Howard WHITE DEER - Opal A. Howard, 85, died Saturday, June 1, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in United Methodist Church in White Deer with the Rev. John Dorn, pastor of St. Andrew's Methodist Church in Borger, and the Rev. Toni Bailey, pastor of United Methodist Church in White Deer, officiating. Burial will be in White Deer Cemetery by Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors of Pampa. Mrs. Howard was born Jan. 22, 1917, in Thornberry and had been a resident of White Deer since 1931. She was a former member of the Art Club and White Deer Demonstration Club. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in White Deer where she taught children and adult Sunday school and was a charter member of the United Methodist Women and Daughters of the Pioneers. She served on the church board and was president of the Women's Ministry several times. She married Russ Howard on May 16, 1934, in White Deer. She was preceded in death by her husband in May 2000; three brothers, Alvin Williams, Clarence Williams and Horace Williams; and a sister, Velma Salvino. Survivors include two daughters, Lou McGee of Amarillo and Alma Phillips of Palo Alto, Calif.; three sons, Jerry Howard of Amarillo, Wayne Howard of Hatfield, Ark., and C.D. Howard of Panhandle; two brothers, Clifton Williams of White Deer and Oscar Williams of Hereford; three sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Williams and Roberta Williams, both of White Deer, and Jesslyn Williams of Amarillo; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Schooler Funeral Home, Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with the Rev. Marty Hamrick, of Polk Street United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Mrs. Davis was born in Canyon and graduated from West Texas High School. She married Wilbur W. Davis in Hereford on July 17, 1943, where she resided for 55 years before moving to Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; two sisters, Thelma Chapman and Velma Cupell, both of Amarillo; and a brother, Bennie J. Cupell of Amarillo. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Schooler-Gordon Funeral Directors, Bell Avenue Chapel, 5400 Bell St., with Joel Floyd officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery near Quitman. Mrs. Rountree was a member of Quail Creek Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. She had been struggling with ill health for 15 years and is now at rest and out of pain. Survivors include her husband, Randy; a daughter, Jennifer Cannon of Dallas; her mother, Mildred Long of Hamlin, Pa.; three brothers, Jimmy Long, Fred Long and David Long, all of Dallas; and a sister, Elizabeth Murdock of Long Beach, Calif. Amarillo Globe-News, June 3, 2002 Noema Blanche Meroney Noema Blanche Meroney, 90, of Amarillo died Sunday, June 2, 2002. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Panhandle Cemetery of Panhandle with Marvin Sparks and Bob Parker officiating. Arrangements are by Schooler Funeral Home, 4100 S. Georgia St. Mrs. Meroney married A.C. Meroney in Clovis, N.M., in 1931. He passed away in 1977. They moved to Panhandle and started farming in 1946. She was a member of First Christian Church in Panhandle. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Survivors include a son, Lloyd Meroney of Panhandle; and three grandchildren. Freeman, 78, of Amarillo died Saturday, June 1, 2002. Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in N.S. Griggs & Sons Funeral Directors, Pioneer Chapel, 2615 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Robert Field officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Freeman was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Chesterfield, England. She married Harold D. Freeman in 1946 at Bedford, England. They moved to Amarillo in 1947 from England. She owned and operated D.K. Freeman Gift and Costume for 27 years before retiring in 1996. She was an avid doll collector and was a judge for the annual doll show each year in Amarillo. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000. Survivors include a son, John Freeman of Amarillo; a sister, Jean Wood of Amarillo; a brother-in-law, James Wood of Amarillo; two nieces, Joyce Wood and Jan Moore, both of Amarillo; two nephews, Paul Wood of Dallas and Pete Wood of Kansas City, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. She was a homemaker and a gardener. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Bivens, in 1976; and four sisters, Helen Haddox, Agnes Layman, Edna McCoy and Maggie Rainwater. Survivors include her husband, Ed Stuart; a son, Jack Bivens of Amarillo; three daughters, Jeane Ellis of Mangum, Okla., Gayle Pannell of Lubbock and Sandy Tompkins of Amarillo; three brothers, LeRoy Younger of Artesia, N.M., Earl Younger of Irving and Bob Younger of Fayetteville, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She received her bachelor of science and master of science in nursing from West Texas A&M University and her nurse practitioner degree from Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Ind. She was a nurse practitioner at Ware Memorial Care Center. She was Methodist. She was a member of the Nursing National Honor Society and the Panhandle Nurse Practitioners Association. She was an avid fisherman and loved the mountains. She married Wayne Herbert Woodward on Jan. 2, 1985, in Amarillo. Survivors include her husband; a son, Travis Durham of Dallas; a daughter, Wendy Camp of Amarillo; her father and stepmother, Don and Mary Allen of Spearman; her mother and stepfather, Donna and S.B. Sheets of Spearman; a brother, Mark Allen of Spearman; two sisters, Sharon Lesly of San Antonio and Sue Felder of Amarillo; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Camp and Emily Camp, both of Amarillo. Mr. Castro was born Dec. 26, 1932, to Simon and Juanita (Garcia) Castro in Floresville. He came to Post in 1965 to work in the Postex Cotton Mill, United Supermarket and did yard maintenance. Survivors include seven sons, Johnny F. Castro Jr., Joe Castro, Albert Castro and Andy Castro, all of Lubbock, Eloy Castro of Midland, David Castro of Andrews and Ricardo Sanchez of Amarillo; two daughters, Virginia Castro of Slaton and Maria Espitia of Post; two brothers, Olie Castro and Albert Castro, both of Corpus Christi; three sisters, Tina Dunn and Mae Flores, both of Corpus Christi, and Mary Jane Dodier of Portland; 40 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Llano Cemetery. Mr. McDonald was born in San Antonio and had lived in McAllen for 12 years. He graduated from Amarillo High School. He was a communication specialist in fiber optics. He was a veteran of the Air Force serving in Vietnam. He was a Christian. Survivors include two sons, David Scott Nelson McDonald of Austin and Dusty W. McDonald of Canyon; a brother, Jan Murray McDonald of Amarillo; and three grandchildren, Shane, Alisa and Anna. Amarillo Globe-News, June 3, 2002 New Mexico Diana Rodriguez PORTALES, N.M. - Diana Rodriguez, 51, died Friday, May 31, 2002. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in St. Helen Catholic Church. Mass will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday in the church with Tobin Hitt as celebrant. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery by Wheeler Mortuary. Mrs. Rodriguez was born Nov. 1, 1950, in Portales to Emma and A.L. Baca. She was a lifelong resident of Portales. She was a medical nurse for many years. She grew up in Portales and graduated from Portales High School in 1968. In 1970, she graduated from nursing school in Roswell and worked at Roosevelt General Hospital until its closing. After the hospital closed she commuted to Amarillo where she worked at Baptist St. Anthony's Hospital for about a year and a half. She had not been able to work for some time due to her failing health. She was married to Arthur Rodriguez in Portales on March 10, 1979. She was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church and had also been active in the Eagles Lodge in Clovis. Honorary pallbearers include friends and family. She was preceded in death by a son, Brian Joel Baca; and her grandparents, Jose and Petrita Baca and Trinidad and Cornelia Salguero. Survivors include her husband; a son, Manuel Rodriguez of Amarillo; a daughter, Adriana Rodriguez of Portales; her parents; a brother, Albert Baca of Portales; and eight sisters, Bernadette Smedley, Teresa Gonzales, Susie Baca, Juanita Cara, Anathalia Baca, Petrita Baca, Sylvia Baca and Agapita Baca, all of Portales.
