He married Daisy E. Cain in 1938. He later married Lucile Stone in 1977. He was a longtime engineer for Santa Fe Railroad, retiring after 35 years of service. He was a member of Coulter Road Baptist Church and was a member of Masonic Lodge for many years. He was preceded in death by his first wife in 1976; and his second wife in 1996. Survivors include a son, Thomas E. Stone of Lubbock; a daughter, Jacqueline L. Amarillo Globe-News, May 10, 2002 Ransford J. Johnston Ransford J. Johnston, 87, of Amarillo, died Wednesday, May 8, 2002. Graveside services will be at Sunset Memorial Park in Eureka, Calif. Local arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St. Mr. Johnston was born in Washington state and lived for a time in Alaska, where his father was a gold miner. Later the family moved to California. He resided there until he retired in Amarillo in the 1980s. He served in the Navy aboard the USS California and in the Merchant Marines during World War II. During his lifetime, he has had more than one successful career, first in Southern California as an electronic technician and carpenter, then in Eureka as a truck driver and volunteer fireman. The family moved to the San Francisco Bay area in the 1950s. There he went back to college and upon graduation, became an electronic engineer working for Dr. Shockley, founder of the modern transistor. It was there that he designed the first transistorized clock. Finally, he left his lucrative career in the bay area for another highly successful career as a real estate broker in Blue Lake Springs, a recreation community in the mountains above Sacramento. His company, Jon-Do Realty, sold mountain property and served as a cabin rental service. He designed and built mountain cabins and owned a delicatessen, managed by his wife. During this time, he was active in various community activities, as well as serving on the realty board and as a volunteer ambulance driver. He was generous and caring man who helped so many during his lifetime. He will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alpha and Perry Johnston; and his beloved wife of 47 years, Zelma Johnston. Survivors include his second wife and longtime family friend, Irmgard; three children, Randy Johnston of Tulsa, Okla., Doug Rischbieter of Arnold, Calif., and Barbara Bunner of Spring; seven grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and a brother, Hal W. Burial will be in Dozier Cemetery in Shamrock, Texas, by Greer Funeral Home. Mr. Poteet was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Shamrock. He attended school in Samnorwood, Texas, graduating in 1948. He attended West Texas State College in Canyon, Texas, on a basketball scholarship, graduating with a bachelor of science degree in 1953. He coached and taught at Memphis Independent School District, in Memphis, Texas, from 1953 to 1957; Panhandle ISD in Panhandle, Texas, from 1959 to 1961 and 1966 to 1969; and Mangum Schools from 1980 to 1995. He coached basketball, baseball and football and taught social studies. He played semi-pro baseball in the summers of 1954 to 1958. While in Panhandle he served on the board of directors of the local farm cooperative, was elected to the board of directors of the water conservation district, served on the board of directors for the Tri-State High School Rodeo Association and volunteered as an adult leader with the local, district, and state 4-H organization. He was a member of First Christian Church, serving as a deacon and as president of the church board. He was director of the Texas Tech bull testing program in Amarillo from 1972 to 1977. He farmed and ranched in Panhandle and Collbran, Colo., as well. His hobbies included flying, roping and other sports. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Frances Poteet; a brother, Doug Poteet; and a daughter, Cindy Poteet Smith. Survivors include his wife, Judy; three daughters, Sandy of Canadian, Texas, Susan of Panhandle and Sunni of Mangum; two sons, Larry of Panhandle and Captain Ryan Morgan of Clarksville, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Mrs. Howard was born June 11, 1941, in Oklahoma City. After graduating from Newkirk, Okla., High School, she attended Oklahoma College for Women earning a bachelor's degree in speech therapy. She moved to Amarillo where she taught at Amarillo Speech and Hearing Center. In 1976 she married Fred Howard and in 1977 they moved to New York City.
