She was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday school and was a member of the United Methodist Women and Church Women United. She was a former member and worthy matron in the Order of Eastern Star. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association. After retirement, she volunteered at local hospitals and for hospice. She mothered and lovingly cared for brothers, her sister, nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces or any others wherever needed. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jay and Addie Russell; and a brother, James Royce Russell. She worked for Levi Strauss and Co. as a seamstress and retired in 1985. She then worked with her husband in their family-owned business. She held many offices with the then Amarillo and Vega Jaycettes and was a past officer with the Panhandle Roadriders Association. She was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Ed Whitmore; and a daughter, Jo Karlyn. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Hays was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Veal Station in Parker County, the eighth of 10 children to Earnest and Dorettia Hays. Soon after Mr. Hays' birth, the Hays family settled in Lockney. He spent his youth helping on the farm with the crops and livestock and running and playing with his brothers and sisters. As a young man, he served his country in the Army in 1935 and again during World War II. He worked as a farmer, truck driver and aircraft mechanic throughout his life, living mostly in Plainview, Amarillo and Canyon. He most recently retired from Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, where he was on the security staff until he was 81 years old. He loved the history of the Panhandle and visiting with people there, many whom he knew or found something in common with. His favorite things in life were having his family near him, watching television, eating a good hamburger and feeding pretzels to his canine companion, Nikki. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Hays; four sisters, Lola Roberson, Jewel Wakefield, Ruby Gay Hart and Ray Ragle. Barbee, 86, formerly of Amarillo, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church of Amarillo with Dr. Chester O'Brien officiating. Private graveside services will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery by N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mr. Barbee was born in Jud and had been a resident of Amarillo since 1946. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He was a graduate of Howard Payne College in Brownwood and was inducted into the school's hall of fame. He married Helen Joyner in 1939 in Sur. He was a freight company manager in Amarillo for many years. He was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Amarillo where he had served as chairman of the board of deacons and as the superintendent of the adult Sunday school department. He moved to Florida from Amarillo in August. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Suellen Stephens of Phoenix; a son, Mark Barbee of Clearwater, Fla.; a sister, Iona Sellers of Bronte; two brothers, Beraline Barbee of Bronte and E.G. Barbee of Canton; two grandchildren, Stacia Warren of Amarillo and Devon Bass of Dallas. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 27, 2001 Hersel Lea Pepper WICHITA FALLS - Hersel Lea Pepper, 96, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001. Services were at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Owens and Brumley Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Steven Ray Pepper officiating. Burial was at 1 p.m. in Perrin Memorial Gardens in Perrin. Mrs. Pepper was born July 22, 1905, in Gibtown. She retired from the state of Texas in 1976. Survivors include four sons, Fred Pepper and Don Pepper, both of Wichita Falls, Joe Pepper of Amarillo and Mickey Pepper of Midland; a daughter, Jackie Dean of Wichita Falls; six grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 27, 2001 Lucille Bauer Hallerberg WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. - Lucille Bauer Hallerberg, 96, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Glendale Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Laurel Hill Cemetery by Bopp Chapel. Survivors include two sons, David W. Hallerberg of Minooka, Ill., and Dr. William L. Hallerberg of Amarillo, Texas; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Glendale Lutheran Church or KFUO radio station. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 27, 2001 Richard L. James DENTON - Richard L. James, 73, formerly of Amarillo, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Roselawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Mel Bessellieu officiating. Arrangements are by Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home. Mr. James was born Nov. 8, 1928, in Moline, Ill., to Wesley L. and Blanche M. Henderson James. He graduated from Moline High School. He was drafted in 1952 into basic training at Camp Breckenridge, Ky., with the 101st airborne, known as the Screaming Eagles, followed by training in counterintelligence corps at Fort Holabird in Baltimore. He completed his service as a CIC agent working out of the Louisville office in Madisonville, Ky. He married Donna C. Elpers in East Moline on May 29, 1954. He received his bachelor of arts in geology from Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill., in 1956, followed by graduate work at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Mo. In 1957, he moved to Amarillo and was employed by Petroleum Exploration Inc., now Mesa Petroleum. In 1960, he was employed by Prudential Insurance Co. and later by Sentry Insurance Co. until his retirement in 1993. He was a member of No. 731 Masonic Lodge and the drum and bugle corps of Khiva Shrine Temple in Amarillo. He was assistant Boy Scout leader for several years also having served as a coach councilor for Woodbadge and district commissioner of Llano Estacado Council. Survivors include his wife of Amarillo; three daughters, Linda Reynolds of Birmingham, Ala., Sarah Loewen of Mansfield and Lisa Williams of Denton; a son, Frank James of Denton; a sister, Betty Lou Doughty of Wilson N.C.; and eight grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 710 W. 168th St., New York, NY 10032-9982. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 27, 2001 Katherine Irene Small EMPORIA, Kan. - Katherine Irene Small, 49, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Bishop David Adams of the church officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Topeka by Roberts-Blue-Barnett Funeral Home. Mrs. Small was born May 31, 1952, in Hueneme, Calif., to J.E. and Bille Bennett Bumpus. She married Richard Allen Small on April 15, 1972, in Arlington. She worked in environmental services at Newman Regional Health in Emporia for two years. She moved to Emporia in 1999 from South Fork, Colo. She was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 22, 1998; and her father. Survivors include her mother of Clarendon, Texas; a son, Andrew Small of Chicago; a daughter, Magan Szwarek of Chicago; two brothers, Michael Bumpus of Joshua and Scott Bumpus of Clarendon. The family suggests memorials be to American Cancer Society or Kansas University Medical Center for Cancer Research and may be left at the funeral home.
