Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 15, 2001 Michael Townsend Cornelison PAMPA - Michael Townsend Cornelison, 18, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. Services will be at 3 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with Dr. Randy White, pastor, the Rev. John Glover, pastor of First Baptist Church in Gober, and the Rev. Sterling Edwards, youth minister of First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors. Mr. Cornelison was born Jan. 2, 1983, at Pampa. He was currently a sophomore at Oklahoma Christian University. He graduated from Pampa High School in 2001 and received a scholarship to attend OCU as well as a local leadership scholarship. He was a pre-med student in the university's college of science and engineering. His achievements include membership in President Bush's Award for Outstanding Academic Excellence in 2001. He signed with OCU to play NAIA tennis. As a four-year varsity member of the Pampa Harvesters, Michael was team district champion four years running from 1997-2000. He qualified for Spring Regionals in doubles for the 2000-2001 years, reaching the finals in 2001. During his four years lettering in tennis at Pampa High School, Michael earned the Hustle Award, the Play Hard Award and the Leadership Award. He was captain his junior and senior year as well as most valuable player in the district. He was ranked as Super Champion in United States Tennis Association and USTA Texas. Michael had 176 UIL high school wins credited to his career. Michael was a candidate to National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. He was recommended as a scholar to National Youth Leadership Council, a Congressional training foundation. While attending Pampa High School, he participated in the superintendent's "Distinguished Achievement Program," served as president of the DFYIT program, a drug prevention program, and was chosen by Pampa Rotary Club as "Rotary Youth Leadership Award" recipient. As a four-year member of "Who's Who" in sports, he was noted for his participation in tennis and soccer. He was inducted into academic "Who's Who in American Schools" for the years 2000 to 2001. He was a member of National Honor Society and participated in youth choir at First Baptist Church, as well as volunteering with children's choir. Patrick Six and Judge Jim Brown officiating. Burial will be in Old Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Mr. Brown was born March 9, 1931, at Ratcliff, Ark. He was in the Air Force during the Korean War. After his service, he worked for Sheriff Paul Gaither in Amarillo and owned and operated two Humble dealerships in Amarillo. John, Wanda and son Robert moved to Spearman to work for J.B. Cooke, sheriff of Hansford County. He went into farming and ranching in 1963 and retired in 1993. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Spearman. He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Brown Sr. and Callie Irene Haney Brown; and a brother, Teddy Wayne Brown. Survivors include his wife, Wanda; a son, Robert Eugene Brown of El Paso; two sisters, Ada Bea Bunch and husband, David, of Tucson, Ariz., and Jerry Sue White of Greenville; a brother, Jimmy D. Services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with the Rev. Davlyn Duesterhaus and the Rev. V.A. Trussell officiating. Private family burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at Memphis. Mrs. Trussell was born in Chickasha, Okla., and grew up in Memphis. She married Ardell Trussell on Feb. 3, 1936, at Memphis. She graduated from Charm Beauty School. She worked for 25 years as a beautician for Sunset Lady Fair Salon. She lived for 12 years at Northwest Village Apartments, spending the last year at Kirkland Court. She painted oil canvas and was a gifted artist. She was a member of San Jacinto Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1955. He attended River Road Junior High School and graduated from Caprock High School in 1975. He attended Amarillo College. He lived in Dallas and Trinidad working in construction before joining the Navy 14 years ago. He was an information specialist technician onboard the USS Russell, which was on a six-month deployment to the Middle East. He married Melinda Sue Wood on June 7, 1980, at Dallas. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Whitaker in 1990 at Amarillo. Survivors include his wife, Melinda, of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; a daughter, Lindsay Whitaker of Pearl Harbor; a son, Ross Whitaker of Pearl Harbor; his mother, Glenda Faye Sain of Amarillo; two brothers, Roger Whitaker of Amarillo and Rodney Whitaker of Phoenix; and 11 nieces and nephews.
