As a child, she moved with her parents, Tom and Bess Young, and older brother, Robert, to Bartlesville, Okla., where she attended school. She graduated from College High School in 1946. She married George Henry Gilliland on Jan. 6, 1951. She worked for the legal department of Phillips Petroleum Co. until the birth of her fourth child. The family moved to Borger in August 1965. Following a few years as a homemaker, she returned to work for Phillips Petroleum Co. in 1972 at the Copolymer Plant. She retired in 1985. She was active in the Jane Phillips Sorority, American Legion Auxiliary and Housewives Bowling League. She was a member of Eastern Star and First Baptist Church of Sanford. Survivors include her husband, George Henry Gilliland; three daughters, Karen Gilliland of San Bernardino, Calif., Sandy Gilliland of Borger and Gayle Passons of Chandler, Ariz.; a son, Gerald "Jerry" Gilliland of Austin; a sister, Norma Livingston of Lawrenceville, Ga.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She had been an area resident since 1962, living in the Grandview-Hopkins area, White Deer and Skellytown. She worked as a nurse's aide at High Plains Nursing Home in Borger for several years. She attended Assembly of God Church in Skellytown. She was a guitar player and enjoyed singing and playing gospel and country-western music. She married Otis "Red" Henson on March 19, 1947, in McAlester. Mr. Milburn was born in Rolla, Kan., to Ira L. and Dottie Eversoll Milburn. He married Norma Faye Baker on July 8, 1950, in Santa Fe, N.M. He moved to Canadian 38 years ago from Liberal, Kan. He was a petroleum consultant for King Well Service. He was a member of the Central Baptist Church and a life member of the NRA. He was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Milburn in 1981; and a faithful companion, KoKo in 1999. Arrangements are by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home. Mr. Gossett served with the Army in World War II. He worked with the New Mexico State Police for four years and was also a cowboy. He moved from Hereford to Friona where he had lived for the past nine years. He was a talented sculptor and had produced several western sculptures. He was the Director of the Special Education Program with the Tulia Independent School District. He worked for West Texas State University and Texas Tech University as the Director of the Upward Bound Program for Special Education students. He worked for 10 years in Tulia as the Swisher County Adult Probation Officer. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tulia. He was also active in the Toastmasters Club and the Tulia Kiwania's Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hedger, in 1974; and a son, Larry Hedger. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 2, 2001 Evelyn Potter Kruse Evelyn Potter Kruse, 85, of Amarillo, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Murray Gossett, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Kruse was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Waynoka, Okla., to Lucian John Potter and Viola Quinn Potter. Her father died when she was 8 years old and she moved with her family to Dalhart. In 1927, the family moved to Amarillo. She attended Johnson Elementary School, Elizabeth Nixson Junior High School and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1933. She attended Fleming Business College for one year and St. Anthony's School of Nursing from 1934 to 1937. She joined the American Red Cross in 1937 following graduation from nursing school and served as a volunteer for more than 63 years. She became a nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital in 1937. In 1947, she attended the University of Texas School of Nursing and worked at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin. She returned to Amarillo to work as a nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital in 1948. On April 30, 1948, she married Melvin Claude Kruse. In 1949, she worked as a private nurse to Lester Grumke while he recovered from severe burns. Six months before Pantex opened, she joined their medical department and worked for Pantex from 1949 to 1954. She was the head surgical nurse at St. Anthony's Hospital from 1954 to 1956. She was a nurse for Dr. Prescott "Peck" Harrelson from 1957 to 1964 in his private medical practice. She then joined the medical intensive care unit at St. Anthony's Hospital from 1965 to 1971. In 1972, she worked in surgery at Northwest Texas Hospital for six months. She was the Chief Nurse of the Emergency Room at Northwest Texas Hospital from 1972 to 1978. She loved nursing, but in 1978 she was forced to retire due to osteoporosis. Over the years, Evelyn volunteered as a nurse at a number of Red Cross projects and disasters including: city immunization clinics, an oil fire in Dumas, the Badger Apartment fire in Amarillo; tornadoes in Canyon, Hereford, Silverton, Miami, LeFors, Plainview and Borger as well as Shattuck, Okla., and Woodward, Okla. She helped victims of the Lawrence Lake floods in 1981 and 1982. She assisted earthquake survivors in Mexico City and survivors of Puerto Rico's Hurricane Hugo in 1989. She helped victims of the Mississippi River floods in Alabama, Missouri and Mississippi in 1993. Evelyn received numerous awards over the years including: Volunteer Nurse of the Year from the Greater Amarillo Chapter of the American Red Cross in 1989; the Florence Nightengale Award for providing care and understanding to those in need in 1992; Honorary Grand Cross of Color for Rainbow Girls; and the 100 Million Dollar Club of the Shriner's Hospitals for Crippled Children. She was a member of REACT, a disaster assistance organization, the A.E. Shirley Order of the Eastern Star, where she held numerous offices including Worthy Matron, the Avihk Temple Daughters of the Nile. She helped organize and was the first captain of their patrol unit and served as Queen of the Nile in 1975. Evelyn volunteered on a number of medical air flights over the years transporting burned and injured patients to hospitals for treatment. She regularly coordinated efforts to make stuffed clowns and other animals to deliver to children that were patients at Shrine Hospitals for crippled and burned children around