C. Bourland HEREFORD - J.C. "Jake" Bourland, 84, of Hereford and formerly of Hale Center, died Monday, May 14, 2001, in Hereford. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church at Hale Center with the Rev. Gene Meacham officiating. Burial will be in Hale Center Cemetery by Freeman-Abell Funeral Home. Mr. Bourland was born Aug. 10, 1916, in Matador. He married Margaret Madera in Hale Center on Oct. 20, 1939. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Peggy Pope of Marshall, Sandra Bankhead of Refugio and Billie Day of Hereford; a son, Gary Bourland of Refugio; four sisters, Lucille Sublett of Irving, Rebecca Thompson of Beaver, Utah, and Imogene Davis and Delwin Morris, both of Sacramento, Calif.; a brother, W.M. "Shorty" Bourland of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, May 16, 2001 Maybian Rhodes DIMMITT - Maybian "Granny" Rhodes, 86, of Friona and formerly of Dimmitt, died Thursday, May 15, 2001, in Friona. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard Rhodes, pastor, and the Rev. Charles Broadhurst of Amarillo officiating. Burial will be at 5 p.m. in Friona Cemetery at Friona. Arrangements are by Ellis-Blackwell Funeral Home of Dimmitt. Mrs. Rhodes was born Jan. 16, 1915. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Dimmitt and was active in the Women's Missionary Union. She kept the nursery at First Baptist Church in Fiona for more than 20 years. She moved to Friona from Oklahoma in 1951 and to Dimmitt in 1999. She married O.C. "Friday" Rhodes on Oct. 29, 1932, in Washita County, Okla. He died July 10, 1987. She also was preceded in death by two grandsons, Kyle Rhodes in 1990 and Darryl Heinrich in 1993; and a son-in-law, Paul Coker, in 1997. Survivors include four sons, Gaylon Rhodes of Bovina, Wayne Rhodes of Friona, Cleatus Rhodes of Sayre, Okla., and Howard Rhodes of Dimmitt; four daughters, Margaret Coker of Amarillo, Darla Shelton of Suamico, Wis., and Betty Smith and Barbara Grimsley, both of Friona; three sisters, Ellen Kilday of Chowchilla, Calif., Flossie Bales of Amarillo and Coleta Stinson of Fay, Okla.; two brothers, Augustus "Tyke" Morgan of Cordell, Okla., and Sam Morgan of Whitesboro; 23 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. The body will be available for viewing from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home in Friona. The family will receive friends from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Viewing will continue from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Dimmitt. Pall bearers will be the grandsons. The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church of Dimmitt memorial fund or Dimmitt Hospice care. Amarillo Globe-News, May 16, 2001 Amarillo Blanche Edna Todd Blanche Edna Abbott Todd, 93, of Amarillo, died Friday, May 11, 2001. Services were at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40, with Dr. James E. Garrett officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mrs. Todd was born Aug. 13, 1907, in Beaukiss, Williamson County, to Martha Ann (Mattie) Layne and Silas Alexander Abbott. She was a direct descendent of Simon Miller, one of Stephen F. Austin's original 300 who colonized Texas in the 1820s. Her great-grandfather was Adam Lawrence, renowned pioneer and Indian fighter. Another ancestor, Roger Miller, died at the Alamo. She married Roy Clyde Todd in April 1925. They farmed and ranched near Wilson. They moved to Crowell in 1927 and to Amarillo in 1947, where they continued in the farm and ranch industry. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Clyde Todd, in 1975. Survivors include three sons, Perry Enos Todd of Simi Valley, Calif., Horace David Todd of Lubbock, Lahroy "Larry" Abbott Todd of Palm Desert, Calif.; a granddaughter, Cynthia Ann Todd of Simi Valley; and a great-granddaughter, Jaime Todd Comac of Orlando, Fla. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes St. Mr. Aulridge was born June 23, 1924, in Kaufman. He had been a resident of Amarillo for more than 65 years. He was a member of North Heights Church of Christ. He attended Patten High School of Amarillo. He served in the Marine Corps from 1943 to 1945. Survivors include a stepson, Nathaniel Favors of Amarillo; a sister, Shirley Cherry of Pittsburgh, Pa.; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; an uncle, Eddie Moore and Evelyn of Amarillo; and a nephew, J.B. Brownlow of Milwaukee. Amarillo Globe-News, May 16, 2001 Sam Pruitt Mitchell Services will be at 2 p.m. today in St. John Baptist Church with the Rev. Grover Neal, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Warford-Walker Mortuary, 509 N. Hughes. Mr. Mitchell was born in Bivins on July 4, 1927. He attended public school in Bivins. Following high school, he worked for Lone Star and Red River Ammunition Plant in Texarkana for 14 years. He was drafted into the Army and served from 1942 to 1946. Following his tenure from military service, he moved to Amarillo in 1957 and had been a resident for 44 years. He was employed at Pantex Plant for 24 years as a safety engineer, retiring in 1990. He also worked for Bob's Taxi from 1991-1996. Mr. Mitchell married Lillie Jean Davis in 1988. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church, where he served in the adult men's Sunday school and Bible study class. Mr. Mitchell was a volunteer at Hilltop Senior Citizen's Center. He was a member of Markwell Lodge No. 415 and the NAACP. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mattie Williams; and by two brothers, Clinton and J.L. Terry. Survivors include his wife; a stepdaughter, Kimberly McGowen of Arlington; a stepson, Gregory Davis of New Orleans; two brothers, Leatrimus Terry of Amarillo and Richard Williams of Vivens, La.; two sisters-in-law, Bonnie Terry of Amarillo and Meryl Williams of Vivens; four grandchildren, Tremelle Cook and Laurynn McGowen, both of Arlington and Noah Davis and Adam Davis, both of New Orleans; three nieces, Rita Smith and Clara Terry, both of Mesquite and Dorothy Helen Harper Clark of San Jose, Calif.; two nephews, Larry Terry of Mesquite and Johnny Lee Terry of Atlanta; a lifelong friend, Frank Belford of Colorado Springs, Colo.; also nephews, Joel Lee Terry, Phillip Jeffrey, Milton Charles, Kenneth Earl and Richard Glenn; and nieces, Brenda Williams and Carthia. The family will be at 2524 Orange St. Amarillo Globe-News, May 16, 2001 Helen Chappel Thompson Helen Chappell Thompson, 78, of Amarillo, died Monday, May 14, 2001. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Llano Cemetery with the Rev. Dr. George H. Martin, interim rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Thompson was born in New London, Conn. She served with the Red Cross during World War II at Camp Edwards, Mass. She received a commendation from the Providence Chapter of the Red Cross for her work. She was the secretary of the laboratory at Jefferson Davis Hospital in Houston and assisted with autopsies for four years. She kept vital capacity rates for Dr. Michael DeBakey in Houston. In 1992, she moved to Amarillo and was employed by St. Anthony's Hospital. After retirement, she volunteered with R.S.V.P., the Texas Department of Mental Health, Golden Age Care Center, where she was recognized for her volunteer activities, and Palo Duro Care center. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Survivors include her friends and the staff at Palo Duro Care Center. Amarillo Globe-News, May 16, 2001 L.E. Smith Memorial services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Higgins Methodist Church at Higgins with Jerry Don Cheshire, pastor, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are by Rector Funeral Home, 2800 S. Osage St. Mr. Smith was born on Dec. 5, 1918, to Louis A. and Gladys Harvey Smith of Edinburg, Ill. He enlisted in the Army as a technical sergeant on Aug. 22, 1942 and served as a bomb sight and automatic pilot repairman until Oc. 9, 1945. During the last 18 months of service, he served in the European Theatre. After the service, he was an electrical engineer in civilian life and worked and traveled throughout the United States. While in Amarillo, he met Phyllis Sawyer, whom he married in Higgins on June 21, 1959 in the home of Cloie and Ross Zenor. They moved to and made their home in Albuquerque, N.M., where they were members of the First Church of Religious Science. The moved to Higgins in 1982. He had resided in the Amarillo VA Nursing Home since June 2000. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and his wife, Phyllis. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Cloie Zenor, and her husband, Ross, of Higgins; a niece, Phyllis Suthers and her husband, Jim, of Arnett, Okla.; a nephew, Tom Zenor of Higgins; a great-nephew, Kent Suthers and his wife, Jana, of Enid, Okla; a great-niece, Amy Reece and her husband, Terry, and two great-great nephews, Tyler and Nathan Reece, all of Edmond, Okla; and many friends. The family suggests memorials be to the Amarillo VA Hospice or to the Abraham Memorial Home of Canadian, Texas.
