Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today in First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Jim Bankhead, senior pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mary Arless O'Keefe Periman was a longtime Amarillo area teacher. She was born Oct. 11, 1906, on the family farm between Pampa and White Deer, the daughter and fourth of eight children of Rufus Christopher O'Keefe and Stella Pond. At age 11, she won the state competition in Declamation for Rural Girls; competed a second time as a high school senior after winning the regional competition, and won the district high school competition in tennis. A lifelong learner, her career as a teacher began when she was certified, at age 16, by the West Texas Normal School. She graduated from West Texas State Teachers College in 1929 with a degree in English. She married a WT classmate, Carl Clyde Periman, on Aug. 14, 1933, in Chicago. Her teaching career spanned 24 years including Cuyler School (between Panhandle and White Deer); Hereford Elementary School, 1927-1928; Pampa High School, 1929-1933; and Memphis High School, 1933-1936. In Amarillo, she taught English and Spanish at Elizabeth Nixson Junior High, Sam Houston Junior High and Crockett Junior High before retiring in 1963. Mrs. Periman was a longtime member and elder of First Presbyterian Church, where she taught third-grade Sunday school and was active in the Women's Circles. A lifetime volunteer, she volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and was a member of PEO, Delta Kappa Gamma, University Women, Birthday Club, Knife and Fork and Square Dance clubs. She was preceded in death by five brothers and by her husband of 65 years, Judge Carl Periman, who died in 1999. Survivors include a son, Dr. Phillip O'Keefe Periman and his wife, Judy, of Amarillo; a daughter, Mary Jane Periman Koock Hilfer of Austin and her husband, Tony; a sister, Ella Faye Price of Amarillo; a brother, David Scott O'Keefe and his wife, Louise, of Houston; a sister-in-law, Isabelle O'Keefe of Amarillo; five grandchildren and a step-grandson, Mary Kathryn Koock Hillhouse and her husband, George, of Austin, Molly O'Keefe Koock James and her husband, Hunt, of Tampa, Theressa Alice "Tessa" Periman Walker and her husband, Tim, of Austin, Benjamin Rufus "Ben" Periman of Denver; Laura Grace Periman of Amarillo and Thomas Haley "Tom" Hilfer of Austin; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other family members. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be to the Mary Arless O'Keefe Periman scholarship fund at West Texas A&M University; the Carl and Arless Periman Library Fund at First Presbyterian Church; the Periman Fund at the Amarillo Area Foundation or the Harrington Cancer Center. The family extends profound appreciation to Felica and Tony Valdez, longtime friends and helpers; to exceptionally special caregivers, Glenna Wilson, Dorothy Edwards, Ginny Fiedler and Pat Thompson; and to the wonderful staff at BSA Hospice. We were blessed! Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 16, 2001 Area J.B. Floyd PAMPA - J.B. Floyd, 62, died Friday, Aug. 10, 2001, in Roberts County. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. at The Other Corner Bar at 2302 W. Alcock in Pampa. Mr. Floyd was born March 21, 1939, in Arnett, Okla. He was a longtime cowboy and ranch hand in New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. He also was a heavy-equipment operator for many years. He was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Logan, N.M. Survivors include a daughter, Neva Garrett of Amarillo; two sons, Mitchell Griffis and Robert Griffis Jr., both of Amarillo; his mother, Eula Floyd of Pampa; three brothers, Paul Floyd of Mineral Wells, Ardee Floyd of Godley and Roy Floyd of Pampa; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 16, 2001 Billie Louise Etheredge CHILDRESS - Billie Louise Etheredge, 83, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Norman Rushing, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Childress Cemetery by Johnson Funeral Home. Mrs. Etheredge was born July 3, 1918, in Paducah, the daughter of Tom and Mattie Hodges Pearce. She married E.D. Etheredge on Feb. 22, 1936, in Acme. Survivors include a son, Thomas O. Etheredge of Childress; a sister, Estelle Gibson of Childress; two grandchildren; and two great-grandsons. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 16, 2001 Larry Paul Sexton MULESHOE - Larry Paul Sexton, 44, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, in Lubbock. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Progress Baptist Church at Progress with the Rev. Jim Green, of Lubbock, officiating. Burial will be in Bailey County Cemetery at Muleshoe by Ellis Funeral Home of Muleshoe. Mr. Sexton was a member of the Progress Baptist Church. He had lived in Muleshoe for the last 39 years, moving from Earth. Survivors include two sons, Jason Robert Sexton and Michael Paul Sexton, both of Muleshoe; two daughters, Stephanie Michelle Soto of Meadow and Sarah Jean Sexton of Muleshoe; his parents, Thomas and Mary Sexton of Muleshoe; and a brother, Tommy Sexton of Muleshoe. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in First Baptist Church with her children and grandchildren officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Knox City Cemetery by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home. Mrs. Earp married Joseph Perry Earp on Dec. 7, 1930, in Seymour. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, James Earp and Wesley Earp, both of Denton; two daughters, Molly Stringer of Floydada and Jo Boggs of Yuma, Colo.; two sisters, Donna Ferguson of Amarillo and Pauline Myers of Knox City; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Church of Christ with Tom Craiker and Ted Kingery officiating. Burial will be in Silverton Cemetery with Masonic graveside rites. Arrangements are by Myers-Long Funeral Directors. Mr. Williams served in the Army as a military policeman. He married Bettie Ruth Yancey on Dec. 13, 1972, at Lovington, N.M. Memorial services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Lowe Funeral Chapel of Chimes in Quitman. Mr. Sherrod had lived in Wood County for a month, moving from Miami. He retired as a welder from Arkla Gas Pipeline. Survivors include a son, Tommy Simmons of Marshall; two daughters, Traci Bartee of Denton and Kristen Sherrod of Elk City, Okla.; his mother, Billie Ford of Marshall; a brother, F.E. Sherrod of Marshall; two sisters, Joyce Boothe and Debbie Sherrod, both of Marshall; and two grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Aug. 16, 2001 Ted Taylor SHALLOWATER - Ted Taylor, 80, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Rix Funeral Directors Chapel of Lubbock with Dr. Rev. Herbert Bergstrom officiating. Burial will be in Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park. Mr. Taylor served in the Army during World War II. He retired from Missouri Valley Construction Local No. 629 after 20 years. Survivors include his wife, Dena Walker Taylor of Shallowater; seven sons, Billy Taylor, Ricky Taylor, Timmy Taylor and Roy Taylor, all of Shallowater, Tom Taylor of Spur, James Taylor of Euless and Carey Taylor of Lubbock; three daughters, Mary Ann Thornton and Connie Dunlap, both of Lubbock, and Sherron Reid of Hereford; 27 grandchildren; and 27 great-grandchildren.
