Mrs. Anderson was born Feb. 1, 1915, in Deaf Smith County, the daughter of J.C. and Della Allred. She graduated from Hereford High School in 1933 and attended a year of college. She married Carlos Anderson on Feb. 23, 1941, in Hereford. She worked for Allred Oil Co. in its early years. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Hereford and taught Sunday school for the 2-year-old class for more than 40 years. She loved to work in her garden and over the years canned lots of food for her family and friends. She visited and took care of her friends in the hospital and loved to read Readers Digest. She was preceded in death by her husband on Dec. 7, 1993; two brothers, Jimmie Allred and Cecil Allred; three sisters, Sadie Henry, Maymie Allred and Ethel Mayo; and a daughter, Betty Ruth Anderson. Survivors include a son, Harold Anderson and wife, Ada, of Lone Tree, Colo.; a daughter, Camelia Jones and husband, Wayne, of Hereford; three grandchildren, Rodney Jones of San Diego, Calif., Stephanie McAlister of Santa Fe, N.M., and Holly Anderson of Dallas; four great-grandchildren, Brandon McAlister, Nathaniel McAlister and Brittany McAlister, all of Santa Fe, and Krista Jones of Amarillo. Amarillo Globe-News, March 22, 2002 Noted dance teacher, choreographer dies at 88 SEATTLE (AP) - Verla Flowers, a dance teacher and choreographer whose students included choreographer Mark Morris, a number of Rockettes and Las Vegas performers, died Saturday after a long illness. She was 88. Flowers taught ballet, jazz, tap, acrobatics, baton, belly dancing, Hawaiian, ballroom, Spanish and breakdancing before she closed her studio in 1990. Born in Seattle, she studied under a number of prominent teachers, including Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, and began giving dance lessons in her parents' home at age 14. Amarillo Oren L. Smith Oren L. Smith, 81, of Amarillo died Thursday, March 21, 2002. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Llano Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel. Arrangements are by N.S. He resided in Amarillo, Texas, for 19 years. He was a member of Certified Public Accountant Society of Texas and was employed with the Internal Revenue Service as a revenue agent. He was a charter member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, taught classes in the prison ministry, served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and street evangelizing. The most important of all his accomplishments was that he was a child of God, God fearing, God Praising and a God worshiping man and an ordained minister of the gospel. He was preceded in death by his father, Ben Holmes. "Sam" Thomas - Jesse W. "Sam" Thomas, 82, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Benny Hipps, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Tucumcari Memorial Cemetery with military honors. Arrangements are by Dunn Funeral Home. Mr. Thomas was born Nov. 6, 1919, in Hereford, Texas. He graduated from high school in Wildorado, Texas, before serving four years in the 910 Army Anti-Aircraft Artillery in the European Theater during World War II. He married Marie Brown on June 14, 1946. The couple made their home in Tucumcari, where he was a municipal judge, a volunteer firefighter, a hospice volunteer and owner of several service stations. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Tucumcari. The state of New Mexico appointed him as Guardian of the Treasury in 1996. Elks Lodge No. 1172 honored him as Veteran of the Year in 1992, Citizen of the Year in 1992-1993 and with the Distinguished Citizenship Award in 1993. He was preceded in death by four brothers; and two sisters. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Stephen Thomas and wife, Mae, and Ed Thomas, all of Albuquerque; three daughters, Cheryl Kessler and husband, Carl, of Albuquerque, Nancy Braziel of Denver and Debra Thomas and husband, Sam Ogan, of Dallas; 16 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Emma Liles of Logan, Susie Vineyard of Mesa, Ariz., and Naomi Jobe of Adrian, Texas; a brother, Ralph Thomas of Vega, Texas; and a host of other family and friends. Mr. White was born Jan. 5, 1925, in Chillicothe, Texas. He owned and operated A&W Drive In, Westerner Drive In and Country Hut restaurant. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; two daughters, Brenda Encinias of Tucumcari and Debbie Head of Rio Rancho; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister, Audrey Christian of Vernon, Texas; and a brother, Morgan J.
