Mr. Hood was born on Oct. 21, 1934, on the O X Ranch in Cottle County to the late Fletcher Tatum Hood and Madeline Sears Hood. He attended school in Estelline and graduated as salutatorian of Estelline High School. He attended West Texas State University for a semester. He graduated from the Department of Public Safety Academy in 1957. He married Marte Collins on June 24, 1961, in Dallas. He was a retired Highway Patrol sergeant, having served 37 years on the force. He was a member of the DPS Officers Association and served on the board of directors and the National Rifle Association. He was a member of the Memphis Lions Club. He was a member of the Southwest Cowboy Poets Association and wrote and performed poetry for various civic events. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Memphis, where he had taught Sunday school. He was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Dumas, where he had served as senior adult director and as a deacon. At 7:10 p.m. Sunday, he became more alive than he ever had been, as he entered the gates of heaven. Marte, his wife, was holding his hand as Kaye, his daughter; Shannon, his sister; and several people from the family church sang "Amazing Grace." He was preceded in death by a son, Michael David Hood, and a daughter, Cora Juanita Hood.
