Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church of Stratford with the Rev. Jerry Stewart, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Stratford Cemetery by White Funeral Home of Lubbock. Mr. Harris was born May 23, 1920, in Kansas City, Mo., to the late Charles Harris and Leonora Bibbee Harris. He was a lifetime resident of Stratford until moving to Lubbock in 1990. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Harris of Boise City, Okla.; three sons, Heil Harris of Canyon, Lanny Harris and Barry Harris, both of Lubbock; a brother, Herschell Harris of St. Simons Island, Ga.; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tulsa, Okla., by Minton / Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Mr. Axelrod was born in Bartlesville, Okla., and had been a longtime resident of Borger. He was owner of Gibson Machine & Tool Co. He served as a major in the Army infantry during World War II, where he received the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star and the European Theatre Ribbon. Steven Spielberg made a video for Holocaust Liberation and Mr. Axelrod's unit was one of the first liberators of a concentration camp. He was a member of Temple B'Nai Israel of Amarillo. He was a member of Borger Rotary Club since 1947. He was past president of Borger Rotary and was awarded Paul Harris Fellowship in 1969 and 1970. He also was a Shriner. He donated items to Hutchison County Museum and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Axelrod; a son, Dwight Axelrod of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Sheryl Springer and husband, Harold, of Tulsa; a sister, Phyllis Melinger of Amarillo; and two grandchildren, Sean Massie and Eric Massie. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 10, 2001 Clara Marie Holmes WHEELER - Clara Marie Finsterwald Holmes, 94, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Wheeler Cemetery with Bill Morrison, minister of the Church of Christ, officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Home. Mrs. Holmes was born April 30, 1907, to Abraham and Sophia Schnell Finsterwald on the family ranch in Wheeler County. Mr. and Mrs. Finsterwald were a pioneer ranching family in Wheeler County. Mrs. Holmes had lived in Albuquerque, N.M., since 1945 and moved back to Wheeler in 1995. She had worked in banking in Wheeler and Albuquerque and had owned and operated a variety store in Wheeler. She loved gardening. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Mary Finsterwald of Wheeler; and several nieces and nephews. The family suggests memorials be to the Wheeler Public Library. Fernando Martinez officiating. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery at Hereford. Mr. Flores was born April 11, 1929, in Weslaco, the son of Andres and Santos Flores. He married Lupe Medeles in Raymondville in 1950. He was an independent trucker for several years. In 1967, he went to work for the Holly Sugar Plant in Hereford as a mechanic. He retired from Holly Sugar after 22 years. Mr. Flores was a loving father. He was a member of the Baptist church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, a brother and a great-granddaughter. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Rudy Flores of San Antonio, Sonny Flores of Lubbock and Johnny Flores of Hereford; four daughters, Tina Perez of Hereford, Esther Flores of Canyon, Connie Hedges of Union City, Calif., and Ginny Crabtree of Leavenworth, Kan.; two sisters, Esther Gonzalez and Antonia Salinas, both of Raymondville; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He married Cleta Bevers June 1, 1935, in Altus, Okla. She preceded him in death in 1992. Mr. Manning retired from the Texas Highway Department after 45 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Crowell. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Hopkins, 78, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in Amarillo. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Church of Christ with Glendell Smith and Billy McCallie officiating. Cremation and arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Perryton. Mr. Hopkins graduated from high school in Chillicothe in 1941. He was the most valuable player during his senior year. After graduation he played in the All-Star game in Houston and the North / South Oil Bowl in Wichita Falls. He graduated from Texas Tech on a football scholarship. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed in England. Mr. Hopkins was an assistant football coach in Ralls from 1948 to 1950. He was the head coach in Matador, where he coached all sports. His awards include 1954 Coach of the Year in Class B and Sportsmanship Award from the football officials and regional winners in football. He moved to Sundown and was the head coach and athletic director from 1956 to 1961. He was awarded 1959 Coach of the Year in all classes by Lubbock Avalanche. Two teams went to state finals. Mr. Hopkins moved to Perryton and was the head coach and athletic director from 1961 to 1967. In 1967, he retired from coaching and went into school administration. He retired in 1985 to become a full-time "granddad." Survivors include his wife, Billie Hopkins; a daughter, Jeannie Hale of Perryton; a son, Tony Hopkins of Perryton; sisters, Lerease Williams of Lubbock and Jois June Barnett of Altus, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Mason was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert Campbell, in 1964; by her second husband, Mitch Mason, in 1979; and by five grandchildren. Burial will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Nazareth by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Huseman was born in Umbarger to Meinrod and Agnes Hollenstein. She attended public school in Umbarger and graduated from St. Mary's in Amarillo. Mrs. Huseman was married to Vincent Huseman in Umbarger in 1947. They lived in the Nazareth community, where they operated a dairy farm and raised their seven children. Mrs. Huseman's special calling was caring for seriously ill family members. For several years after retiring from the dairy, Mrs. Huseman cared for the elderly people in surrounding communities. Mrs. Huseman was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Nazareth and the St. Thomas Catholic Church in Amarillo. She was a member of the Christian Mothers and the Catholic Daughters of America. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent C. Huseman, on Dec. 11, 1996. Survivors include three daughters, Yvonne Ehly of Amarillo, Theresa Birkenfield of Nazareth and Kathleen Huseman; four sons, Kenneth Huseman of Midland, Timothy Huseman of Comanche, Ted Huseman of Amarillo and Gary Huseman of River Ridge, La.; three sisters, Martha Huseman and Anne Kleman, both of Amarillo, and Emma Nihill of Anaheim, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 10, 2001 Elsewhere Oleta Faye Osborn SAN MANUEL, Ariz. - Oleta Fay Osborn, 68, formerly of Memphis, Texas, died Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memphis Funeral Home Chapel at Memphis with Tom Posey, retired pastor of the First Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Memphis. Mrs. Osborn married Jim Osborn on Dec. 15, 1950. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in San Manuel. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Jeff Osborn of Oracle and Jay Osborn of Sahuarita; a daughter, Jamie Cole of San Manuel; two sisters, Leona Burk of Estelline, Texas, and Iola Muhley of Rising Star, Texas; and six grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Fairview Cemetery Association, P.O. Box 265, Memphis, TX 79245; or a favorite charity.
