Arrangements are by Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon. Mr. Hollingsworth was born Aug. 12, 1932, in Amarillo and graduated from Claude High School in 1950 and Texas Tech in 1954. He was a lifetime resident of Armstrong County. He married Jean Hudgins on July 19, 1954, in Amarillo. He had worked for USDA, S&S Manufacturing in Claude and as an instructor at Clarendon College. He retired in 1986 to farm full-time in Armstrong County. He had served in the Air Force, was a member of Texas Retired Teachers Association and a member of First Baptist Church in Panhandle. He was preceded in death by his father, W.L. Hollingsworth; and an aunt, Grace Wiegman. Survivors include his mother, Fern of Panhandle; his wife; two daughters, Katherine Brown and husband, Roger, of Weatherford, and Karla Jenkins and husband, J.R., of Whitman, Neb.; a son, Robert Dale Hollingsworth of Claude; eight grandchildren, Holli Brown, Kody Brown, Ross Hollingsworth, Ransom Hollingsworth, Jeanna Jenkins, Nathan Jenkins, Joshua Jenkins and Jacob Jenkins. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Mrs. Byars was born May 7, 1911, near Croswell, Mich. Her family moved from Michigan to Amarillo in 1928. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1930 and married J.R. Moore in 1931. She married Lloyd Byars in 1972. One of her joys in life was teaching Sunday school. She taught more than 70 years at Polk Street and Buchanan Street United Methodist churches. She taught Bible lessons on Saturday mornings for several years at Olsen Manor Nursing Home. She enjoyed reading and book reviews. She served as president of Polk Street United Methodist Women, Church Women United and Amarillo Federation of Women's Clubs. She was a member of Amarillo Chapter 787 Order of the Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Amarillo Chapter Beauceant and Amarillo Retired Teachers Association. She retired from Amarillo Independent School District after working as a school secretary at Will Rogers Elementary and Palo Duro High School. She was preceded in death by her first husband in 1968; her second husband in 1999; three sisters; two brothers; a grandson; and a great-grandson. Georgia St. Mrs. Cleland was born in Amarillo on Nov. 24, 1918. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1936. She attended Texas Tech University and graduated in 1940. She married Bruce Cleland in 1942. She worked for the VA hospital in Amarillo as an administrative assistant to the director for 30 years, retiring in 1980. Mrs. Hill was born in St. Catherine, Mo., on Sept. 6, 1926. She married Kenneth Hill in February 1945. They moved to Amarillo in 1968 to build and operate K-N Root Beer Drive-in. After a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 1979, she retired and focused her energies on family and friends, giving an abundance of love and happiness to all she knew. She enjoyed life dearly. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1994. Survivors include a son, Tom Hill and wife, Pat, of Fresno, Calif.; four daughters, Linda Turner and husband, Sam, of Bedford, Julie Baker and husband, Jim Bob, of Keller, and Sue Hill and Donna Barton, both of Amarillo; a brother, Roy Cagle of Marceline, Mo.; six grandchildren, Ryan Haygood of Dallas, Troy Baker and Tracey Baker, both of Keller, and Jacqueline Hill, Alyssa Hill and Alec Hill, all of Fresno; and many nieces and nephews. Georgia St. Mrs. Matney was born in 1909 at Denton, where she attended school. After graduating in 1930 with a bachelor's degree from Texas State College for Women, now Texas Woman's University, she taught high school English in Thornton and Plemons. In 1935, she married Roy M. Matney at Guymon, Okla. The couple moved from Plemons to Amarillo in 1940. She was a longtime member of Central Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1999; and a grandson, Roy M. Matney III in 1992. Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Seven of New York City; a son, Roy M. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79176. Amarillo Globe-News, May 24, 2002 Neil E. Carlton Neil E. Carlton, 88, of Amarillo died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, in Canyon. Services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors Memorial Chapel, Fifth Avenue and Pierce Street. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. Carlton was born July 17, 1913, in Dalhart, to William Edward "Ed" Carlton and Daisy Matthews Carlton. He was the sixth of seven children born to the family. They soon moved to Oklahoma where his dad bought a farm and began cattle ranching. In 1940 he joined the Oklahoma Army National Guard. Thus began a distinguished career of service to his family, his community and his country. As a member of 1st Battalion, HQ Company, 179th Infantry, he served two years stateside and three years in Europe during World War II. He was proud to be a veteran, but his service did not end there. In 1990 he began a distinguished career as a volunteer at Veterans Administration Medical Center. In April 2002, he was recognized for his more than 17,500 hours of devoted volunteer service to other military men and women who came to the Amarillo VA. He was fiercely proud of his country and his service in the Armed Forces. He moved to Amarillo in 1957. There he met and married his beloved, Gladys "Jewell." They were married on Nov. 10, 1959, and lived on East 10th Avenue in Amarillo for 30 years. It was here they shared their lives, a mutual passion for baseball and football, and he advocated for his political beliefs and campaigned for various candidates. He was a man who quite literally "walked his talk" participating in many walk-a-thons for American Diabetes Association and National Multiple Sclerosis Society. During these years, he worked for the City of Amarillo Water Department and Northwest Texas Medical Center. In 1982, he quit his job to care for his wife and continued his tradition of service. He was a devoted and adoring caregiver until her passing in 1989. He will be remembered by those who knew and loved him as a man who loved his wife, his family and his country. His ready smile and love for people and life will be missed. Survivors include J.D. and Kay Frakes of Happy, and their children, John and Sherri Frakes; Maxene and Frank Lovell of Grand Terrace, Calif., her children, Donell and Douglas Jansen and grandchildren, Sheila Johnson and Jennifer Kyle, Ray and Mardee Myers of Myrtle Creek, Ore., their children, Raylene Eilers, Douglas Myers, Dr. Dale R.
