Harris, 83, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Amarillo. Services will be at 11 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church of Kress with Dewayne Wolf, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Kress Cemetery by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Harris was born March 15, 1918, in Chico and graduated from Lockney High School in 1937. He married Frances Goodwin on March 3, 1940, in Lockney. He moved to Center Plains community where he farmed for 20 years. He owned and operated Kress Farmers Supply from 1955 to 1959. In 1960 he moved to Kress. He was the manager for Swisher County Farm Bureau Insurance Agency in Tulia until 1975. Then he started J.C. Harris Realtors and Insurance Agency and owned it until 1990. He was a Sunday school teacher, a steward and a member of First United Methodist Church in Kress. He was past president of Kress school board, Kress Booster Club and a member of Kress Lions Club. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 25, 2002 Jim Douglas Harrell Jim Douglas Harrell, 52, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, in Farmington, N.M. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church with Charles Meyer, pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, and the Rev. Jeff Raines of the church officiating. Arrangements are by Memorial Park Funeral Home, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mr. Harrell was born Oct. 9, 1949, in Borger, to Douglas and Mary Lou Harrell. He died in a plane crash in Farmington. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1968. He and his wife were married 33 years and have two sons. He was a lifelong resident of Amarillo and leaves behind countless numbers of friends, many who would claim him as their best friend. He had been a passionate motorcycle rider since his early teens and was a member of Amarillo Harley Owners Group. Nothing gave him more pleasure than taking his Harley on the road with his friends. He was the owner and general manager of Tower Service Co. in Canyon. As president of Amarillo Rifle and Pistol Club, he competed at the national level in benchrest target shooting. He was a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Amarillo. He lived a rich and full life, always searching for new things to experience. He enjoyed scuba diving, nature photography, hunting and fishing. He had a contagious laugh and a happy spirit. There was never a friend or stranger in need that he didn't lend a hand to. He was generous and kind-hearted, a most special man, who will be missed by so many. Survivors include his wife, Susan; two sons, James Douglas Harrell and Nathan Ray Harrell, both of Amarillo; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Arvis Stewart of Amarillo; his stepmother, Shirley Harrell; his younger siblings, Byron Harrell of New Orleans, and Bonnie Bennett and Mickie Phipps, both of Austin. He married Frankye Nell Wilson on Feb. 12, 1953, in Clarendon. He was a salesman for 25 years for Conley-Lott-Nichols in Odessa and was employed as a salesman for Yellow House Machinery in Amarillo. He was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict and was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors Chapel, 5400 S. Bell St., with the Rev. H.L. Stevens, pastor of Assembly of God Church in Dumas, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Pickett was born Aug. 4, 1903, in Bonham, the son of Willie Samuel and Hattie Eugene Stewart Pickett. His parents moved to Amarillo and his father was superintendent of parks for Potter County for several years. He came to Amarillo in 1927. He married Minnie Belle Dysart on July 5, 1923, in Frederick, Okla. He worked on Amarillo Helium Plant construction crew and was hired to work there after the plant was completed. In 1968 he received his 40-year service pin, the first ever awarded by the Department of the Interior. The pin was designed with an eagle instead of a buffalo which is the symbol for the department. He received a Meritorious Award, a silver medallion from the then Secretary of the Interior Udall. He became superintendent of Excell Helium Plant in 1950, and superintendent of Amarillo Helium Plant in 1963 until his retirement. He was a member of First Assembly of God Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years; his parents; a brother, Wade; and a sister, Ora Herrington. Survivors include three daughters, Alma Jeane Stark of Nixa, Mo., Billie Faye Ham of Amarillo and Claudene Marie Sublett and husband, John, of Grand Prairie; and three grandchildren, Billie Marie "Mykie" Hill and husband, Eddie, of Lubbock, Cynthia Ann Ham of Amarillo and Kenneth Harold Ham of Corpus Christi; seven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Graham was born Nov. 7, 1911, in Binghamton, N.Y., to Harry and Luella Yeomans Green. She married Charles Graham on June 27, 1940, in Mount Kisco, N.Y. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Canyon and Murray Bible Class. She was a member of numerous teacher organizations. She received her master's degree in physical education from Cortland Senior Normal College in 1934. She taught school in New York before moving to Canyon in 1942. She taught physical education, history, economics and government and was a girl's basketball coach in Canyon and Amarillo for 44 years. She and her husband owned and operated Graham Grocery Store on 24th Street and Fifth Avenue in Canyon for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1971; two brothers, Russell Green and Harold Green; and a daughter, Linda Graham. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 25, 2002 New Mexico Temperance E. Adams CLOVIS, N.M. - Temperance E. Adams, 94, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002, in Albuquerque. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Steed-Todd Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Thomas P. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Melrose Cemetery in Melrose. Mrs. Adams was born Feb. 7, 1907, in Crowell. She was a homemaker. Survivors include four sons, Don Adams of Bosque Farms, Jimmie Adams of Glendale, Ariz., Bert Adams of Albuquerque and Paul Adams of Melrose; a brother, Bill Dodd of Melrose; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, Jan. 25, 2002 Ethel D. Mullins FARMINGTON, N.M. - Ethel D. Mullins, 94, died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church in Canyon, Texas, with Kevin Deckard, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Dreamland Cemetery with Michale Daker, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by Alternative Society. Mrs. Mullins was born in Plainview, Texas, to Clint Adkins Workman and Mattie Pipkin Workman. She was the youngest of nine children born to the family. She completed high school in Plainview. While working for the chamber of commerce in Wichita Falls, Texas, she was recruited in 1943 to serve as an officer in the Army Air Corps during World War II. She was honorably discharged in 1945. Ethel, her mother and her daughter moved to Canyon, Texas, where she and her daughter enrolled at West Texas State Teachers College. She graduated with degrees in psychology and English. She held many important positions in her lifetime. While taking a civics course in college, she learned that once a county in Texas reaches a population of 8,000 there must be a district clerk. She waited for the last day of filing and submitted her intent. She and her grandson campaigned in a horse-drawn buggy and won the election as First District Clerk of the 47th Judicial District. From there she went on to serve as social director at Atascocita Country Club in Houston. After working there for several years she went on to hold the social and convention directors position for Conrad Hilton Hotel in Houston. She moved to Farmington in the 1960s to be near her daughter and grandson. She will be remembered in Farmington as an inspiring educator, where she taught English at Tibbetts Junior High. One of her most famous students is the world renowned artist, Curtis Walters. Her travels took her around the world to Canada, Australia, Mexico, Pago Pago, Bora Bora, Tahiti, New Zealand and Hawaii, though her heart always remained in the Republic of Texas. She was and always will be an inspiration to all those she encountered. She was a distinguished scholar and true patriot. Her strength and perseverance will always be remembered and admired. She was a loyal friend and pillar to her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Martha Louise Mullins Flaniken; her mother and father; her sisters, Hattie, Christine and Jesse Marie; her brothers, Robert, Edward, John, Joseph and Quince; and dear friend, B.F. Turner. Survivors include a grandson, Mike Flaniken; a granddaughter, Fontainne Waite; two great-granddaughters, Melany Flaniken and Micah Flaniken; and two great-grandsons, Kendall Waite and Brandon Waite.
