Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in the Wallace Funeral Home Chapel of Tulia. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Church of the Holy Spirit with John Salazar-Jimenez, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Mr. Bernal was born March 10, 1941, in Artesia Wells. He married Eva Cardona in Asherton on April 13, 1959. He attended elementary schools in Artesia Wells and later moved to Del Rio where he attended high school. From 1959 to 1960 he worked at Best Fertilizer in Plainview. He owned Exxon Gas Station from 1960 to 1964 in Plainview. He managed the Plantation Liquor Store on the Swisher/Castro County line from 1964 to 1970. He owned and operated Ernie's Bar-B-Q in Tulia from 1970 to the time of his death. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Hilda Hernandez of Tulia; four sons, Ramiro Bernal and Bert Bernal, both of Tulia, Hector Bernal of Aurora, Ill., and Richard Bernal of Amarillo; his mother, Concepcion Bernal of Asherton; two brothers, Oscar Bernal and Alex Bernal, both of Asherton; six sisters, Delia Ruiz, Minerva Banda, Alicia Bernal, Gloria Herrera, Rosa Bustamenta and Elma Guiterrez, all of Asherton; six granddaughters; two grandsons; and two great-granddaughters. Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Dumas with Richard Scully, of the church, officiating. Burial will be in Northlawn Memorial Gardens of Dumas. Mrs. Acker was born Oct. 2, 1918, in Grand Rapids, Mich. She married Robert Acker on May 9, 1944, in Hollywood, Fla. She lived in Otis, Kan., for 16 years and was also a resident of Amarillo. She had lived in Dumas since 1968. She was a homemaker and was a member of the St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Dumas Senior Citizens, and DCWC Catholic Church. She was a secretary at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and enjoyed bowling. She was also a seamstress and an artist. She was preceded in death by a sister, Jackie Sella, in 1996; and a brother, Robert White, in 1994. Mrs. Root was born near Wisner, Neb., on May 9, 1908, and moved to Canyon in 1925 with her parents, John and Catharine Albers. She married Milton Eugene "Gene" Root in 1927. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Canyon where she was elected a Deacon Emeritus in 1997. She had sung many years in the choir, served in the Sunday school and held every other office in the Christian Women's Fellowship. She had also been a member of the Canyon Mother-in-Law Club. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff and volunteers at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospice. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968; a son, Clyde Root, in 1989; and a daughter, Nancy Boston Stewart, in 1999. Mr. Lax was born Feb. 13, 1920, in Granville, Okla., to Henry Raymond and Bertha Esther Mead Lax. An Army veteran of World War II, he served under General George "blood and guts" Patton. He participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy and he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the forces that engaged in the occupation of Germany. Not only did he serve as an infantryman, but also as a halftrack driver and mechanic. Upon being discharged from the Army in November 1945, he moved to Amarillo. On Dec. 22, 1946, he married Geneva Overton and they had resided in Amarillo since that time. Until being disabled, he was a welder at American Trailer and Equipment. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tommie Gay Lax, in 1968. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Shirley J. Clemishire, Kathy L. He was then discharged as a Tech Sargeant. He was in investments for the last 25 years. He was a Christian of First Baptist Church. He was a member of Caprock Band Boosters for 10 years. He had been a member of Comanche Trail Church of Christ since 1971. He is survived by many wonderful friends and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990. Amarillo Globe-News, March 25, 2002 Jeanne Howe Kritser Jeanne Howe Kritser, 84, of Amarillo died Saturday, March 23, 2002. Services will be at noon today in First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Clifton Mann, rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Kritser was born in Atchison, Kan., to Gene and Gale Donald Howe. She was the granddaughter of Ed Howe, a prominent newspaper publisher and author. Her father, Gene Howe, established the Amarillo Globe-News. Her husband, Shelby Masterson Kritser, was the general manager of the Amarillo Globe-News and the founder of Tradewind Airport. She was a graduate of Amarillo High School and Finch College. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Amarillo and Amarillo Botanical Gardens. She was a founding member of the Amarillo Art Center and a founder and advisory board member of the Amarillo-Panhandle Humane Society. She enjoyed world travel and fine art. She was preceded in death by her husband; and a grandson, Lee Masterson Kritser. She is the beloved mother of Sloan Howe Kritser of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gail Shelby Kritser Wagner of Denver; the grandmother of Phillip Sloan Kritser, Wendy Gail Kritser, Mark Shelby Kritser, Shelby Kritser Wagner and Kelly Katherine Wagner; and one great-grandchild.
