Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 4, 2001 Elsewhere Linda Lea Caldwell WALSH, Colo. - Linda Lea Caldwell, 51, of Sanford, Texas, and formerly of Walsh, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2001. Services were at 10 a.m. Monday in First Baptist Church with Cecil Burnhem officiating. Burial was in Mount Carmel Cemetery at Campo, Colo., by Dykes Funeral Home of Walsh. Mrs. Caldwell was born Dec. 15, 1949, in Walsh to Gladden and Ethel Scott. The beautiful dark-haired, brown-eyed baby girl, named Linda Lea, was the fourth and last addition to the Gladden Scott family. Two big brothers, Carl and Verlin, and one big sister, Rita, welcomed Linda home that wintry day in 1949. During 1949, the year Linda was born, Harry S. Truman was president and a first-class stamp cost three cents. Milton Berle hosted the first telethon to benefit cancer research and 45 rpm records were first sold in the United States. Linda started a working career very young. As a waitress or as a clerk, she may have even served you. At 12, she worked in the Rainbow Cafe. Later, and for many years, Linda worked at Dapron's Cafe and, for a short time, managed it. She also worked in Bradburn's Drug Store. Linda attended Walsh schools for 111/2 years. At age, 40, and purely for self-satisfaction versus some externally driven need, she earned a G.E.D. One of the greatest joys of Linda's life began with the birth of her son, Dusty Alan, on Oct. 14, 1969. Linda and her sister, Rita, were very close. Their children, who were of course cousins, were very much raised together like brothers and sisters, and often with the assistance of Grandma Ethel. In her 20s, Linda left the cafe business and went to work for City Market, the local Walsh grocery store. She had a quick wit and good sense of humor, with a smile or a joke for everyone. Linda found her soul companion, Dall Caldwell. She and Dall were married in Boise City, Okla., on March 30, 1977. The union between Linda and Dall bestowed honor of stepmother to five daughters. These children, and subsequent grandchildren, created a wealth of enjoyable experiences for Linda for many years. She and son, Dusty, left town-life and headed south about 30 miles to live with Dall near the Cimarron River. Here, she enjoyed the quite Baca County country life and all it had to offer. During this time, she worked with Pat and Pauline Crill doing genetic plant research. Dall adopted Dusty when he was 10 years of age. Linda and Dall's union created another son. Unfortunately, however, Joe Dall was stillborn on Oct. 29, 1986. In 1994, and after a significant period of illness, Linda was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. She painfully experienced two operations, which seemed to eradicate the problem. Not too long thereafter, however, an MRI yielded the discovery of another growth; this time it was located on her optic nerve. Another surgery followed, which robbed Linda of some of her sight. These bouts with cancer, although she never complained, unfairly burdened parts of life for Linda and for those whom she so dearly loved. In June of this year, after three years of remission, Linda was diagnosed with yet another brain tumor. Linda and Dall had moved from Baca County to Sanford, Texas, in 1997. This is where Linda lived during part of her fight with cancer. As per Linda's request she was able to pass in the comfort of her home with her husband and son by her side. Linda enjoyed watching football, especially when her son was playing. She enjoyed watching rodeos, playing cards, traveling and spending time with family. She was a positive, independent, giggly person. She always made you feel welcome in her home. Linda was a great cook, a meticulous housekeeper, and enjoyed life to the fullest. She lost the battle with cancer on Aug. 29, 2001. She was preceded in death by her grandparents; her parents, Gladden and Ethel Scott; her son, Joe Dall; her sister-in-law, Laura; and her brother-in-law, Marvin. She leaves precious memories to her husband of 24 plus years, Dall Caldwell; to her son, Dusty, and his wife, Angela; and daughters, Paula, Pam, ReJina, ReLinda and Monica; her sister, Rita; brothers, Carl and Verlin; three sons-in-law; three brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; 12 grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends. The family suggests memorials be to Baca County Hospice. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 4, 2001 Ruth Kirby ABILENE - Ruth Kirby, 94, formerly of Lubbock, died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001.
