He was a welder and master horseman. He also served in the Army. He was preceded in death by a son, Cary James Abbott. Survivors include two sons, Andy Abbott and Billy Joe "B.J." He attended Colby College in Waterville, Maine. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 with the rank of sergeant. He was a member of the Canyon Police Department from 1946 to 1950. He was on the Amarillo Police force from March 28, 1950, to March 31, 1986, retiring with the rank of captain. He was a member of Bushland Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Vantive Nickelson in 1986; his second wife, Rosemary White Nickelson in 1995; and two brothers, Ray Nickelson and Kenneth Nickelson. Mrs. Fagala was born Sept. 27, 1908, in Ellis County. She and her husband, Melvin, were engaged in farming and ranching in northwest Oklahoma. Survivors include two sons, Dee Fagala of Gage and Lyle Fagala of Longmont, Colo.; eight grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Construction in February due to his ill health. Burial will be in West Park Cemetery. Ms. Johnson was born June 12, 1944, at Freestone County. She was employed at St. Anthony's Hospital for 20 years as a nurse before retiring. Amarillo Globe-News, Nov. 15, 2001 Martha Evelyn Watson Bates FRIONA - Martha Evelyn Watson Bates, 85, died Sunday, Nov. 11, 2001, in Mesquite. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Sixth Street Church of Christ with the Rev. Leon Talley, minister, officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. in Friona Cemetery by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home. Mrs. Bates was born in Killeen, Bell County. She was a teacher for many years in Friona. She began her schooling in Separ, N.M., and attended schools in Sanger and Lemore, Calif. The Watson family moved to Parmer County in 1926, and she attended Friona schools her fifth- and sixth-grade years. The boundary lines were redrawn and she finished school in Bovina, graduating in 1933 as class salutatorian. She attended college at Texas Tech, Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M., and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from West Texas State University in Canyon. She married Robert Lois Bates in 1938 at the Congregational Church in Friona. She taught in the classroom for 46 years, teaching in Jesko school, Pleasant Hill, N.M., Rhea, Channing, Estelline, and retiring from Friona Independent School District. After her retirement, she taught homebound students for six years, and served as a tutor for several more. She was a member of the Sixth Street Church of Christ in Friona, and taught Sunday school for 40 years. She was named the teacher of the year in the mid-1960s. She was the first woman to serve on the Friona City Council. She was preceded in death by her husband on May 25, 1967. Survivors include two sons, Major Phillip Bates of Lubbock and Dr. Dwight Bates of Dallas; four sisters, Lorraine Welch of Friona, Helen Teague of Cheyenne Wells, Colo., Janie Lu Lillard of Waco and Macie Hunt of DeSoto; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She married Hector Castor Calderon on Oct. 15, 1988, in Etter. She was a volunteer for Rose Ladies. She worked for 13 years for Continental Telephone and seven years for Memorial Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her father, Juan Santana; five sisters; and one brother. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Arthur Rodriguez, and Gabriel Rodriguez and wife, Becky; two daughters, Elva Mendoza and husband, Fernando, and Eva Gresham and husband, Doug; one brother, Johnny Santana and wife, Gloria, all of Dumas; two sisters, Mercedes Rodriguez and husband, Socorro, of Dumas, and Amelia Grubbs and husband, Micky Ray, of Winnsboro; her mother, Cruz Santana of Dumas; a great aunt, Mercedes Aldape of Dumas; and nine grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Nov. 15, 2001 Elsewhere Richard Earl "Dick" Runyon Jr. CORPUS CHRISTI - Richard Earl "Dick" Runyon Jr., 61, formerly of Amarillo, died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2001. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Church of the Good Shepherd. Arrangements are by Maxwell-Dunn Funeral Home. Mr. Runyon was born in Borger, but spent most of his life in Amarillo. He loved life and lived it with gusto. He was a Marine, who served his country well, completing three tours of duty in Vietnam. He was self employed as a contractor with Coastal Striping until his illness forced him to retire. He served as past president of the Coastal Bend Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse and was active in many charitable and civic projects within the community. He leaves behind a legacy of stories, sayings and a spirit that was uniquely Dick's own. At his death, his home was filled with those whom he loved and who loved him. Survivors include his wife, Rosine; two daughters, Leigh Anne Schulte and husband, Calvin; and Jennifer Runyon-Houk, all of Nazareth; a sister, Sue Becquet and husband, Robert of Corpus Christi; a brother, Jimmy Runyon of Waimanalo, Hawaii; four grandchildren, Jade, Jori, Victoria and Seth; and several nieces and nephews, including Tommy Shindler, who was particularly close and helpful to Dick.