the nation. She coordinated, established, and supervised the First Aid Station at the Amarillo Fair Park Coliseum for more than 50 years from 1948 to 1999 providing first-aid care and emergency assistance for the annual Tri-State Fair, rodeos, concerts and the annual Shrine Circus. In May 2001, at a surprise ceremony in her honor, Evelyn was presented with both her 50 and 60-year volunteer service pins by the American Red Cross. During the ceremony, the First Aid station at the new Amarillo National Center fairgrounds coliseum was officially named the Evelyn Potter Kruse First Aid Station. Amarillo Mayor, Trent Sizemore, also presented her with a proclamation from the Amarillo City Commission naming May 19, 2001, as Evelyn Potter Kruse Day in Amarillo. She was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. Survivors include three nephews, Rick Potter and his wife, Mary, of Austin, Wayne Evans of College Station and Mark Evans of Houston; two nieces, Kathryn Evans Robinson and her husband, David, of Wesley, Ark., and DiAnn Kruse Davis and her husband, Leonard, of Balch Springs; two cousins, Jack Sears and his wife, Jean, of Vero Beach, Fla., and Delores Dietmeyer of St. Louis; three great-nieces; and six great-nephews. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Gonzales was born in Tucumcari, N.M. She lived in Amarillo most of her life. She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Abel S. Hernandez in 1981 and Jose H. Aguilar Sr. in 1996; a daughter, Margie Preciado in 1994; and a son, Joe Aguilar Jr. in 1990. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Brooks Funeral Directors. Mrs. Beggs was born June 23, 1916, in Vernon to John and Oma Pearl Gentry Bell. She attended Vernon High School and married the Rev. A.L. Beggs in the Longview Community in 1932. She and her husband pastored in Morton, Tahoka, Big Lake, McCamey, Turkey and Calexico, Calif. They then pastored Fairview Assembly of God in Amarillo from 1959 to 1980. She was a very significant part of her husband's ministry, working in all departments of the church and community while also raising four sons. She was a member of Caprock Christian Fellowship of Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1991; a half-brother, Pat Barnett; and a sister, Madeline Galligher. Survivors include four sons, Jerry Lee Beggs of Seattle, the Rev. Max L. Beggs and the Rev. Mrs. Rushing was born Jan. 8, 1921, in Wapanucka, Okla., a daughter of the late Henry Harrison Ballard and Mary Alice Spencer Huff Ballard. She married Orban Rushing on Dec. 16, 1939, in Oklahoma. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Llano Cemetery of Amarillo. Mrs. Morris, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away Friday, Aug. 31, 2001, in Fort Worth, after a brief battle with cancer. Jeanie Alberta Moore was born on March 18, 1927, in Cimarron, N.M. She moved to Amarillo in 1944 and to Fort Worth in 1991. She was a founding member of Temple Baptist Church and Coulter Road Baptist Church in Amarillo, and also of Solid Rock Baptist Church in Fort Worth. She was an avid fisherwoman and bridge player. She was preceded in death by her husbands, C.L. Miller and A.B. Morris. Survivors include two sons, Billy Miller and wife, Jill, of Round Rock and Shott Miller and wife, Deborah, of Fort Worth; a daughter, Sami Miller Gordon of Fort Worth; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a lifelong best friend, Barbara Autry of Amarillo. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 2, 2001 Freda Thornely Shipp LUBBOCK - Freda Thornely Shipp, 77, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2001. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Franklin-Bartley Funeral Home with the Rev. Sallye Garrett Tomberlin officiating. Mrs. Shipp was born July 4, 1924, in Choctaw County, Okla., the seventh of eight children. She was an educator in Amarillo for many years. She got her degree in education from West Texas State University in 1958. She taught first grade for 26 years and helped an entire generation of Amarillo children learn to read. This was her most enduring legacy that she was justifiably proud of, but never saw as anything more than doing what she loved. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Shipp. Survivors include a daughter, Pamela Shipp Glasgow; a son-in-law, Gary White; two sisters, Reba Wiggins and Helen Jensen and husband, Bob; a brother, Cleo Thornley and wife, Mary; two grandchildren, Nathaniel and Cheyenne Glasgow; a great-grandchild, Sayer; a great niece, Ardra McDonald Hughes; a soul brother, Ray Alfred Thornley; and special friends, J.E. Mrs. Burk was born Feb. 18, 1915, in Harmon County, Hollis, Okla., the daughter of Daniel Edward Cansler and Ema Nancy Jane Hilton Cansler. She graduated from Hollis High School in 1934. She married Norman Ligon Burk on Sept. 22, 1935. She and her husband farmed in Harmon County, then moved to Kress, Texas, in 1942, and began farming on the high plains of Texas. In 1946 they built and operated Tulia Livestock Auction where she served as bookkeeper and business manager. She served as a 4-H Club leader in Swisher County for many years. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Des Moines where she was very active in church functions serving as an elder's wife. She moved to Raton in 1967 after acquiring the Rafter Four Ranch, originally established by Elijah Johnson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Ligon Burk; and a grandchild, Bonnie Burk. Survivors include three sons, Kinan and Mark Burk, both of Raton, and Norman Burk of Amarillo; a daughter, Brenda Campbell of Hereford, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be to the High Plains Children's Home, 11461 S. Western, Amarillo, TX 79118; or Christian Relief Fund, 1501 W. 58th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79114. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 2, 2001 Sushi chef Shiraishi dies TOKYO (AP) - Yoshiaki Shiraishi, the man who brought sushi to the masses in Japan by serving it up on a conveyor belt in fast food-type restaurants, died Wednesday of liver cirrhosis. He was 87. Shiraishi, chairman of Genroku Sangyo Co., died in a hospital in Osaka, a western Japanese city known for its food lovers.
