Osborn SUNRAY - John E. Osborn, 83, died Wednesday, March 6, 2002, in Dallas. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Sunray Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Canada, Baptist minister of Vernon, officiating. Burial will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery by Morrison Funeral Directors. Mr. Osborn was born Dec. 18, 1918, in Tell. He was a Moore County resident for 50 years. He was a member of Sunray Baptist Church. He married Bernice on Aug. 8, 1942, in Sayre, Okla. He graduated from West Texas State University in 1946 and received his master's in 1952. He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II at Perrin Field in Sherman. A longtime educator, he began his career at Wheeler from 1946 to 1948. They spent five years in Folsom, N.M., before moving to Moore County in 1951. He taught at Skelly before becoming principal and counselor at Sunray Independent School District from 1959 to 1981. After his retirement, he became representative for Teacher Retirement Association. The love of his students made his career one of joy and fulfillment. He was preceded in death by his wife; and his brothers and sisters, Miriam Carperton, Oma Byrnes, Alma Dutton, Ima Duncan, W.C. "Dub" Osborn and Georgia Coury. Survivors include two daughters, Jan Reed of Paducah and Starla Willis of Dallas; two sisters, Bessie Litrell of Dumas and Mary McBroom of Canyon; and five grandchildren, Joshua, Daniel, Michael, Katelin and Abby. Mrs. Sweat was born Oct. 24, 1910, in Olney, to Edwin M. Gulley and Olga Barksdale Gulley. She married Dick Sweat on June 2, 1934, in Wellington. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She was a former member of Piddlers Club, Hospital Auxiliary, JFF Club and Meals on Wheels Program. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1977; and 11 brothers and sisters. Survivors include two sons, Dick C. Osage St. Mrs. Cunningham was born in Montague County. She was raised in the Forestburg area. She married Joseph Albert Brogdon in 1925 at Montague County. They moved to Lelia Lake in 1942 and Amarillo in 1950. She was preceded in death by her husband; three children, Ima Jo Ferguson, Ray Brogdon and Merle Brogdon; and a grandson, Chuck Brogdon. He married Catherine Rodgers in Amarillo in 1956. He worked for Sante Fe Railway as a conductor for 41 years, retiring in 1976. He was an active member of Polk Street United Methodist Church and belonged to the McDavid Sunday School Class. He was a past master of Palo Duro Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, where he received many distinguished awards. He received the Golden Trowel Award for Exceptional Service from Grand Lodge of Texas. He was a longtime volunteer with Northwest Texas Hospital Auxiliary. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Loetta Southern in 1952; and a son, Thomas Southern in 1974. Survivors include his wife; a son, John Southern of Amarillo; a sister, Blanche Woody of Lovington, N.M.; and three grandchildren, Mark Southern of Santa Barbara, Calif., Stephen Southern of Lubbock and Berkley Collum of Mesquite. After retirement in 1986 from Kmart, he worked in maintenance at Sleepy Hollow Elementary School until 1994. He was a good and loving father and papa. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Larry Carpenter; and a great-great-grandson, Wyatt Nebgen. Survivors include his wife; a son, Sterling L. Mr. Chapman was born Aug. 30, 1931, in Soper, Okla., the second of four children born to Eli Ferd and Lila Culberson Chapman. He married Oveda Allen in April 1969. His early years were spent in Oklahoma until the family moved to Texas City in 1941. He graduated from Texas City High School in 1950 and attended Abilene Christian College. He honorably served in the Air Force during the Korean War. He worked as an aircraft electrician and retired from Collins/Rockwell, a Boeing subsidiary, in 1988. He has resided at Farris for a number of years prior to moving to Amarillo in 1998. He accepted Christ as a young man and worshiped at Central Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife in March 1999. Survivors include two sisters, Melba Jean Nessler and husband, Carl, of Texas City and Lou Hamby and husband, Norman, of Yuba, Okla.; a brother, Wayne Chapman and wife, Monika, of Amarillo; a stepson, Jimmy Don Allen and wife, Marietta, of Ferris; three grandchildren, Melinda Hope and husband, Mark, Melissa Wooley and husband, Matt, and Donna Ballantone and husband, Paul, all of Ferris; his especially loved great-granddaughter, Mariah Hope of Ferris; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends who loved him. He married Daisy Cooper in 1937 in Wheeler County. He had lived in Amarillo since 1941. He worked as production manager for Dr Pepper Bottling Co. in Amarillo for more than 30 years before retirement. After retirement he worked at the YMCA. He married Inez Smith in 1971. He was a Baptist and a member of the Thoroughbred Chapter of the Family Camper and RVers. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1962. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Jo Ann Shelton of Amarillo; a son, Donnie Frank Bullard of Sylmar, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Belle Melton and Doris Peninger, both of Amarillo; two sisters, Mary Hurst of Pampa and Lanell Waters of Happy; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Gariepy married Josie Gariepy in Clovis. He was a carpenter for James Manasco Construction Co., for 20 years. Amarillo Globe-News, March 8, 2002 Oklahoma Bernice Irene Lortz BARTLESVILLE, Okla. - Bernice Irene Lortz, 82, died Monday, March 4, 2002. Private graveside services will be Monday in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Borger, Texas. Arrangements are by Walker-Brown Funeral Home. Mrs. Lortz, a native of Kansas, was born on the family farm near Lafontaine, Kan., on March 6, 1919, to Samuel Edward and Daisy Bell Gilbert Chesnut. She attended Lafontaine schools graduating from high school in 1935 at age 16. She moved to Bartlesville and resided with relatives while attending Bartlesville College of Business. She then worked as a secretary for Foster Petroleum Co. and later for Phillips Petroleum Co. Feb. 28, 1941, in Bartlesville, she married Russell Lortz, a mechanical engineer with Phillips Petroleum Co. They made their homes in Bartlesville, Kansas City, Kan., Okmulgee, Sweeny, Texas, Antwerp, Belgium, and Borger, Texas. He was the plant manager of Phillips Refinery and NGL Center in Borger when he passed away. As a homemaker, she enjoyed sewing, bridge and golf. She was active in many church activities, clubs, charities and civic organizations. September of 1999 she moved to Bartlesville, making her home at Green Country Village Assisted Living and later to Heritage Villa. She was preceded in death by her husband in June 1977; her parents; four sisters; and three brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Klahn and husband, James, of Bartlesville; two grandchildren, Jessica and Christina; a great-grandchild, Damon; a brother, Robert Chesnut and wife, Josephine, of Bartlesville; a sister-in-law, Mildred Miller and husband, Leelyn, of North English, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
