Meek BRISCO - J.P. Meek, 85, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Gageby Cemetery with Aaron Laverty, pastor of Gageby Baptist Church, and Jerry Jewell of the Country Chapel in Wheeler officiating. Arrangements are by Wright Funeral Directors. Mr. Meek was born June 24, 1916, to Edward and Esther Phoebe Minor Meek in Forestburg. At 2 years of age he moved with his family by covered wagon to Wheeler County and at about 12 years old he moved to Hemphill County where he resided until death. He played football at West Texas State University and graduated in 1941. Pro teams wanted him to play for them but the Coast Guard took him and he served for four years. He married Martha Fort on Aug. 19, 1955, in Canyon. He was a farmer and rancher and was active in church and civic affairs. He will be missed dearly by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jay Phil Meek, in 1982; and five brothers, Clyde Meek, Carnes Meek, Clinton Meek, Jack Meek and Wayne Meek. Survivors include his wife; a son, Mack Sides and wife, Linda, of Shamrock; three daughters, Suzann Everett of Shamrock, Cindy Hartsfield and husband, Don, of Monterey, Tenn., and Phoebe Hartline and husband, Chuck, of Canadian; two sisters, Lois Meadows of Briscoe and Lola Cyphers of Odessa; a grandson, Shawn Everett and wife, Amy, of San Antonio; 11 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Christian Church of Canadian with the Rev. Les Hall, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery by Stickley-Hill Funeral Home. Mr. Lewis was born Dec. 17, 1923, in Pecan Gap, to Clem Clay and Oliff May Gee Lewis. He married Florence Marie Hulme on May 30, 1942, in Bell County. He moved to Canadian from Quanah in 1953. He owned and operated Quality Body Shop. He served as a city councilman for 17 years. He was selected as Canadian Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year in 1979 and received the Real Producer award for Quality Body in 1989. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Hustler's Sunday school class and served on numerous church committees. He was instrumental in establishing the duck ponds at Hemphill County Recreational Complex. He was an original member of the Canadian Golf Course. He was preceded in death by a brother, T.J. Lewis; a son, Robert Jones Lewis Jr. in 1970; and a grandson, Jacob Martin. She lived in Belen, N.M., and worked at the livestock auction there for five years. She owned and operated the IDEAL drapery shop in Belen from 1972 to 1976 before moving to Clovis, N.M. She lived in Clovis from 1976 to 1999, where she was a member of 21st Street Church of Christ. She owned and operated Mode O'Day women's clothing store in Belen and Clovis for a number of years. She moved to Amarillo in 1999 and was a member of San Jacinto Church of Christ for the past two years. After his discharge, he attended college at Indiana University where he graduated with a degree in business administration. He worked for Connally Implement Supply Co. for 35 years. He married the former Miss Marilyn Loofbourrow on June 5, 1954, in Boise City, Okla. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a grandson, Christopher Ryan Salge, on Sept. 28, 1982. She married Calvin Blankenship in 1948 at Hereford. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 20, 2001 Canyon Geraldine Heath Sims Geraldine Heath Sims, 83, formerly of Canyon, died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, in Ozark, Ark. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. James Craig Lawless, assistant pastor and administrator of Lakeside Baptist Church in Dallas and Mrs. Sims' nephew, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery in Canyon. Mrs. Sims was born Nov. 17, 1918, in San Angelo, to General B. and Beulah Taylor. They moved to Canyon in the 1920s. She graduated from West Texas State Teachers College in 1940 with a degree in elementary education. She taught school in Morse and Borger. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Canyon. In 1945, she contracted polio. She was hospitalized in Plainview and Dallas and spent two years in Franklin D. Roosevelt's Warm Springs, Ga. She returned home with a firm resolve that to be confined to a wheelchair was not to be considered a handicap. She and her family returned to Canyon in 1950. In 1962, she and her daughter, Suzanne, established the Little Red Schoolhouse Kindergarten. She was a lifelong mother and educator who sought to instill within her students a love of learning and a respect for all people. In 1969, she moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., with her daughter and her family. They recently retired to Ozark in August 2000. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Dorothy Heath Newcomb in 1985 and Cleo Heath Brian in 2001; and her parents. Survivors include a daughter, Suzanne Knox of Ozark; a son, John Sims of Montague; a sister, Helen H.
