Mr. Norton was a longtime Memphis resident before moving to White Deer. He moved to Denver about five years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 7, 1988; a son, Jon George Fraser; and a grandson, Jon Sidney Fraser. He retired as an accountant for Mobil Oil in 1982 and worked at Midway of State Fair of Texas, McFarland Auditorium and Dallas Boat Show. He attended First Assembly of God of Amarillo and Dallas. He was a member of Casa View Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Nellie Porter; and a daughter, DaNell Mitte. Amarillo Globe-News, July 11, 2002 Amarillo Dr. Ernestine Smith Dr. Ernestine Smith, 89, of Amarillo died Monday, July 8, 2002. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in First Baptist Church with Dr. Howard K. Batson, pastor, and Dr. Winfred Moore, pastor emeritus, officiating. Private family burial will be in Llano Cemetery by N.S. Griggs and Sons Funeral Directors, 2615 Paramount Blvd. Dr. Smith was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Amarillo to Henry Ernest and Anna Smith. She attended Amarillo schools and graduated from Amarillo High School in 1930. She attended Amarillo College and was a member of the second graduating class in 1932. In 1934, she received a bachelor's degree with honors from Southern Methodist University. A pioneer in medicine, she was one of six women students attending University of Texas Medical School at Galveston in the class of 1938. She and one other woman graduated with the class to receive the MD degree. She then served a residency at Parkland Hospital in Dallas from 1938-1941, then she returned to Amarillo, where she practiced medicine until her retirement in 1982. Her life was one of service during and following her more than 40 years of medical practice. She was one of the many Panhandle doctors who made house calls for decades. She delivered many babies in Amarillo had said she quit counting at 4,000. She then looked after them and their families - some of them as many as four generations. She served as president of Northwest Texas Hospital staff and as president of Potter-Randall County Medical Society. After retirement, she continued to serve the community as a supporter of many groups and projects. She was an active member of First Baptist Church and Sunday School. She received numerous honors and awards during her lifetime. She received the Texas Panhandle Award for Distinguished Service from West Texas State University in 1978. She was inducted into the Amarillo High School Sandie Hall of Fame in 1980. She was honored as Amarillo College's Distinguished Alumna for 2000 and in 2001, at the Speaking of Women's Health Symposium, was recognized as one of five Amarillo women honored for their roles in promoting health in the area. "The Oracle," Newsletter of Women's Forum, Amarillo Area, featured her in the Winter 2002 edition. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Herman Smith; and a niece, Linda Smith Langwell. Survivors include a brother, J. Georgia St. Mr. Coffman was born in Amarillo on July 23, 1932, to John and Ann Coffman. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1950 and attended Amarillo College. He married Lois Fullerton on Dec. 1, 1956, in La Junta, Colo. They lived in La Junta, Albuquerque, N.M., and Bountiful, Utah, before returning to Amarillo in 1964. He was employed by Diamond Shamrock and West Texas Gas. He retired in 1999. He was a member of Paramount Baptist Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 6969 E. Interstate 40. Mrs. Cates was born in Amarillo on June 25, 1930, to Noble R. and Peggy Fowlkes. She lived in Amarillo for 71 years. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1948. She married Roy E. Cates Jr. in 1951. She was active in PTA, Canyon Band Parents Group and Canyon Eagles Booster Club. She served as a recruiter, counselor and trainer for the Llano Estacado Council and served on the committee of Boy Scout Troop 86. Three of her sons earned the rank of Eagle Scout. She was a Life Scout and Star Scout. She served 25 years as a den leader and den leaders coach. She organized the first Cub Scout day camp, Camp Akela, and served as camp director for the first four years. She had Wood Badge training. She was awarded the Den Leader Award, Den Leader Coach Award and numerous Award of Merit plaques. She was the first woman in the Llano Estacado Council to receive the Silver Fawn for her outstanding dedication in scouting. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978. Survivors include five sons, Noble Cates of Stevensville, Md., Dr. Ron Cates of Athens, Jeff Cates of Amarillo, Ken Cates of Albuquerque, N.M., and Greg Cates of Fort Worth; a sister, Donna Heitmiller of West; and 13 grandchildren.
