Memorial Mass will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Monsignor Rex Nicholl, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Tenorio figured the odds were against him. A college education? A career in the FBI? Not when his parents had to scrape for every dollar, sometimes as migrant farm workers, to raise 13 children. But, his skills as a high school fullback in Amarillo led to a college scholarship to Benedictine College in Atchison, Kan., and he was off and running. A retired FBI agent who helped pave the way for fellow Hispanics and minorities in the agency, he died at his home due to head injuries he suffered in a fall while painting his home. A former high school teacher in El Paso, he joined the FBI in 1970. Two years later he was transferred to the San Diego office, where he specialized at various times in investigating kidnappings, anti-terrorism and bank robberies. He specialized in hostage/crisis management. When he retired in 1994, he was the highest ranking Hispanic undercover agent in the FBI's San Diego office. By then, he had become a mentor to several agents, including Ruben Garcia, who today is assistant director of the FBI's criminal division in Washington, D.C. "Henry was one of those individuals who takes you under his wing and shows you the ropes," Garcia said. "He was a tremendous people person. He recognized that you have to establish rapport with the general public, and he lived that." Bilingual, Mr. Tenorio often investigated kidnappings on both sides of the border. He became a liaison between the San Diego office and law enforcement agencies in Tijuana and Ensenada. This led to solving cases that would have been more difficult without his involvement, according to Aaron Sanchez, a former FBI colleague. "Henry loved his job so much that he often said he hadn't worked a day in his life," Sanchez said. Even in retirement, he worked up to 40 hours a week as a consultant for law enforcement agencies, often doing background checks on suspects for the FBI. "He was sitting in on wiretaps for the Drug Enforcement Administration as late as a week before his death," his son Chris Tenorio said. During his FBI career, he won Police Olympics golf tournaments in California and Nevada and at one time maintained a two handicap. Later, as a security consultant on the PGA Tour, he befriended such pros as Lee Trevino and Chi Chi Rodriguez, once serving as a caddie for the latter. He operated the Dos Amigos Foundation, which Mr. Rodriguez founded to raise funds for underprivileged children and orphanages in Mexico. He organized a golf tournament in October 2001 to benefit children of FBI agents who had died in the line of duty. Before his death, Mr. Tenorio had been planning a golf event in December in Escondido to benefit families of victims of the September 11 terrorists attacks. Mr. Tenorio was born in Torrington, Wyo., where his family of migrant farm workers had been harvesting sugar beet crops. Eventually, his father took the family to Amarillo and operated various businesses, including a restaurant and a pool hall. He joined his siblings in helping support the family, at one time working after school in his uncle's shoeshine shop. He excelled in baseball, track and football at Price College in Amarillo, where he was elected class president in consecutive years. Later, at Benedictine College, he played on league championship football teams in 1960 and 1961 and ran on the Raven's school-record 440-yard relay team. He earned a master's degree in education administration from University of Texas at El Paso, where he taught Spanish and directed intramural sports. Before joining the FBI, he taught two years at Jesuit High in El Paso and received back-to-back Teacher of the Year awards. Survivors include his wife, Judy; two daughters, Stefanie Beddingfield of La Jolla, Calif., and Lisa Tenorio of San Francisco; two sons, Christopher Tenorio and Brent Tenorio, both of San Diego; three sisters, Geneva T. Melvin Suttle told people gathered around a small casket Tuesday that life is like a rose garden made up of different varieties. "When you pick a bouquet, you get all sizes," he said. "The little bud of this life God has chosen to take back." Eight people attended graveside services at Llano Cemetery for "Baby Jane Doe" who was found Friday in a commode in the West Texas A&M University student center. The baby was estimated to be five months developed, but officials do not know whether she was stillborn, Randall County Justice of the Peace E. Jay Hail said. Suttle, from San Jacinto Assembly of God Church, prayed for the baby and her parents, who have not been identified. "She has touched the hearts and lives across the city," Suttle said about the baby. "I pray for the family of this little girl, whoever it may be." Holley Funeral Home in Canyon provided pink carnations with a white bow that rested on top of the tiny white casket. Randall County paid for the burial because the baby was considered an indigent, and state law requires the county to pay for people who cannot afford the service, said Joella McPherson, Randall County auditor. "It has nothing to do with the fact that it was a fetus," she said. "It was the fact they found an indigent child with no family or no support. It doesn't matter their age." The county pays for 10 to 15 burials a year, McPherson said. Hail said autopsy results will be available in about two weeks. Russell Long, WT president, said the campus offers free and confidential counseling services, and he hopes the mother will take advantage of the university's help. "We extend our condolences, and we're concerned about the woman's well-being," Long said. "If she thinks it's necessary, I hope she will seek medical and/or psychological counseling." Billie Carson of Holley Funeral Home said she cried for five hours when the body was brought to the funeral home. The body arrived in a red plastic sack from the autopsy in Lubbock. "She had a perfect face," Carson said after the burial. "I wrapped her in a pink blanket. I bought the blanket. I just had to do that."
