Amarillo Sunday News-Globe April 22, 2001 Saundra Judith Meek PANHANDLE - Saundra Judith Meek, 58, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in First Baptist Church at Wheeler with the Rev. Aaron Laverty, pastor of Gageby Baptist Church at Gageby officiating. Burial will be at Gageby Cemetery at Gageby by Holley Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in J.A. Hill Chapel on the West Texas A&M University campus in Canyon. Saundra was born on July 23, 1942, in Wheeler. She attended public school in Briscoe and received her bachelor of science and master of counseling degrees from West Texas State University. Her work as an educator and mentor included teaching in public schools in Clayton, N.M., Briscoe, Highland Park in Amarillo and 14 years at West Texas State University, where she retired in 1983 as Dean of Student Affairs. She was an intensely private person, with a deep commitment and devotion to God. She was quiet in nature and very observant of her environment. She loved the simple country life and enjoyed driving on country roads, photographing windmills and old barns, watching sunsets and painting. She put great value in relationships - both family and friends - as shown by a special dedication to her mother, Evelyn, and a deep bond with her niece, Jocelyn, and nephew, Kaleb, and his wife, Marti. She also felt a special devotion to her brother, Mark, and his wife, Annette, and sister, Kathy. She had a great appreciation for her upbringing in the Panhandle and the rugged beauty of the plains: from mirages to the trees in her shelter belt. Saundra seized every opportunity to encourage every life she touched. She had great expectations of everyone, and her supreme objective was to see each individual achieve his or her full potential. She was a lover of people and mentor to countless students who passed through the doors of WT. Her genuine interest in each student was evidenced in her remarkable ability to remember a student's name, even after a chance meeting. Her legacy lives on through the lives shaped by her influence, integrity, character and leadership. She is in heaven with her Lord; her father, Jack; her brother, J. Michael; her beloved dog, Mickey; and many other family and friends. Survivors include her mother, Evelyn Meek of Canadian; a brother, Mark Meek of Briscoe; and a sister, Kathy Meek of Canyon. The family suggests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be to Saundra Meek Scholarship Fund, West Texas A&M University, WTAMU Box 60048, Canyon, TX 79016-0001.
