Burial will be in Claude Cemetery by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mrs. Butler was born Jan. 2, 1918, in Daylight, Tenn., and had been a resident of Armstrong County most of her life. She married Glenn Chester Butler on July 4, 1936. She was a homemaker and member of First Baptist Church where she formerly was a Sunday School teacher for several years. She was a member of the Busy Bees Homemakers Club and was a former recipient of their Homemaker of the Year award. Casket bearers will be David Butler, J.W. Butler, Wendell Sanders, Doug Cope, Nat McElroy and Gerald Wood. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Shana Butler, on Jan. 31, 1974. Amarillo Globe-News, April 21, 2002 Elsewhere James Marlon Higgins SPRINGFIELD, Colo. - James Marlon (Rusty) Higgins, 75, died Saturday, April 20, 2002. Services will be in Springfield United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the family plot by Rich Funeral Home. Mr. Higgins was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Wellington (Collinsworth County), Texas, to Solon and Ida (Moseley) Higgins. His family moved to Olton, Texas, in 1927 where he received most of his formal education. He then moved to Roy, N.M., to tend to the family ranch and graduated from high school. In 1946, his father bought a ranch in Dalhart, Texas, and he moved there to begin a long ranching and farming career. In 1949, he met and married Mary K. Lathem. They acquired their own ranch in 1951, and he put in some of the first irrigation wells in Dallam County. He was baptized and became a member of Central United Methodist Church of Dalhart in 1959. He served as an Amarillo Production Credit Association director from 1962 to 1970. He participated as director on the XIT Reunion Association from 1965 to 1967, and was in charge of the barbecue. He was a former XIT Ranger President, a member of and past Exalted Ruler of the BPOE No. 2390 and received the "Elk of the Year" award in 1969. In 1977 he and his son bought a ranch in Pinedale, Wyo. He divided his time between the Wyoming ranch and the Springfield ranch they bought in 1983. He and his wife resided together on the ranch in Springfield until the time of his death. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Marlene; a son, Ted Higgins; his parents; and two sisters, Nell Maria Redinger and Lynette Wilson. Amarillo Globe-News, April 21, 2002 Rose Denton CASTLE ROCK, Colo. - Rose Denton, 101, died Tuesday, April 16, 2002. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Peter's Episcopal Church of Amarillo. Arrangements are by Olinger Andrews Caldwell Gibson Funeral Home of Castle Rock. Mrs. Denton was a resident of Amarillo for 88 years. She was born in Kansas, and she and her family, the James V. Fords, came to Amarillo in a covered wagon and on a train. She was one of 10 children. She married Orville R. Denton and had a son, Lewis Karl Denton. Survivors include a son, L. Karl Denton of Sedalia; two grandsons, Lewis Karl Denton II of Englewood and Lance K. Denton of Memphis, Tenn.; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine Denton and Alexandra Denton. Amarillo Globe-News, April 21, 2002 Elsewhere Mary Stone Griffith CARMEL, Calif. - Mary Stone Griffith, 93, died Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, 2002, in the small chapel of First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are by The Paul Mortuary of Pacific Grove, Calif. Mrs. Griffith was born in Amarillo on May 2, 1908. Her parents, Benjamin Hicks Stone and Stella Agnes McCartney, moved to Amarillo from Fayetteville, Ark., to become pioneers in the new community. Mr. Stone was a prominent attorney and a partner in the firm of Stone & Guleke for many years. Thy had a small home on Tyler Street just off 16th close to downtown. One of her first memories was having the cowboys drive their cattle to market swarming around the house on all sides. She attended grade school and high school in Amarillo and started college at the University of Texas later transferring to North Texas State Teachers College in Denton. She married Lawrence "Griff" Griffith in Amarillo in 1930. Griff worked as a landman for Gulf Oil and, like many in that industry, he lost his job during the depression. With his wife's help, he managed to establish a successful independent oil and gas leasing and royalty business in the Panhandle. They maintained a home in Amarillo until Griff's death in 1978. She became a charter resident of Park Place Senior Center in Amarillo where she lived until 1999. She was pledged to Kappa Alpha Theta at Texas University and was an active alumna for many years. She was a charter member of the Amarillo Junior League and spent many hours volunteering in the tearoom they maintained in Amarillo. She and Griff were founding members of the Amarillo Club. She was a member of the DAR and First Presbyterian Church in Amarillo. She was also an avid bird watcher and member of the Audubon Society. Her children moved her to Carmel in 1999 to be closer to her daughter but she always considered Amarillo as her home. Whenever she encountered California traffic, she expressed how glad she was that she could still go home to Texas. Old friends who remember Mary are invited to come and share their memories with the members of the family who will attend the service in May. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Stone and Benjamin H. Stone Jr.; and two sisters, Ruth Hancock and Margaret Ann Dickson. Survivors include a daughter, Emily Griffith of Monterey; a son, Lawrence S. Griffith of Buena Vista, Colo.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Waite of Carmel; two grandsons, Lawrence Griffith of Highland Ranch, Colo., and Bob Griffith of Breckenridge, Colo.; and four great-granddaughters, Laura Griffith and Michelle Griffith, both of Highland Ranch, and Mary Kristina Waite and Marie Chantal Waite, both of Carmel. He worked at Conchas Dam, N.M., at the South Dock Concessions. He was a member and worked for Boilermakers Local No. 531 from which he retired. He and his brother and cousins raced at the Amarillo Speed Bowl in the Figure Eight for many years. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He and his wife, Della, were married July 13, 1956. He was preceded in death by his wife; his father, Paul D. McDonald, on Dec. 23, 1991; and a brother, Jerral D. McDonald, on June 14, 2001. He played the guitar and sang gospel music at various church organizations and nursing homes. He was a member of San Jacinto Full Gospel Church where he led and directed the music. He married Sandra Ann Haskins in 1994 at Amarillo. He was preceded in death by his father, Cecil George Roys, in 1975; and a brother, Sonny Roys, in 1992. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Billy Joe Roys of Lubbock, Johnny Roys of Amarillo, Eddie Roys of Quitaque and Mark Roys of Abernathy; five daughters, Dee Dee Payne of Quitaque, Prissy Clayton of Abernathy, Terri Robertson and Vickie Andreu, both of Amarillo, and Carla Balha of Mart; his mother, Maddlin Roys of Amarillo; five brothers, Rudolph Roys of Kingsland, Charley Roys of Dumas, Delbert Roys and Joe David Thomas, both of Amarillo, and Richard Roys of Lubbock; three sisters, Allene Townsend of Ozona, Betty Gonzales of Amarillo and Pearl Hill of Hawley; and 28 grandchildren.
