Ardmore, Okla.; two stepdaughters, Teresa Fay Landon of Warrensburg, Mo., and Anita Matthews of Dalhart; and two sisters, Francis Elliott and Nadine Elliott, both of Washington. Amarillo Daily News, Feb. 2, 2001 Winifred Mae Orcutt VEGA - Winifred Mae Orcutt, 69, of Muleshoe and formerly of Vega, died Thursday, Feb. 1, 2001. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Peach, pastor, and the Rev. Randy Tucker, of Muleshoe, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at Vega by Vega Funeral Home. Mrs. Orcutt was born in Newkirk, Okla. She had lived in Vega before moving to Muleshoe a few years ago. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Vega. She was married to Hyrum Van Orcutt in 1958 at Fairfax, Okla. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kerry George of Vega and Robin Dickerson of Muleshoe; two sons, Sam Orcutt of Amarillo and Scott Orcutt of Muleshoe; a sister, Loretta Hernandez of Donaldsville, La.; and eight grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Muleshoe Area Healthcare, 106 W. Ave. H, Muleshoe, TX 79347. The body will be available for viewing from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the funeral home. The family will be at 603 S. 11th Ave.
