Miller PLAINVIEW - James M. Miller, 91, died Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, in Lubbock. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Christian Church with Jim Irwin of Idalou officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Memorial Park by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Miller was a longtime resident and respected pioneer in the field of aviation. He was born June 2, 1910, in Lockney and graduated from high school there. He started a garage there while still in high school and later became a Plymouth-Chrysler dealer. On March 16, 1931, he married Elvie Rosetta Cook in Frederick, Okla. In 1934, he began his flying career and bought his first airplane soon after. During the war he was a civilian instructor at Victory Field in Vernon, teaching primary students to fly. When the war ended he came back to Plainview and was the first operator of Hale County Airport. In 1946 he became a Bellanca dealer and was later president of the company after serving on the board of directors for many years. Dealerships for most general aviation airplanes would follow at various times through the years including Aeronca, Funk, Luscombe, Cessna, Aircoupe, Piper and Aerostar. But the one thing that always remained constant was his love for Bellancas and the worldwide following that developed. He was still working six days a week at Miller Flying Service until his recent surgery. He was past president of Bellanca Aircraft and a longtime member of Plainview Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Batson, of Portales, N.M. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Marlin Miller of Plainview and Wayne Miller of Houston; two daughters, Jan Cornebise of Greeley, Colo., and Kay Koepp of Lubbock; a daughter-in-law, Pat Miller of Houston; two sons-in-law, Dr. Al Cornebise of Greeley and Noble Koepp of Lubbock; a brother, Edgar Miller of Dallas; three sisters, Katheryne Tye of Kress, Frances Thompson of Fort Collins, Colo., and Mary Jeanne Moore of Lockney; 10 grandchildren, including Marla Hartman of Plainview; and 12 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Citizens Cemetery. Mr. Derr was born May 19, 1911, in Eldorado, Okla., and moved from Dallas to Clarendon 19 years ago. He was a self-employed mechanic most of his life before his retirement. He was active in Donley County Senior Citizens Association and was a member of First Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Letha Evelyn Venable Derr, in 1981; and his second wife, Allene Estlack Derr, in 1995. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 28, 2001 Myrle May Holt SPEARMAN - Myrle May Holt, 90, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Cole officiating. Burial will be in Holt Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home. Ms. Holt was born Feb. 11, 1911, at home in the Holt community of Hutchinson County. She earned a bachelor of science degree with a joint major in speech and English in 1930 from Texas Woman's University in Denton. She completed Spearman High School and college in six years. After teaching for a short time, she attended South Texas College of Law while working as a secretary and was licensed to practice law in Texas in 1941. She was the first woman attorney hired by Continental Oil Co., where she advanced to supervisor of contracts, traveling throughout the country looking after such diverse interests as land production, tax accounting, mineral leasing, insurance, natural gas products and crude oil trading. She married Charles Alexander Farrington on Feb. 9, 1952. After retirement, she and her architect husband left immediately for Guatemala in Central America where they reconstructed from the ground up a 300-year-old Spanish colonial house that had been leveled by an earthquake in 1773. From her home in Antigua, she was as busy as ever running her household and entertaining in the spacious 12-room house at No. 28 Alameda de Santa Rosa. She had several transischemic attacks unrecognized by her doctors in Guatemala and in transit to Houston on Oct. 20, 1982, while airborne, she had a massive stroke. Members of her family and her husband determined that she should remain in Texas to receive treatment at Bivins Rehabilitation Center in Amarillo. She moved to Hansford Manor in Spearman on Sept. 6, 1983. She enjoyed a private suite with her own furnishings; she considered this her home. Her husband remained in Guatemala and a divorce was decreed. She was preceded in death by her brothers, O.C. Holt and Benjamin Fredrick Holt; and a sister, Maudie Marie Holt Marshall. Survivors include two brothers, Dr. Joseph Newton Holt of Fort Worth and Nolan Holt of Spearman; a sister-in-law, Helen Holt of Spearman; six nieces; two nephews; and their families. Amarillo Globe-News, Dec. 28, 2001 Mabel Odell Schmalz CLARENDON - Mabel Odell Schmalz, 85, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, in Amarillo. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Fairview Cemetery in Pampa with the Rev. Jim Powell, pastor of Hobart Baptist Church in Pampa, officiating. Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors. Mrs. Schmalz was born June 12, 1916, in Albany, and was a former resident of Pampa. She lived in Irving for 45 years before moving to Amarillo two years ago. She was a registered nurse and worked as a private duty nurse in Highland General Hospital in Pampa and at Irving Community Hospital before her retirement. She was married to Peter Joseph Schmalz who preceded her in death on Feb. 24, 1987. She was a former member of Order of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Matron of Wichita Falls Chapter. She was a Baptist. Survivors include a brother, Charlie DeMoss and wife, Datha, of Clarendon; and several nieces and nephews. Masonic graveside rites will be by Rock Island Masonic Lodge No. 869. Mr. Green was born Jan. 26, 1910, in Gainesville, Ga., to Addie and Parilee Bryant Green. He moved to Hartley County with his mother and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Bryant, when he was 2 years old. He spent his childhood on their farm a mile north of Hartley. He graduated from Hartley High School in 1928, where he took an active part in athletics. He attended barber college and was a barber in Hartley and Dalhart for a number of years. During World War II he worked in Dalhart during the day and worked in Hartley at night. In 1950 he was elected Hartley County judge and served continuously for 28 years, retiring in 1978. For a number of years he was also ex officio county school superintendent. Judge Green was dedicated to all the duties of his office. His dedication carried over to civic and regional organizations. He served as secretary of Panhandle Regional Planning Commission and was a past master of Sam Dowlin Lodge No. 1316 in Channing and had always taken an active part in the Matador Reunion. Survivors include his wife, Lucille of Channing; two sons, Gary Green of Oviedo, Fla., and Roger Green of Vega; three daughters, Linda Frye and Luwana Kepler, both of Alamosa, Colo., and Andra Brewster of Channing; and a sister, Anna Lou Perkins of Boulder City, Nev. She worked for Levi Strauss and Co. as a seamstress and retired in 1985. She then worked with her husband in their family-owned business. She held many offices with the then Amarillo and Vega Jaycettes and was a past officer with Panhandle Roadriders Association. She was a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Ed Whitmore; and a daughter, Jo Karlyn. She had been a member of First Baptist Church and worked in the food service department at the church until her illness. She married Travis K. Bailey on Dec. 19, 1950, in Amarillo. Mrs. Munnerlyn was born in Amarillo on Oct. 12, 1926, and was a 1944 graduate of Amarillo High School. She loved playing golf at her beloved home in Hilltop Lakes and playing card games with her friends and family. She and her loving husband of 48 years, Ray Munnerlyn, loved to travel and they managed to visit all 50 states. Most of all, she loved spending time with her friends and family. She was a very special lady with a wonderful sense of humor and a loving heart. The family wishes to express their appreciation to all of the wonderful doctors and staff of St. Joseph's Hospital in Bryan. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, John and Mayme Cavin, of Amarillo; and three brothers, Guyle Cavin, Jim Cavin and Tommy Cavin. Survivors include two daughters, Beth Oates of Dallas and Shuri Geeslin of Austin; a son-in-law, Dave Oates of Dallas; five grandchildren, Erin Richnow, Shea Santos, Christy Mitchell, Jennifer Geeslin and Elizabeth Geeslin; four great-grandchildren, Jacob, Alexis, Nicholas and Abigail Santos; a sister, Immy Cousland of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother, John Albert Cavin of Houston; two sisters-in-law, Billie Jean Cavin and Caroline Munnerlyn; three brothers-in-law, John Cousland and Tom Munnerlyn of Austin and Bill Munnerlyn of Germany; and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Hays was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Veal Station in Parker County, the eighth of 10 children to Earnest and Dorettia Hays. Soon after Mr. Hays' birth, the Hays family settled in Lockney. He spent his youth helping on the farm with the crops and livestock and running and playing with his brothers and sisters. As a young man, he served his country in the Army in 1935 and again during World War II. He worked as a farmer, truck driver and aircraft mechanic throughout his life, living mostly in Plainview, Amarillo and Canyon. He most recently retired from Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, where he was on the security staff until he was 81 years old. He loved the history of the Panhandle and visiting with people there, many whom he knew or found something in common with. His favorite things in life were having his family near him, watching television, eating a good hamburger and feeding pretzels to his canine companion, Nikki. He was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Hays; four sisters, Lola Roberson, Jewel Wakefield, Ruby Gay Hart and Ray Ragle. Survivors include his wife, Betty; a son, Lonell Hays of New Braunfels; two daughters, Myrna George of Canyon Lake and Brenda Augustine of Canyon; two brothers, Harvey Hays of Plainview and Paul Hays of Kress; two sisters, Ada Richardson of Dalhart and Pauline Barrett of Kress; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
