Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Martin Road Chapel, 1505 Martin Road. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Laurence Cathedral with the Rev. Leobardo Heredia officiating. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Murguia was a mechanic for a number of years. He loved being with his family. Survivors include his father, Nestor Murguia of Amarillo; his mother, Lucia Murguia of Amarillo; four brothers, Antonio Murguia, Lepoldo Murguia, Reynaldo Murguia and Jesus Murguia, all of Amarillo; four sisters, Felipa Silva, Maria Castanon, Anita Nunez and Aurora Murguia, all of Amarillo; and his grandfather, Reymundo Murguia. Amarillo Globe-News, May 22, 2002 Bill Dee Bill Dee, 85, of Amarillo, died Sunday May 19, 2002. Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. today in St. Mary's Catholic Church with Monsignor Francis Smyer and Monsignor Joe Bixenman, both of the church, officiating. Entombment will be in Llano Cemetery by Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Mr. Dee was a lifelong resident of Amarillo. He graduated from Amarillo High School, attended the University of Texas and graduated from West Texas State University. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. He married Louise Johnson in 1977. He was a veteran of World War II, being discharged from the Army on Oct. 17, 1946, as a first lieutenant. He was active in real estate for many years, having owned and managed many real estate properties and apartment complexes. He continued to be active in the management of their investments until his death. He loved Amarillo and the Panhandle and talked freely of its history and of the families that helped it to be the city it is today. He and his wife were production sponsors of many productions of Amarillo Opera, charter member of the Impresario Society of the Amarillo Opera, and initiators of the Bill and Louise Dee Volunteer Awards for the opera. They were longtime supporters of Lone Star Ballet and many other Amarillo cultural and civic organizations. He was preceded in death by his father, Lee Roy Dee; his mother, Lillian M. Wessell Dee; and a brother, Fairmon Dee. Survivors include his wife, Louise of Amarillo. The family suggests memorials be to Amarillo Catholic Schools, the Bill Dee Scholarship Fund at Amarillo Opera or a favorite charity. Mrs. Monk was born Sept. 2, 1912, in Alto and moved to Lelia Lake in 1948. She moved to Clarendon in 1960, before moving to Amarillo in 1970. She was a retired nurse's aide and a member of South Georgia Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a son, Terry Wayne Monk in 1954; and a brother, Travis Rich in 1997. Survivors include three daughters, Ardath White and Brenda Hall, both of Amarillo, and Carolyn Bowman of Golden, Colo.; two sons, Bill Monk of Amarillo and Rayburn Monk of Wildomar, Calif.; a sister, Alta Pierce of Lufkin; 10 grandchildren, Jeanne Prescott, Wendy Ebmiaston, Tresha Gonzalez, Lisa Hall, Terry Hall, and Steven Monk, all of Amarillo, Rene' White of Louisiana, Risha Bradshaw of Colorado, and Kris Barnett and Paulette Pipes, both of California; and nine great-grandchildren. Amarillo Globe-News, May 22, 2002 Frances Eloise McConnell Frances Eloise McConnell, 83, of Amarillo died Monday, May 20, 2002. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa with Perry Hunsaker of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Amarillo officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, 5400 S. Bell St. Mrs. McConnell was born in Wichita Falls on Jan. 13, 1919. She married her high school sweetheart, Loyd Albert McConnell, on Sept. 28, 1937, in Wichita Falls. They were married 47 years. She was a generous person to her family and friends in times of trouble. She was a great cook who loved cooking for her family at gatherings. She played bridge for many years and was an avid "42" player. She embroidered, was an excellent seamstress, crocheted and made many afghans for her family and quilted blankets for new babies in the family. She and her husband traveled the 49 states and fished for trout and hunted jack rabbits in the 1950s. She was an excellent shot and a quail hunter. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1985. Survivors include a son, Loyd A. McConnell Jr. and wife, Janice, of Amarillo; a daughter, Carol Schmieding and husband, Allen, of Amarillo; eight grandchildren, Michael McLendon of Odessa, Valarie Phillips of Winnemucca, Nev., James McLendon and Janella Schmieding, both of Amarillo, Christine Brown of Houston, Cindy McConnell of Austin, Laci Case of Lubbock and Gretchen Schmieding of Ardmore, Okla.; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, R.L. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2820 Virginia Circle. Mrs. Stitt was born Oct. 23, 1920, in Alvord, to Edgar and Alma McCanne. She attended school in Alvord and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. She obtained a master's degree in education from West Texas State University, now West Texas A&M University. She moved to Amarillo in 1943. She was a homebound teacher for River Road School District and a testing and guidance counselor. A registered Texas Professional Educational Diagnostician, she was also a member of Amarillo Retired Teachers Association. Survivors include her daughter, RuNell Stitt Coons and husband, David, of Amarillo; two grandchildren, Courtnay Coons of Dallas and Kevin Coons of Amarillo; a sister, Pat Taylor of Granbury; and several nieces and nephews. Osage St. Mrs. Galaviz was born in Deming, N.M., and was raised in Chihuahua, Mexico. She moved to Amarillo in 1972 from Amherst. She was a member of Faithful Pentecostal Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Martin H. Galaviz, in 1990. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lou Geronimo and Grace Medina, both of Amarillo; five sons, Jesus Galaviz of Amherst, and Joe Galaviz, Johnny Galaviz, Carlos Galaviz and L.E. Galaviz, all of Amarillo; a sister, Maria DeRefugio of Juarez, Mexico; a brother, Marcelino Mendez of Chihuahua; 21 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Willis was born in Indian Territory, Okla. He married Opal Kerley in Wellington on Sept. 11, 1949. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in 1999. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He worked for Haliburton Oil and Cement for more than 20 years before retiring. He had been a 32nd Degree Mason and a Shriner. He volunteered with Senior Citizen's Association as a senior aide. He was involved with Meals on Wheels and was a member of Claude Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Terresa Collins and Brenda Whitney, both of Claude; a sister, Dessie Mae Scott of Wellington; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church with Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock Cemetery by Wright Funeral Directors. Mr. Payne was born July 25, 1959, in Pasadena, Texas, to Henry "Buddy" and Lucy Payne of Shamrock. He graduated from Shamrock High School in 1978. He was the operator of Payne Sand and Gravel. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and everyone that knew him, especially his father. He was preceded in death by his mother in 1995. Survivors include his father; three aunts, Jimmie Lois Hall of Grand Bay, Ala., Dale Alexander of Ocean Spring, Miss., and Bobbie Nell Reynolds of Baytown; two uncles, Lewis Strickland of Ellisville, Miss., and Albert Strickland of York, Ala.; and numerous cousins. Mr. Kersten was born Dec. 2, 1929, in Wellington to Emil Kersten and Erma Faye Childress Kersten. He married Joyce Neeley on Oct. 2, 1949, in Wellington. He graduated from Wellington in 1948. He was a member of First Christian Church. He was a retired welding shop owner. He was a lifetime resident of Wellington except during World War II, when he lived in Ashdown, Ark. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001; and a brother, Calvin Kersten in 1992. Survivors include three daughters, Rhonda Joy Rutkowski of Canyon, Pamela Odom of Dimmitt and Kathy Kersten of Panhandle; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
