She worked for Mobley Cleaners in Hedley for 30 years and later for Hedley Senior Citizens Center. Her love of life manifested itself in her garden and her kitchen where she excelled at both. She attended Hedley schools, Clarendon College from 1954 to 1956, and graduated from West Texas State University in 1978. She worked as director of returning students at WT from 1978 to 1984, served as administrator of WT Children's Center and as director of continuing education. She received the WT Distinguished Service Award for luncheon coordinator. She taught public school and private piano. She served on several state committees on continuing education. She was an elder in the Presbyterian church as well as organist and choir director in several Presbyterian churches. She was a former member of Amarillo Women's Network, AAUW, High Plains Women's Political Caucus and Texas Association of Women's Deans, Counselors and Administrators. She was a member of Amarillo Symphony Guild, Amarillo Little Theatre Guild and St. Luke Presbyterian Church. She moved to Brentwood in August. She was preceded in death by a son in 1957; and her husband, Pat, in 1993. He married Libby Allen in 1950 at Amarillo. They farmed cotton in Lubbock for more than 20 years before returning to Amarillo in 1972 to open Amarillo Feed Mill with his father-in-law, H.W. Allen. He owned and operated the company until 1996. He was a member of Texas Grain Association and Feed Association as well as past president of Panhandle Feed and Grain Association. He was a member of Texas Cattle Feeders Association and Paramount Terrace Christain Church. She retired in 1994. She volunteered at the VA Medical Center and Nursing Home for seven years. She was a member of Paramount Baptist Church for 16 years. She had been a resident of Austin for two years. Mr. Purves married Eula Belle Aytes Benton on Feb. 24, 1946, in Clayton. He ranched and farmed in Union County and was a school bus driver for more than 20 years. He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 23, 2001. Survivors include a stepson, Kenneth Benton of Parker, Colo.; two stepdaughters, Mildred Morgan of Bluffton, S.C., and Charlene Green of Beaufort, S.C.; a sister, Johnnie Ethel Smith of Huntsville, Ark.; seven stepgrandchildren; and 16 step great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be to Clayton Church of Christ, 821 Oak St., Clayton, N.M. 88415.
