Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jack Lee, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Wheeler Cemetery at Wheeler by Wright Funeral Directors. Mrs. Newkirk was born Oct. 5, 1916, in Throckmorton. She came to Wheeler County as a small child. She graduated from Wheeler High School. She lived in Shamrock 47 years. She owned and operated the El Rancho and Wrangler restaurants and retired in 1977. Survivors include a son, Daulton Newkirk of San Antonio; three daughters, Gwen Hensley of Fort Smith, Ark., Cheryl Rucker of Amarillo and Vickie Poling of Grapevine; a sister, Norma D. Fulton of Dallas; two brothers, Chan Robertson and Doug Robertson, both of Shamrock; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Green was a lifetime area resident. She was the door greeter at Wal-Mart. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 25, 2001 Alva J. "Red" Trammell DUMAS - Alva J. "Red" Trammell, 74, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Northlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Roy Jackson, retired Baptist minister of Oklahoma City, officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Trammell was born April 12, 1927, in Sulphur, Okla. He was a maintenance worker for Colorado Interstate Gas for 16 years. He was a veteran of the Navy, serving during World War II. He had been a Dumas and Moore County resident since 1946. He worked at American Zinc for 25 years. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 9022 in Dumas. He was involved in the Baptist faith. Mr. Coonce was born Feb. 10, 1918, in Monroe, Okla., to James and Loula Langum Coonce. Mrs. Easley was born Jan. 25, 1943, in Bogalusa, La. She was a homemaker and lived in Shamrock for two years. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 25, 2001 Amarillo Albert "Sam" Samuels Albert "Sam" Samuels, 83, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Bates-Rolf Funeral Home Chapel in DeKalb with Roddy Jackson, pastor of Pinkham Missionary Baptist Church in DeKalb, officiating. Burial will be in Wheelock Cemetery in Millerton, Okla. Mr. Samuels was born Feb. 18, 1918, in Smithville, Okla. He married Gladys Adams in 1938. Later, He married Mossawese Evie Tyler on June 11, 1941. He was employed at the sawmill in Millerton in the 1940s. He was an assistant engineer at Wheelock Academy in Millerton. In 1952, his family moved to Dumas where he worked at American Zinc Plant for almost 20 years before its closing. Thereafter, he was employed by Dumas Independent School District in its maintenance department. He was preceded in death by a son, Wes Magel Samuels, in 1995. Survivors include four daughters, Janis Rose Basaldua, Donell Christine Ramos and Marsha Ruth Stagner, all of Amarillo, and Leila Ann Samuels of Hugo, Okla.; two sons, Eugene Ward Samuels of Grant, Okla., and Aaron Harris Samuels of Dumas; 16 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. After graduating high school, he joined the Army, served in Vietnam and retired in 1991 after 21 years of service. Mr. Hauser married Annie Gall on Feb. 6, 1953, in Hagerstown, Md. After serving 26 years, he retired as a MSGT administrator supervisor for the Air Force. Bell St. Mrs. Resech was born in Olney to Carl and Pearl Lowhorn Tucker. She moved to Canyon in 1976 and was a homemaker. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 25, 2001 Joe Wheeler Sutherland Joe Wheeler Sutherland, 89, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in First Baptist Church chapel with the Rev. Lynn Garrett of the church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Sutherland was born in Mangum, Okla., on Jan. 26, 1912. He was the second son of Joe Wheeler Sutherland Sr. and Ruth Harbour. He married Perlina Isabelle Towry on April 27, 1946, in Vernon. He served in the Army from Jan. 14, 1941 to Oct. 21, 1945. He served in Company A, 180th Infantry, 45th Division, in Company F, 112th Infantry, 28th Division and in Company A 263rd Infantry, 66th Division. He was involved in five major engagements; Sicily, July 1943; Normandy, July 1944; Northern France, July 1944; Ardennes, August 1944; and Rhineland, September 1944. He received two Purple Hearts, five Bronze Stars, four Oak Leaf Clusters and one Good Conduct Medal. Following the war, he worked as a cook in Kilgore, Tucumcari, N.M., and Amarillo. He was employed at Herring Hotel and Amarillo Air Force Base. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; two sisters, Agnes Naquin of Morgan City, La., and Lillie McCaleb of Vernon; a brother, Robert Sutherland of Fort Worth; two nephews; and a niece. The family suggests memorials be to Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice or Boy's Ranch. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 25, 2001 Ray Schultz Ray Schultz, 78, of Amarillo, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Polk Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marty Hamrick, associate pastor, officiating. Entombment will precede the service in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mr. Schultz, a native of Nebraska, was born Feb. 11, 1923. He graduated from high school in Clarks, Neb., and received bachelor's and master's degrees from West Texas State University. He married Charlotte Beth Henderson in 1945. She died in 1986. He married Bobby Willoughby in 1989. He served in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945. He began his teaching career in Canyon in 1948. He served as business administrator in Canyon, Dumas, Hurst-Euless-Bedford and was superintendent in White Deer and Olton during his 33-year career in education. He was active in Texas State Teachers Association, serving as district president in 1961. He held life memberships in Texas Association of School Business Officials, National Education Association, Texas Association of School Administrators and Texas State Teachers Association. While at Hurst-Euless-Bedford, First District Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers awarded him an honorary life membership in Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers, which is the highest honor a PTA can bestow. He was a member of Lions Clubs in Dumas, Amarillo, Olton and in White Deer where he served as president in 1963-64. He was a member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Wes Schultz of Amarillo and Joe Schultz of Weatherford; a daughter, Kay Mount of Reno, Nev.; a sister, Irene Schultz of Clarks, Neb.; two grandchildren, Matthew Schultz and Stephenie Schultz, both of Weatherford; a stepdaughter, Jane Dobervich of Tyler; a stepson, Larry Willoughby of Austin; and two stepgrandsons, Dustin Dobervich and Derek Dobervich, both of Tyler.
