Wheeler PLAINVIEW - John Bennett "J.B." Wheeler, 84, died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, in Lubbock. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church with Dr. Max Browning officiating. Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery by Wood-Dunning Funeral Home. Mr. Wheeler was born Oct. 11, 1917, in Plainview. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1935 and attended George Peabody College. He joined the Army and served from 1942 to 1946. He was a platoon sergeant in Gen. George Patton's Third Army. On Sept. 3, 1947, he married Katherine Waller in Plainview Three days after completing four years of Army duty, he joined the staff of Hale County State Bank as a bookkeeper. On April 11, 1947, he was elected assistant cashier and subsequently through the years became chairman and chief executive officer. In 1988 he was named chairman emeritus. He was very active in banking circles throughout his career and held numerous offices, from president of South Plains Bankers Association to president of Texas Bankers Association and board member of American Bankers Association. He served as chairman of the Plainview Industrial Foundation fund-raising campaign in 1966 that resulted in the location in Plainview of an $8.5 million packing plant and various Celebrating Excellence campaigns for Wayland Baptist University in their development goals. He was involved in the Plainview Chamber of Commerce in which he received a lifetime membership, was named Man of the Year in 1970 and served as president and board member. He was president of Plainview Stock Show and was instrumental in the organization of the Plainview Rodeo Association. He was chairman of Texas Veterans Land Board for Hale County and chairman of the board of High Plains Research Foundation. He had been a member of Rotary Club since 1955 and was a board member of Salvation Army and Plainview Symphony Orchestra. He was chairman and founder of High Plains Education Authority. He had been an active member of First United Methodist Church nearly all of his life and was a longstanding member of Wesley Bible Class and gave much time to its cause. His lifelong motto attests to diligence, devotion and dedication to his endeavors throughout his life: "If I didn't live in Plainview, I'd move here." He was preceded in death by his wife on Jan. 8, 2001. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Katherine Mangum and husband, Rocky, of Plainview; two stepgrandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren. Mrs. Keel was born Jan. 21, 1938, in Gracemount, Okla., to Joe and Inez Griffith Turner. She was raised in Dalhart and graduated from Dalhart High School in 1956 where she was homecoming queen. She was a member of First Baptist Church and an avid bowler. She was preceded in death by her parents. He grew up around Logan and joined the armed forces during World War II. After retirement he returned to Amarillo and managed the House of Mirrors at 34th and Georgia. He was a resident of Amarillo for more than 40 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mr. Mock was born Oct. 15, 1924, in Childress County, near Kirkland, the youngest child of N.V. and Nellie Mock. He graduated from Williams High School in Hardeman County in 1943. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army Air Corps as a technical sergeant and B-25 crew chief in the Pacific Theater of operations. He was among the first Americans to enter Japan after the surrender. After the war, he farmed in Childress County until 1950, when he moved to Amarillo. He worked as a mechanic for American Pipe and Steel for more than 30 years. He later worked as a courier driver and security guard. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Claretta LaFever, Vaneta Daily and Jean Ferguson; and a brother, Thurman Mock. Survivors include a sister-in-law, Louise Mock; three nieces, Barbara Fauske, Sharlotte Parrish and Regina Richards; five nephews, Robert Daily, George Thurman Mock, Carroll Arthur Mock, Blynn Mock and Tracy Mock; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. Georgia St. Mr. Manning was born in Webb City, Mo., on Aug. 6, 1924. He married Aldine Bevers in Chicago on March 16, 1957, and they recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary. They moved to Amarillo from El Paso in 1979. He worked as a department manager for JC Penney. He was the VIP for Agape Home Health Care. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. He volunteered for RSVP, American Cancer Society, Meals on Wheels and was a member of Gideons International. She moved to Lubbock from Idalou in 1984. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband on June 26, 1979; her second husband on Jan. 18, 1999; a grandson, Glenn McQueary; and a great-great-grandson, Noah Goodnough. Survivors include two daughters, Jeane McQueary of Amarillo and Carolyn Tisdel of Ransom Canyon; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
