Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St. Mr. Smith was born Jan. 12, 1900, at Harrison County, Iowa, the son of Orton and Clara Smith. He attended school in Harrison County and graduated from high school in Indianola, Iowa. He then attended Simpson College and Iowa State University in Ames. He served in the Army during World War I. He married Opal Spooner in 1922. He was executive officer and member of the board of directors of Newton Savings and Loan Association and Mid-Iowa Savings and Loan of Newton. He was a member of Congregational United Church of Christ in Newton and an associate member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Amarillo. He had been a member of American Legion since 1920, a member of Masonic Lodge and Rotary Club. He served as state president of Iowa Savings and Loan League. He had been a member of Amarillo Senior Citizens Association since 1982. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1981. Survivors include a son, Kenneth A. Smith of Amarillo; a daughter, Virginia Turner of Oakland, Calif.; six grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She married Lynn Kester on June 10, 1933, at Sudan. They moved to Amarillo from Hereford in 1986. She co-owned Kester's Jewelry in Hereford with her husband from 1935 to 1973. She was a member of Coulter Road Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999 and a grandson, Mickey Walls, in 1996. He worked for Texas Highway Department for 24 years before retiring March 31, 1979. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hillsboro. Following graduation from East Texas State University, he taught vocational training at Wichita Falls Independent School District and Amarillo College. He married Lorene Mouser in October 1933 in Vernon. They were married for 68 years. He was active in business in Vernon, Wichita Falls and Amarillo. He was president of Young's Trailer Sales Inc. in Amarillo. He was a member of Lions International, Oddfellows and the Methodist Church. An accomplished musician, Mr. Young played guitar, bass and banjo with several country and western swing bands over the years.
