Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Garrett, senior pastor, officiating. Private burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Ballengee was born in Electra on Oct. 5, 1922. She moved to Amarillo with her parents in 1926, a few months before she was 4 years of age. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1940 and spent one year at Amarillo College. After attending West Texas State for one year, she enrolled in Texas Technological College in 1942, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in home economics in 1944. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Phi Upsilon Omicron, a professional home economics honorary fraternity. She was named one of the outstanding women students at Texas Tech. After working in the war effort at the Pantex Ordnance Plant, she accepted a position as home economist for Southwestern Public Service Co. In 1952, she received the Laura McCall Award as one of the nation's top 10 home economists. The award was presented at the Edison Electric Institute in Chicago. This award, the highest recognition in her profession, was given for achievement and advanced thinking in the field of electrical living. As a recipient of the award, she was featured in McCall's magazine. In 1953, she was promoted to Director of Home Economics for Southwestern Public Service Co. and remained in that position until her marriage to Bert Ballengee in 1956. She was a longtime member of Polk Street Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Bert; a son, Ben Brannen Ballengee of Austin; a daughter, Ann Claire Carlson of Dallas; and two grandchildren, Susanna Brannen Carlson and John Hayden Carlson, both of Dallas. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 17, 2001 Shirley Ann Armstrong Shirley Ann Armstrong, 66, of Amarillo, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in First United Methodist Church at Stratford with the Rev. John Wagoner officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mrs. Armstrong dedicated her adult life to volunteer work with children. She began her volunteer work in Stratford in 1975 and had continued in Amarillo where she was active in Child Protective Services. She was the secretary/treasurer for the Region One Child Welfare Board. She received the Volunteer of the Year award for Region One on Sept. 13, 2001, in Austin. She was preceded in death by her father, Vergil Plunk; and a sister, Virginia Lee "Johnnie" Plunk. Survivors include a daughter, Lea Ann Armstrong of Amarillo; a son, Michael Armstrong of Borger; her mother, Velma Plunk of Amarillo; two sisters, Marti Timmons of Amarillo and Linda McClellan of Lewisville; a brother, John Plunk of Dalhart; and three grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 17, 2001 Oklahoma Arvel Lee Perky BOISE CITY, Okla. - Arvel Lee Perky, 60, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Kenton Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Smith and the Rev. Gail Smith officiating. Burial will be in Kenton Cemetery at Kenton by Cimarron Mortuary. Mr. Perky married Joyce Blackwell on Aug. 19, 1961, at Joyce's parents home east of Dumas, Texas. They bought their home ranch at western Cimarron County in January of 1966 where they had since made their home. Survivors include his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Arlene Ellis of Dalhart, Texas, and Chesna Perky of Des Moines, N.M.; his mother, Bonita Perky of Dumas, Texas; and five grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Sept. 17, 2001 Thelma Morrison Nunn DUMAS - Thelma Morrison Nunn, 90, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2001. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church of Dumas with the Rev. Eddie Tubbs, pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in I.O.O.F. Cemetery at Clayton, N.M., by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mrs. Nunn was born Aug. 5, 1911, in Union County, N.M. She had been a resident of Moore County and Dumas since 1957. She was a former longtime Union County resident. She taught Sunday school for more than 40 years and was an original member of the Happy Hatters formed in 1986. She was a longtime volunteer at Meals on Wheels, the Moore County Museum and was an AARP volunteer tax preparer. She received the Joyce Dillow Heritage Award in 1998 and received the Moore County Volunteer of the Year Award in 1999. She married James A. Nunn on Oct. 30, 1934, in Clayton, N.M. She was preceded in death by her husband, James, in 1975. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ross and Yvonne Nunn of Scottsboro, Ala.; a brother, Russell H. Morrison of Clinton, Ark.; two sisters, Marguerite Haisten of Grenville, N.M., and Eulala Jones of Los Lunas, N.M.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family will be at 1417 S.
