Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Russell Memorial Methodist Church of Wills Point with the Rev. Wayne Rhodes and the Rev. Ken Calhoun officiating. Arrangements are by Herschel LyBrand Funeral Home of Wills Point. Mr. Monning was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Amarillo to Alleen (Jersig) and Benjamin Prater Monning. After graduating from Amarillo High School, he attended New Mexico Military Institute and the University of Texas where he received a bachelor of arts degree. He served as a captain in the Army Air Force during World War II. Following his service he returned to the University of Texas, school of law, and earned a bachelor of law degree in 1947. While attending the university he was president of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Following law school he married his wife of 54 years, Adele Wynne Monning, who survives him. He returned to Amarillo where he practiced law with his father under the name of Monning & Monning Lawyers until his father's death in 1969. He was president of the Amarillo Bar Association and the Coronado School Dads' Club, a founding member of Young Life of Amarillo, a member of the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church vestry and served on the boards of Big Brothers of Amarillo and Kids' Inc. While in Amarillo he was inducted into the International Society of Barristers. In 1970 he and his wife moved to Wills Point, where he continued practicing law with Wynne & Wynne. While in Wills Point he was president of the Van Zandt County Bar Association and the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce, as well as a director of the First National Bank and member of the Administrative Board of Russell Memorial Methodist Church. In 2001 the Wills Point Chamber of Commerce named him and his wife Outstanding Citizens of the Year, in recognition of myriad efforts supporting the community. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Bruce Monning and wife, Anne, and Prater Monning and wife, Nancy, all of Dallas, and Wynne Monning and wife, Becky, of Wills Point; a sister, Peggy Porteau and husband, Renee, of Mexico City, Mexico; eight grandchildren, Wright, Sarah, Shelby, Ben, Arthur, Buck, Will and John; a niece, Nancy Wynne Saustad of Dallas;; and a nephew, Howell Smith Wynne of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. Arrangements are by Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon. Mrs. Coberley was born Jan. 15, 1956, in Houston to William and Betty Jo Lohn Tedder. She grew up and attended public schools in Abilene and graduated from Cooper High School in 1974. She attended Hardin Simmons University, majoring in nursing and graduated from Mary Meek School of Nursing in 1978. She married Chancie Coberley in Clovis on Oct. 17, 1979. She received her bachelor of science in nursing from West Texas State University in 1988 and her master of science in nursing from WTSU in 1993. She completed her family nurse practitioner preceptorship in 1994 and was certified as a family nurse practitioner. She began her nursing career at Hendrick Medical Center ER in Abilene in 1978 before moving to Amarillo in 1978 and worked in the ER at the old Northwest Texas Hospital as an RN staff nurse and charge nurse. She was later head nurse of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at the new NWTH. In the early 1980s she worked part-time as a flight nurse for Life Watch and in the 1990s she worked part-time as a nursing instructor at Amarillo College. In 1990 she was employed by Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at the Clements Unit. She worked there as director of nursing and later as a nurse practitioner. In 1996 she went to work for the Muleshoe Area Medical Center as a nurse practitioner in the ER and was employed there until her illness prevented her from working in 2000. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association and Sigma Theta Tau, the international honor society of professional nursing. She was also co-organizer of the Hope Chest of Muleshoe, a charitable organization for the needy of Muleshoe and Bailey County. Her husband, Shelby Masterson Kritser, was the general manager of the Amarillo Globe-News and the founder of Tradewind Airport. She was a graduate of Amarillo High School and Finch College. She was a founding member of the Amarillo Art Center and a founder and advisory board member of the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society. She enjoyed world travel and fine art. She attended Temple University in Philadelphia where she completed certification as a classroom teacher. She taught primary, second and third grades in the Montgomery County Schools for 42 years. While in Pennsylvania she was an active volunteer beginning when she served as a civilian driver for the Navy during the years of World War II. She was a 34-year volunteer in the Norristown State Hospital, working with blind and long-term care patients. She was an 11-year member of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program and chaired the RSVP annual book sale for four years. She moved to Amarillo in 1985 to live with her nephew, Wallace L. Johnston, and his family. She continued volunteer work in her adopted city and gave more than 20,000 hours of service to the community. In 2000, Ms. Johnston received the J.C. Penny Golden Rule Award for her outstanding volunteer contributions. She was a strong financial supporter of many local groups and especially the AISD school libraries, Animal Rescue Center and RSVP. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chesley Metcalf Johnston and Mildred Beatrice Johnston of Philadelphia; and a brother, Daniel Lamont Johnston, who was lost at sea in World War II.
