Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Llano East Cemetery. Those wishing to accompany the family may gather at 2 p.m. Monday at Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary of First Baptist Church of Amarillo with Dr. Howard Batson officiating. The family would be pleased to meet with friends immediately after the service in the Family Hall just outside the sanctuary. Mrs. Huff was a wife, mother, music lover, airplane pilot, teacher, Realtor, businesswoman and longtime Amarillo resident. She died of complications from ovarian cancer. Throughout her long bout with this disease, Ima Jean never failed to confront it head-on every day with a smile, steadfast courage, style and grace. Mrs. Huff was born Aug. 4, 1931, in Martha, Okla., to Velma Irene (Sansom) Collins and Rufus Brownlow Collins. She was born on the 11th birthday of her brother, R.B. Collins Jr. She attended public schools in Altus, Okla., graduating with the Altus High School Class of 1949. She attended Oklahoma College for Women at Chickasha, Okla., and the University of Oklahoma at Norman, Okla. Her education was interrupted by marriage, raising a family and putting her husband through college and law school. She and her family moved to Amarillo in 1961, and thereafter she attended the Musical Arts Conservatory, West Texas State University, Amarillo College and a number of aviation schools, including special schools on particular large aircraft taught by the Beech Aircraft Corp. She also attended a number of real estate schools. At the time of her death, she was a Realtor associated with Coldwell Banker First Equity Realtors. Her three greatest loves were teaching, music and aviation. For a number of years, she taught music - both piano and accordion - privately and at the Musical Arts Conservatory. When she and the children began accompanying her pilot husband on trips in a private plane, her husband urged her to take a few flying lessons, at least sufficient to get the family plane on the ground in the event anything happened to him. On her first lesson, she fell in love with flying. She quickly acquired her private pilot's license and immediately set out to obtain higher ratings. One after another, she acquired a commercial pilot license, instrument flight rating, multi-engine rating and primary and advanced ground instructor certificates. Forced at this point to choose between her two loves, teaching music and teaching flying, she chose the air. She obtained single- and multi-engine flight instructor ratings, an instrument instructor rating and finally the highest rating the Federal Aviation Agency offers, the Airline Transport Pilots license. At that time she was one of a relatively few women in the United States to have achieved that coveted rating. She was part owner, chief pilot and manager of Llano Aviation, a flight school, rental and charter operation. She was later manager of the flight department and chief pilot of Tradewind Airport flight department, also a flight school, rental and charter operation. She later opened the flight school, rental and charter operations for Chaparral Aviation. She attended a number of flight schools on particular aircraft given by Beech Aircraft Corporation, and flew the entire line of Beech aircraft, from the small "Skipper" trainer to the largest twin turbo-prop King Air. She was a designated examiner for FAA written exams and was designated by the FAA as an Aviation Safety Counselor. Sponsored by a number of Amarillo business concerns, including the Amarillo Globe-News, she and her co-pilot, Chris McClain, twice flew the Powder Puff Derby, the famous transcontinental air race for women pilots. She organized and was first president of the Top of Texas Chapter of the "99's," an early day organization of women pilots formed by, among others, Amelia Earhart. Born 40 years too soon to have been an airline captain or an astronaut in her own right, she did the next best thing and considered her proudest achievements to be the success of so many of her flight students. Her students included a large number of airline pilots as well as several very successful career Air Force pilots, the most notable being Air Force Lt. Col. Rick Husband, Amarillo's first astronaut, and a distinguished space shuttle pilot and Mission Commander. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Amarillo and was active in Amarillo community affairs for many years. She was chosen to attend the second of the Leadership Amarillo classes sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Thereafter, she served as chairman of Leadership Amarillo and as chairman of the Women's Division of the Chamber. She served for years on the Chamber's Aviation Committee and was a devoted volunteer in assisting with the highly successful air shows sponsored by the Transportation Division of the Chamber of Commerce in the early '80s. When the Chamber ceased sponsoring the air shows, she was asked by the chairman of the Transportation Committee to undertake the organization of an ad hoc group to continue the production of the annual air shows. In 1987, she assembled a group which organized the Texas Aviation Historical Society, which sponsored a number of Amarillo Air Shows throughout the '80s and early '90s and which founded Kritser Aviation and Space Museum, a forerunner of the present English Field Aviation Museum. She served as chairman of the board of directors and as president of the society until 1994, and as chairman of its Air Show Committee for several years. She married Jewett E. (Gene) Huff on Aug. 24, 1951. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary two months ago. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Kristin Anne Huff; her parents; and a brother, R.B. Collins Jr. Survivors include her husband; a son, Paul Edward Huff and wife, Tammy, of Sugar Land; three grandchildren, Jason Paul Huff of Tucson, Ariz., and Steven Micah Huff and Sara Lauren Huff both of Sugar Land; and a large extended family from Texas to California.
