Bedwell SUNRAY - Gladys M. Bedwell, 96, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in Dumas. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Sunray Baptist Church with the Rev. M.G. Upton, Baptist minister of Orangevale, Calif., the Rev. Philip Hilton, pastor, and the Rev. Mike Martin, pastor of First Baptist Church in Morse, officiating. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Mike Martin officiating. Arrangements are by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mrs. Bedwell was born Aug. 30, 1905, in Fate. She was a homemaker and a musician. She was a Sunray resident since May 1951. She was a former Quitaque resident from 1928 to 1951. She was a church pianist in Quitaque and Sunray for 62 years. She taught children's Sunday school at Sunray Baptist Church for many years. She taught piano and organ to many young musicians and trained many to become church accompanists. She was instrumental in starting Sunray Band and was accompanist for band soloists for many years. She was chairman of the board of directors for Sun Bank for 19 years. She was a member of Sunray Baptist Church. She married C.E. Bedwell in June 11, 1931, in Cooper. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 18, 1983; four brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter. Survivors include two sons, John Lewis Bedwell and wife, Marilyn, of Norman, Okla., and Carroll Wayne Bedwell and wife, Mollie, of Sunray; four grandchildren, Susan Amos and husband, Michael, of Dumas, Catherine Bedwell of Grapevine, Leslie Bedwell of Norman and Laura Bedwell of Fort Worth; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley Kowalewski of Grapevine and Luke Amos and Will Amos, both of Dumas. In 1989 he was named president and chief executive officer of Continental Panhandle Lines. In 1995, he was named secretary-treasurer of Texas Bus Association. He was elected to the board of directors of the American Bus Association for 1997-1998. In 1999 he was re-elected for a three-year term as a member-at-large of the board of directors of Trailways Transportation Systems. He was active in United Way, was a member of Downtown Kiwanis Club, a past president of Amarillo Convention and Visitor Council and past chairman of the Tri-State Fair board of directors. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two daughters, Lauren and Andrea, both of Amarillo; his parents, Martha Allison of Borger and Thomas Allison of Amarillo; and a sister, Julie Allison of Amarillo. Mr. Hicks was born Dec. 28, 1917, to William Harvey Hicks and Jessie Myrtle Crank, a pioneer family of Canyon. He married Jo Solesbee in 1959. He was a member of San Jacinto Methodist Church. He was a highly decorated soldier having served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the 8th Air Force Bomb Group. He was a POW for 2 years in Germany. He received three Purple Hearts and a Distinguished Flying Cross. He was a charter member of Panhandle Chapter of POWs. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2000. Survivors include a son, Alan Higgins of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Marty Higgins of Amarillo; a brother, Glen Hicks of Dothan, Ala.; a sister, Agnes Boyer of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
