Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Pioneer Chapel at N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Jim Shelburne, pastor of Washington Avenue Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Bassett was born in Armstrong County and was a longtime resident of Amarillo, where he graduated from Amarillo High School. During World War II, he served with the Army Air Corps, participated in the Ploesti Air Raid and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. A registered gemologist, he worked as a jeweler for Wagner's, Duncan and Boyd Jewelers. He was a volunteer at the Veteran's Administration Hospital and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Washington Avenue Christian Church. He married Patricia Hudson in 1938 at Odessa. She died in 1989. He married Laverne Wilhelm in 1990 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Darla Mueller of Midland; two stepsons, Don Middleton of Granbury and Gary Wilhelm of Grand Prairie; three grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. The family will be at 3308 E. 12th and suggests memorials be to Veterans Affairs Hospital; or Washington Avenue Christian Church. Amarillo Daily News Jan. 8, 2001 Joy M. Lumpkin Joy M. Lumpkin, 58, of Amarillo, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Ivy Chapel at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle, with Phil Mercado, associate pastor of Trinity Fellowship, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Lumpkin was born in Silverton and was a longtime resident of Amarillo. A member of Trinity Fellowship, she worked for the Bureau of Reclamation and later as a computer operator for the Veterans Affairs Hospital until her retirement in 1995. Survivors include two daughters, Starla Hodnett of Hobbs, N.M., and Dana Johnson of Amarillo; two sisters, Virginia Daniels and June Willimon, both of Amarillo; a brother, Dale McCord of McAllen; and six grandchildren. Ms. Bateman was born in Italy. A longtime resident of Amarillo, she worked for Plains Creamery and Blackburn's Department Store. She was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Bell Avenue Chapel at Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 Bell St., with the Rev. Vernon O'Kelly and the Rev. Fred Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Ball was born in Ballinger and graduated from Tulia High School. A longtime resident of Amarillo, she worked as credit manager for Borden's. She was a past member of Forest Hill Methodist Church and a member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church. Her first husband, J.B. "Jake" Fletcher, died in 1969. Her second husband, J.D. "Tex" Ball, died in 1991. Her son, Mike Fletcher, died in 1976. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara McDowell of Amarillo; a stepdaughter, Dottie Henk of Amarillo; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. "Sam" Edwards, 79, died Friday, Jan. 5, 2001, in Lubbock. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Buddy Payne, pastor, officiating and the Rev. Marvin Gregory of First United Methodist Church in Tahoka assisting. Burial with military honors will follow in Terrace Cemetery by Justice-Mason Funeral Home. Mr. Edwards was born in Grassland. After graduating from Tahoka High School, he attended Howard Payne College and served with the Navy during World War II. He later attended Metropolitan Business College in Dallas. A farmer in the Grassland area, he moved to Tahoka and after retiring served as Lynn County Justice of the Peace. In 1998, he moved to Post and served as temporary Justice of the Peace for Garza County. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Post and the John Miller Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6797. He married Maxine Lindley in 1946 at O'Donnell. She died in 1993. He married Jeanette Bell in 1999 at Roswell, N.M. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jack Edwards of Dimmitt and Jody Edwards of Lubbock; a daughter, Jill Baker of Canadian; two sisters, Laura Hoover of Tennessee and Louise Sewell of Houma, La.; and six grandchildren. Arrangements are by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Mr. McCray was born in West Virginia and moved to Fritch from Amarillo in 1983. A Methodist and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he retired as a boilermaker / welder in 1980 and was a member of the Boilermakers Union No. 531. Burial will be in Gruver Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mr. Ward was born in Mills County and was a longtime resident of Gruver. A former Sunday school teacher and Army veteran of the South Pacific during World War II, he was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Spearman. He was former president and member of Faith Lutheran Church Council and former president and member of Gruver Independent School District Board of Trustees. His daughter, Karen Ward, died in 1958. He married Betsy Dahl in 1948 at Clovis, N.M. Survivors include his wife; a son, J.W. Ward of Gruver; a daughter, Ann McClure of Amarillo; and four grandchildren. Mrs. Taylor was born in Ridgely, Md., and moved to Clarendon in 1964 from Cincinnati. She was a homemaker. She married Kenneth Taylor in 1960 at Cincinnati. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Eddie Taylor and Rick Taylor, both of Amarillo; and two brothers, Harold Middleton of Amarillo and Johnny Middleton of Memphis. Gary Smith officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman. Mrs. Hester was born in Waseca, Minn., and grew up in Carrier, Okla. After attending business college, she worked as a court reporter in Purcell, Okla., and lived in Cisco. She married E.H. "Jimmie" Hester in 1930 at Purcell and they moved to Spearman and farmed. Her husband died in 1980. She was a volunteer at Hansford County Library Thrift Shop and a member of First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School. Survivors include a daughter, Pauledde Plank of Stillwater, Okla.; two sons, Tony Hester of Lubbock and David Hester of Ruidoso, N.M.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Church of Christ with Mr. Benny Young, Mr. Richard Edwards and Mr. Barry Francis officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery by Myers-Long Funeral Directors. Mrs. McCracken was born in Serrett, Indian Territory, Okla., and farmed in Atoka, Okla., and Gasoline before moving to Quitaque. She was a former member of the Church of Christ at Gasoline and a member of the Church of Christ at Quitaque. She married Amos "Boone" McCracken in 1926. He died in 1978. Survivors include two daughters, Paulita Joyce Young of Arizona and Glenda Juan Francis of Rock Creek; a son, Stewart Boone of Tulia; a brother, Ralph Carter of Lubbock; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-greatgrandchildren. Mrs. McAninch was born in Floyd County and grew up in Briscoe County, where she graduated from Quitaque High School. She married Bob McAninch in 1942 at Hollis, Okla. Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Debbie Young of Plainview; a son, Gary Bob McAninch of Spring; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Dean was born in Richfield, Utah. She worked as a waitress. She married Charles "Jack" Dean in 1971 at Winnemucca, Nev. He preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Grande of Kalispell, Mont.; two sons, Robert Claire Brue of Portland, Ore., and Jimmy L. Brue of Hereford; a sister, Jean Atwell of Battle Ground, Wash.; a brother, Robert Riley of Vancouver, Wash.; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Nelson was born in Rock Creek, Okla., and moved from Duncan, Okla., to Oklahoma Lane, where she graduated from high school. A homemaker, she was a member of the Oklahoma Lane Methodist Church. She married Conrad Nelson in 1940 at Clovis N.M. He died in 1976. Her daughter, Mary Frances, also preceded her in death.
