Amarillo Globe-News, May 8, 2002 This story printed from the Amarillo Globe-News Online at amarillonet.com: http://www.amarillonet.com/stories/050802/obi_ob050802-13.shtml Randel remembered for her drive, spirit Jo Stewart Randel's legacy has forever marked the Texas Panhandle, mourners at her funeral were told Tuesday. "She was a very real and very caring and very delightful and very human human being," said the Rev. John Wagoner, one of four officiants at Randel's funeral service. The 86-year-old Randel, founder of the Carson County Square House Museum and benefactor to numerous Amarillo-area arts groups, died Sunday. Family members and friends gathered Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Panhandle to celebrate the life of a woman known for her organizational skills, her drive and her spirit. A former journalist, Randel began interviewing Texas pioneer families as the editor of the Paducah Post in 1935. Later, after moving to Panhandle, she interviewed Carson County settlers and their descendants for a four-volume series entitled "A Time to Purpose." Many interviewees gave her relics of the area's earliest residents, Wagoner said. From those gifts, she and a group of friends built the Square House Museum in a pioneer home dating from the 1880s. Today, the museum houses 23,000 items; including 5,000 photographs. "Truly, it was a labor of love on Jo's part to do that work - and not only her part, but the group of volunteers she brought together," Wagoner said. Randel's love of history and the arts led to her significant involvement in the development of the musical drama "Texas." She also worked with Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum, Amarillo Symphony, Amarillo Opera and other organizations. Among her honors: the naming of the symphony's chamber orchestra after her and late husband Ralph E. Randel; her selection as 1985 Amarillo Globe-News Woman of the Year, the only non-Amarillo resident so honored; the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Golden Nail Summit Award in 1987; and an honorary doctorate of arts degree from West Texas A&M University in 2001. "Well, after all that," Wagoner said after reciting the lengthy list of Randel's accomplishments, "I'm tempted to say that there's not much left to do but sing the doxology, say the benediction and go to the cemetery. "Ah, but Jo would come back to haunt me," Wagoner said to the laughter of the congregation. Wagoner then spoke of Randel's strong Christian faith and her passion for education. "She never stopped learning. She never stopped loving to learn. She never stopped encouraging young people to get an education," Wagoner said. "... The legacy she leaves will live long after her."
