Private burial will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park by Sparkman / Hillcrest Funeral Home. Mrs. Tower died with her daughters at her side at St. Paul Hospital. She was born June 4, 1920, in San Diego, Calif. She was nicknamed "Honey," and grew up in Wichita Falls. She graduated from Wichita Falls High School in 1937. She attended Hardin Junior College prior to attending Texas State Teacher's College for Women (now Texas Women's University). She graduated in 1941 with a bachelor of arts degree in music, majoring in piano. She then spent the next 10 years in Wichita Falls teaching piano and organ. She also worked with the Red Cross and Canteen Corps. "Honey" played for weddings and funerals and taught at Midwestern State College (now Midwestern University.) She became the organist at First Methodist Church and married the pastor's son, John Goodwin Tower, in 1952. Later that year, John took a leave from his political science teaching position at Midwestern and they moved to England, where he studied at the London School of Economics. In 1953, they returned to Wichita Falls and he resumed teaching at Midwestern while she would care for three daughters born soon thereafter. In 1961, Lou helped John win a special election to the United States Senate. That victory as the first Republican elected statewide since Reconstruction began building a two-party Texas. The couple moved to Washington, D.C., where he served 24 years in the Senate. During their time in Washington she tended to their daughters and served in the Senate Ladies' Red Cross, the Texas Congressional Delegation Club, the International Club, and as a charming hostess in the nation's capital. Mrs. Tower was one of the first wives to campaign actively in a "grassroots" manner for her husband. Lou traveled tirelessly by car, bus, airplane, and on foot across Texas. She is credited as pivotal to his first re-election in 1966. Lou was preceded in death by her parents, Marian and Grover Bullington; a sister, Marian Bullington Webb; a brother, Grover Bullington Jr.; a daughter, Marian Tower; and her husband, Sen. John Tower. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Penny and David Cook and Jeanne and Berry Cox; grandsons, Tower Cook and Justin and John Cox, all of Dallas.
