Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Monte Kreis, of Wellington, and the Rev. Jerry Don Cheshire of the church officiating. Burial will be in Higgins Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors, Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mrs. Lorenz was born May 12, 1922, in Higgins to Ted and Edna Lorenz. She graduated from Higgins High School and worked as a cashier at First National Bank of Higgins for 52 years. She was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church where she served her whole life. She used her talents as an artist in watercolor and oils, gardening, and helping her friends and neighbors. She loved nature, travel, fishing and being with her family. Her sense of humor and love of fun made her a favorite of family and friends alike. Survivors include a sister, Gladys Bissantz of Amarillo; two nieces, Nancy Hunt of Phoenix and Julia Watts of Fort Worth; and three great nieces and a great nephew. The family suggests memorials be to Cal Farley's Boy Ranch, 600 W. 11th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101; or First United Methodist Church, Higgins, TX. The family will receive friends at the Viewing Chapel in Higgins today from 4 to 6 p.m. Amarillo Globe-News, June 21, 2001 Opal Othel Phelps CLAUDE - Opal Othel Phelps, 85, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Amarillo. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Fairview Assembly of God in Amarillo, 3706 E. 10th Ave., with the Rev. Cliff H. Houghton, pastor, and the Rev. Max Beggs of Amarillo, officiating. Burial will be in Claude Cemetery at Claude by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mrs. Phelps was born March 14, 1916, in Lamar, Okla. She was a resident of Phillips from 1942 until 1981, when she moved to Claude. She married Carl Burton "Buck" Phelps on Aug. 5, 1933, at Lamar. She was a homemaker and a member of the Fairview Assembly of God in Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her husband on August 26, 2000, and a son, Aubry Phelps in 1992. Survivors include three daughters, Chris Graves of Claude, Virginia Bagwell of Claude, and Kay Sam of Amarillo; one son, Ryland Lee Phelps of Amarillo; two sisters, Melba Earl of Hereford and Lola Cook of Burkburnett; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Casket bearers will be Jerry Graves, Richard Goswick, Gary Harclerod, Phil Mancuso, Rex Lee Mancuso, Ryland Lee Phelps Jr., and Mark Goswick. She married Tom Jones in Amarillo in 1948. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Goldie Fern McCarty and her father, Arnold F. Peninger. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette Peninger and a brother, Gerald Peninger. Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Joy Fisher of Amarillo, Janis Sherbet of Cedar Hill, and Lisa Swarny of Austin; four sons, Gary Jones of Austin, Jimmy Jones and Kerry Jones, both of Amarillo, and Kenny Jones of Garland; four sisters, Doris Summers of San Diego, Ruth Johnson of Amarillo, Jackie Vaughn of Kerrville, and Frankie Gilchrest of Carrollton; four brothers, Arnold Peninger Jr., and Larry Peninger, both of Carrollton and Gordon Peninger and Richard Peninger, both of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. McGregor was born in Clinton, Okla., and was reared in Thomas. She graduated with a degree in education from Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She had been a resident of Amarillo since 1954. She married Herbert McGregor on Nov. 20, 1955, in Amarillo. She received her master's degree from West Texas State University and was involved in education in Amarillo and Canyon for more than 36 years. She taught first and second grades for the Amarillo Independent School District for several years and worked with deaf students before joining the Canyon Independent School District. She taught at Gene Howe Elementary School for several years before becoming the curriculum director - for more than 12 years - for the CISD. She opened and served as the first principal of Arden Road Elementary School in 1987 and served as principal until her retirement in 1989. Survivors include her husband, Herb McGregor of Amarillo; a son, Danny McGregor of Amarillo; a daughter, Sherri McGregor of Corpus Christi; two sisters, Mary Riha of Amarillo and Nita Ann McDonald of Anadarko, Okla.; and two grandsons, Quinlin McGregor and Blaine McGregor of Amarillo. Mrs. Stafford was born in Hollis, Okla., and had lived in Amarillo for 53 years. She worked in a laundry, as a lens grinder for an optical company and was a homemaker. She married William Nathan Stafford on April 5, 1939, at Vincent, Okla. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Stafford, in 1996. Survivors include her husband; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Bill Williams of Amarillo, and Judy and Earl Snead of Hendersonville, Tenn.; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Stafford of Orange County, Calif.; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Bartel was born July 30, 1919, in Moyers, Okla. She was a member of Howardwick Baptist Church. She reared her family in Sunray, and later, they moved to Canadian and then to Howardwick community before moving to Amarillo in 1993. She is remembered by her family as being a constant in their lives. When her children were growing up, their home was always open to anyone needed lodging, clothing or a hot meal. On one occasion, she provided a white jacket to a young a man in Sunray so he could attend the Junior / Senior Banquet. She was a member of The Rebekahs, Home Extension Club of Donley County and the Friendship Club. She was a volunteer for many civic organizations. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Woodrow Pool and Allen Bartel and one son, Woodie Pool. Survivors include two daughters, Sylvia Pool Lowe and Susie Blevins of Amarillo; two sons, Lloyd Pool of Amarillo and Boyd Pool of Palestine; three sisters, Helen Graham of Antlers, Okla., Joyce Abel of Tacoma, Wash., and Betty Roberts of Modesto, Calif.; a very special granddaughter, Kim Mason of Canyon; a grandson, David Pool of Floresville; three granddaughters, Christy Pool and Faye Blevins of Amarillo and Kerrie Beth Lowery of Dalhart; and six great grandchildren.
